Yeah...Malaysia doesn't really have any clout. Nothing much happened after the Korean jet was shot down.
Unfortunately malaysia do not have enough economic resources to punish Russia if the Russia really did thatYeah...Malaysia doesn't really have any clout. Nothing much happened after the Korean jet was shot down.
It is somewhat relevant... For people expecting shit to hit the fan, its not going to happen. Russians will pay compensation of sorts and all will be back to normal except for the families of the 295. RIP.
Has any airline faced such tragedy in such quick succession?
Anton Gerashenko, an adviser to Ukraine's Interior Minister, said on his Facebook page the plane was flying at an altitude of 10,000 meters (33,000 feet) when it was hit by a missile fired from a Buk launcher. A similar launcher was seen by Associated Press journalists near the eastern Ukrainian town of Snizhne earlier Thursday

Malaysian Airlines will probably go out of business now.
They also shot down an Iranian passenger planeThe US shot down a Libyan plane in the late 80s. Lockerbie was the retaliation iirc.
But shit did hit the fan in the case mentioned. It led to a horrific terrorist attack and years of political unrest between the two countries.

Why?

Do you have more info about that? Admittedly, I'm only looking at wikipedia but the single Libyan airliner listed as shot down was in the 70s and it was done by Israel.
If you're thinking of the Gulf of Sidra incident that appears to have involved fighter aircraft only. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gulf_of_Sidra_incident_(1981)
The bad publicity will kill them even though it isn't their fault. People won't want to fly with them out of superstition imo.
Pan Am went bankrupt partly because of the Lockerbie crash.
The unrest was already there. Why do you think US ships were in the Gulf at the time?
They do.Agree with that, doesn't Malaysian airlines also have a spotty safety record?
Sorry, I meant this one, it was an Iranian flight. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Iran_Air_Flight_655

Malaysia Airlines has one of Asia's best safety records
Does NATO membership come into this at all?
It is possible, after there other flight went missing they had a massive downturn in tickets sold, I dont know if they have recovered.Malaysian Airlines will probably go out of business now.
Probably not, since the plane is Malaysian. Will be interesting if it was a Boeing as the Yanks like to send their own in to the crash site.

The shoulder SA-18 will shot down an airplane at 35000 feetIt was at cruising altitude? That would require a sophisticated weapon to shot it down. This is disastrous.
I'm thinking of the Dutch citizens.
