Manchester United v Manchester City

Fellaini will more than likely operate as a box to box midfielder, but I can see him getting further forward than both Cleverley and Carrick, who will probably take up roles similar to the Arsenal game.

Not bad. Would have preferred Shinji ahead of Cleverley but 'beefing' up the midfield with a natural midfielder has clearly been on Moyes' mind.

Glad that we're going with a three man midfield (unless Fellaini is in at no.10 :nervous:). Shame that we don't actually have three good midfielders but that's a problem for another time. It'll be interesting to see how they shape up, how far forward Fellaini will be and whether Mata and Welbeck will be pushed out wide.

As for Kagawa not starting, is anyone really surprised? He looks set to be sold in the summer, unfortunately.

Either he goes or Moyes goes, I know who I'd prefer being shown out of the door.

Please don't be Cleverley on the right! I remember Fergie experimenting with that one a few times.

Cleverley over Giggs/Kagawa?

David Moyes always makes at least one decision per lineup that baffles me.

If he isn't on Yaya like a bad rash, I certainly wouldn't understand why we opted for three natural CMs.

Proper 3 man midfield rather than an attacker. Can see the sense in it though. None of our 2 man combinations are capable of handling Fernandinho and Toure.

I like the line-up. I have a funny feeling that Cleverly will play on the right. Mata stays behind Rooney and Fellaini in CM.

Clevs has played that role for Watford as well as Wigan. He was quite handy, considering he's mobile, has a descent cross on him and is hard working. His weaker positional sense in central midfield won't be liability if he plays wide right.

Yaya gave Fellaini the run around last time, I think we may see Carrick and Cleverley as deep defensive midfielders again, protecting the defence.

Hopefully it does turn out to be a 3 in midfield as the line-up suggests. We'll need it I reckon. I'm hoping for more of a 4-3-2-1 than a straight 4-3-3 though.

I would laugh if he went for this though:

De Gea

Rafael Ferdinand Jones Evra

Mata Carrick Fellaini Cleverley

Rooney
Welbeck

Pleased with that side. Three in midfield and Danny adding lots of energy makes me more confident.

Neither.

It's a 4-3-3/4-5-1 I'd imagine.
Nah. Clev will drift wide right to cover Mata when Mata goes walkies inside. When we're under attack though it'll be a firm midfield 3.

Nah, 1 will have instruction to get forward and support more than the others. My money's on Fellaini.

Dunno where people think Kagawa would fit into that team. He's not good enough defensively to warrant replacing any of the 3 midfielders, he's not as good as Mata and replacing Welbeck would leave us with no pace up top. Good selection I think.

Well, loads of us have been begging for a 3 man midfield all season, so let's see how it does. We'll need against City's two!

I figured Fletcher couldn't play 2 in a row but I think Moyes is right still go with a 3 man midfield. I thought Vidic only had a 1 game ban? Big test for Rio at this stage in his career. I'm surprised it's Mata over Valencia to be honest.

Conversely he could be playing Fellaini as a big lumpy no.10

Indeed. Pretty terrible if he pick the right players for a useful 4-3-3 and somehow stuffs them into a system that relies on us bombing long balls at Fellaini. Doubt that's it though, a proper three man midfield makes way more sense for this game.

It could easily be:
De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Jones Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Mata Fellaini Welbeck
Rooney
But I think / hope it will be:
De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Jones Evra
Cleverley Carrick Fellaini
Mata Rooney Welbeck

I still can't understand why Vidic has got a two-game ban for two yellow cards?

Has he accumulated ten bookings?

It could easily be:
De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Jones Evra
Carrick Cleverley
Mata Fellaini Welbeck
Rooney

Yep. Can easily see Fellaini playing high up the pitch.

Please, please be 3 in midfield.

De Gea
Rafael - Jones - Ferdinand - Evra
Carrick - Fellaini - Cleverley
Mata - Rooney - Welbeck

vs.

Dzeko
Nasri - Silva - Navas
Yaya Toure - Fernandinho
Clichy - Kompany - Demichelis - Zabaleta
Hart

I would laugh if he went for this though:

De Gea

Rafael Ferdinand Jones Evra

Mata Carrick Fellaini Cleverley

Rooney
Welbeck

This would be worse...

De Gea

Rafael Ferdinand Jones Evra

Mata Cleverley Carrick Welbeck

Fellaini
Rooney

It's nice to have three lads, two of which are local, to have come from the academy starting against City's billions.
