Manchester United v Portsmouth

I think it's daft dropping a player who is in great form, so I'd stick with Rooney.

I'll go for a 4-0 win.

Winning is essential... without loosing players with injuries... getting the team into form for the final hurdles...

Yes. Definitely. I'm glad someone finally said it.

Rooney must start. We have to play 442. Rooney has to be taken off after 60-65 minutes.

Spot on. I think at this time of year it's about really trying to win the game as quickly as you can. I remember Scholes a few years back (Think it was the summer of 2006) saying that we'd been struggling to kill teams off early on in the game, whereas when we've been successful we've been able to get 2, maybe even 3, goals up in around 20/30 minutes. We need to be doing that more often as the season approaches it's end, at home at least. Get a few goals up and then you can bring the big names off, not rest the big names and bring them on unnecessarily if things aren't going to plan and risk dropping points.

And as I've said, dropping Rooney when he's in this vein of form would be mental.

Roonatov is a partnership, which makes it 11.

I'm desperate for Rooney to score, hoping for him to keep up the good form for the Milan game.

This could be a great weekend with all of Chelsea, Arsenal and Liverpool having difficult games, and us... having a relatively easier one. Really looking forward to it, especially the London derby.

VDS
Neville, Brown, Evans, Fabio
Valencia, Fletcher, Carrick, Nani
Berbatov, Owen.

I have Fabio starting in place of Evra, Owen in place of Rooney and Neville for Rafael.

Evra has played too many games without a break and we can't afford him to be tired / hurt for Villa/Milan games. Same goes for Rooney.

Neville - he needs games and this would be an ideal game for him.

Scholes /Giggs will come into contention for Villa away.

Ando maybe taking Carrick's spot if he is not being kept away from the team.

Resting Rooney is out of the question. He's in red hot form. He must start!

He can be rested after he's scored his goal (or 2). But he can't be rested for Villa. He's not the sort of player who wants the break, and Fergie isn't the sort of manager to be over cautious with a player he knows likes to play every game.

Rooney MUST start!

I really really hope that we're gonna have some fine atmosphere with lots of g&g scarfs on the stands - after that, we don't play a single match on OT for a month...

With Chelsea failing to win and playing Arsenal next (which could throw another spanner in the works), it'd be great if we can win by a good few goals (at least three) so we'll be top if Chelsea draw.

Pretty sure we'll do that if we play like we have been recently. Looking forward to this.

Would be good to get Anderson back involved. Hope SAF has 'forgiven' him by now.

Agreed, reckon he will see some action at some point in the match, doubt he starts though.

Chelsea will draw again... 0-0... we shall capitalise...

Pompey can't keep on being unlucky.

They've gven decent sides a run for their money in recent weeks. I can see this being one of those games (like Derby and Sunderland in recent seasons) where the PL whipping boys up their game and cause us all sorts of problems. Got a bad feeling about this one for some reason.

i would like us to rest some players but we have picked up some form and with that in mind why change things

i fear he will rest players with wednesday in mind...though we managed the last day with no vidic, berba, valancia, giggs so perhaps all these willl start. i expect -

One never knows with Fergie, but given some excellent performances with Rooney up front on his own, why go 4-4-2? The obsession with 4-4-2 is astonishing. It's the pace we play at that dictates whether we have a good game or not. I'd go Scholes/Carrick/Fletcher or Giggs/Carrick/Fletcher until the end of the season.

And I'd have though Nani on the left is not a good option, as his form has coincided with playing on the right.

I don't see the point in resting key players for this game. There has been no midweek game this week and there is no weekend game next week, so there's plenty time for players to get a rest. We should wait until the game is in the bag and then bring players off.

I really can't see it happening Pogue. We are really looking like we're in good nick now. And with the added incentive of the Chavs losing points midweek, I think the lads will want to get the job done on Saturday.

Incidentally, Pompey are 25/1 to win

A good, solid confident performance hopefully. Pompey are a better side than the table suggests. I think they will hold out for a bit!

There is no way I would be dropping Rooney for this game, get the game won and get him off around the 60 minute mark.

Rooney lone striker works well enough when the team we are facing is going to attack us as much as we are them. It leave enough space in the back for Rooney to run around and create havoc.

A lower half team coming to OT is not going to attack us, certainly not Pompey. It's going to be crowded at the back and those long balls that Rooney has been so able to get onto will be made more difficult. Not going to be able to put a ball over into a channel for Rooney to run onto pulling a central defender, there is going to be a full back tucked back .

The game isn't going to be setup for us to play counter-attacking football and with pace. It's going to be break down 10 men behind the ball - for that we will need to go with 2 strikers.

I always find whenever this happens and we have the chance to make up ground we bottle it!

Certainly has been somewhat true this season but, also the time we took back the title that is rightfully ours from , we did a good job of winning the game we had to win to get a ahead or stay ahead of Chelsea and keep the pressure on them (though I remember losing 2-0 to Pompey that year in April at Fratton Park).

But, our season seems to finally getting underway, the winning streaks we've threatened to go on are finally taken up roots and have to believe the time is finally here for us to go on like a 10-12 game win streak.

We are in great form and should take 3 points this weekend but you can never be sure. I still don't have the confidence in the team to say we can do a 10-12 game run because that is a very big ask.

Pompey are now a gargantuan 33/1 to beat United at OT...

That is surely a record.

I've never seen a Prem team at such long odds.
