I disagree on that. Jones can cover CB, RB and CM while Ashley Young can play on both flanks and forward line. That does help the squad in depth. What is nailing us are 3 things. Injuries (we have too many of them) and SAF's obsession in overrating value signings (we lost more then 13m in shite players like Bebe, Tosic and Diouf) and not bringing in a good quality CM.
Can't blame the young lads, Fergie didn't have a single senior player on the bench, it was suicide. Valencia worked as hard as humanly possible but Park got worse as the game went on and Pogba looked every bit the reserve player. Smalling was class, Evans should have stopped their second, but in the end it all comes down to the crazy bench selection.
Devilish, do you argue for the sake of it.
Isn't that my exact point?
he most likely expected the starters to do the job before bringing in the youngsters as subs. didn't work on both counts unfortunately.SAF should have had at least a few senior players on the bench, somebody who could come on and change the match in our favour, a match winner.
Park was rubbish but that doesn't excuse Valencia. I can't remember Antonio having a single '7' rated performance for us this season. Until the dying moments of injury time he seemed to forget he has the ability to take on full backs at speed, did virtually nothing but come inside and slow down our attacks.
The bench was fine. No senior players? Well sometimes you just gotta trust the youngsters to do the job their being talked up for don't you and the one or two experienced players in the mix to carry them through. That didn't happen tonight. Nobody except Smalling (who's hardly a veteran) actually played very well. The kids by and large were ok, the more tried players were dire. All and all a bad night for MUFC.

Maybe I've misunderstood you but I thought you said that this summer's signings do not help much our strength in depth. If I did misunderstood you, pls accept my sincere apologies.

The two young lads everybody wanted to see was Morrison and Pogba, that was it. Put them on the bench, that's fine. But to fill out the whole bench with young lads (except the GK) was shocking. I'd have had Chicharito on the bench.
Before tonight Palace had failed to score for 4 games in a row. I can see why Sir Alex thought a team that started with our top scorer from last season, our most effective wide player from last seasons run in and his big game hunter would be alright. Actually when we brought the kids on in the second half of normal time the team improved. It was 'experience' that was letting us down. Why have Chico on the bench? We know what he's capable of this was a chance for the likes of Macheda to prove themselves and they didn't take it.
Well Fabio should have been carded for the frst foul on Zaha ditto Gibson for the trip (both marginally outside the box otherwise they're stone pens). So , 2nd match in a row the officials had a serious hand in.
Credit to Palace for that performance though.

There are better ways I can think of spending £50. It would have been nice to see a team picked to win the game.Does anyone really give a shit?

How about opting out of the competition in the first place?

I thought Evans and Smalling played well but the rest were pretty poor.
Amos needs to learn that there are other ways of distributing the ball other than launching it out of his hands. I remember it happening in a previous game and it rarely works and costs us possession. He doesn't even throw it out. There were countless times when someone was free to pass it to and he just hoofs it. I don't see the point in playing our 3rd choice keeper. Rotate between De Gea and Lindegaard and either leave Amos in the reserves or sell him with Kuszczak.
I thought Gibson did alright as he tried to transfer possession from the defence to the other midfielders but he's never going to be a valued member of the squad so I don't see the point in playing him purely for the shop window. As for Diouf, he's never going to make it. He's not a winger either, so why bother?
Valencia was probably the most disappointing as we know what he can do. Perhaps he needs to be in a team playing well to do well himself because he did nothing special tonight once his run to the touchline and cross tactic was found out.
