Rooney probably picked up a knock. He's our best big game player and Sir Alex would never drop him after the second half he had on the weekend.

Still confident, the team out there is good enough, but it's a strange decision if he's not injured, which I assume he is.

Edit - Doesn't appear he is.

The only thing I can think why Rooney would be dropped is Welbeck's work-rate and ability to get in behind.

Rooney is on the bench.

subs lindegard, evans valencia, kagawa, rooney, hernande

Called Giggsy starting at the start of the QPR game shunts. :p

Giggs is on to slow the pace in midfield, Rooney will replace him if we need a goal.

Giggs will undeniably succeed at that.

(it's like people can't remember the last 12 months of Ryan Giggs, just the last 3 or 4 games)

MAkes no sense if he's on the bench and is fit. Not for Giggs ffs. Cant even use the experience card to explain this one. Rooney is very very experienced.

Really strange decision, if I was a Madrid fan I'd be delighted

United subs: Lindegaard, Rooney, Evans, Valencia, Young, Kagawa, Hernandez #MUFC.

Fortune is lost for words on MUTV. As am I.

So we can play 4231 in Madrid but need a midfield 3 in Manchester?

Guess SAF is playing for the clean sheet. Still, Giggs is a real shocker.

Really bizarre decision. If he's fit then he should be playing. He works harder than anyone else in the team which is exactly what United will need tonight while he also has immense attacking talent to trouble Madrid at the other end should you need it.

Rooney has just come back from a short layoff and played 90 minutes a few days ago. A storm in a teacup this. He'll come on in the second half. He'll be disappointed because he always wants to play, but he'll understand the managers reckoning. Nothing to see here.

It's not like it's the final.

As journo just pointed out: Left out Becks in 2003, left out RVN in 2006 Carling Cup final, leaves out Rooney in 2013...

Kagawa and Rooney on the bench? :(

If I was a Real Madrid fan I would be delighted with that.

To be fair, if we go purely on the basis of the game in Madrid, Rooney was a bit shit.

No midfielders on the bench worries me.

Giggs for Rooney and that would've been my XI

Shades of Beckham 2003 definitely though...
