Manchester United vs. Stoke City

----------------De Gea-----------------

Rafael------Ferdinand-----Evans-----Buttner

-----------Carrick------Cleverley-----------
Nani-------------Rooney------------Kagawa
----------------Van Persie-------------------

I'd like to see something like this, maybe Scholes in there for Clevs since he has had a couple weeks off and Cleverley been on International duty.

I can't watch the game because my son has a game at the same time. It's very serious with 7 year olds in Denver, USA, so I can't miss it. Will have to record it :(
Hoping for a good performance. If we keep the ball well, Stoke will pose no problems for us. However, if we start hoofing it up like in some of the worse performances this season, we will have no luck. Early goal would be nice. But then, when is it not nice?

Oh, and LOL at OP!

I can see a few players out on international duty not starting like Cleverley.

It seems to me that SAF tends to rest players after an international break if they played both games for their country.

Cleverley, Carrick, Rooney, Nani and Fletcher played two games during the break, so there's a fair chance for each to be rested.

Fergie was quite a joker during press conference but he propably won't underestimate Stoke and their stubborn tactics.

I would love to see an early punch from United, especially in this clash. Goal in the first half may open the door to pretty neat football match.

Clean, attacking football must win, God damnit !

I fear that we'll see the ever-dynamic due of both Giggs and Scholes play. Which, if recent history is anything to go on, means it'll be painful viewing.

I agree that Fergie will rest a lot of returning internationals, especially those on England duty who played a day later. Exception being Carrick, as we don't really have an option there with his height.

Likely:

-------------De Gea-------------
--Rafa----Rio------Evans--Evra--
---------Scholes-Carrick---------
--------------Ando--------------
----Young----------------Giggs--
--------------RVP---------------

----------------De Gea-----------------

Rafael------Ferdinand-----Evans-----Buttner

-----------Carrick------Cleverley-----------
Nani-------------Rooney------------Kagawa
----------------Van Persie-------------------

Valencia for kagawa (swapped sides with nani) and clev for Anderson and I agree. Think ando might get a runout as he will match physicality-wise with stoke.

Hernandez might get a runout aswell as he seems to have a good record v stoke (?)

It will certainly be interesting to see how SAF rotates the team for the next 6 games, it's a tricky run.

Oct 20 Manchester United v Stoke City
Oct 23 Manchester United v Braga
Oct 28 Chelsea v Manchester United
Oct 31 Chelsea v Manchester United LC
Nov 3 Manchester United v Arsenal
Nov 7 Braga v Manchester United

Stoke at home is probably the least difficult of those 6 games, so SAF may rest anyone who plays two games over the break. Van Persie or Kagawa may be rested so they can give their best against Braga and Chelsea in the league. But there's no reason to rest Scholes or Rio.

Most likely, Chelsea in the LC and possibly some changes against Stoke and Braga. Even though SAF mentioned he will start all strong teams in CL group stage, I still expect some tinkering. The man loves to take a gamble.

I hope we carry on with the diamond today.

De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Evans Evra
Fletcher
Cleverley Anderson
Rooney
Welbeck Van Persie

was thinking along the same lines but he won't rest Rooney and probably not Carrick (but could give Fletch a run out after an hour if we need somebody to do pointing duties)

Thought he'd revert to wingers but on the other hand, with their 8ft defenders, crosses will be pretty ineffective. Young might make a show....it gets harder every week predicting the line-up

Can't see fletcher playing 3 in a row. Given the break I'd expect scholes and ando to be heavily in fergies thoughts, though think it would be a mistake to include giggs as well. Carrick barring injury will surely play. Not sure what will happen with Rooney, playing on a really wet pitch on third probably wasn't great for him so fergie might want to be cautious, similarly with clev. I'm hoping nani is in as i think we'll need some flair to get through a well organised stoke team.

Oh did Fletcher play both games for Scotland?

I thought so, could be wrong though. Either way tbh I'd be highly surprised if he started, stoke are a very tough side and he's still easing his way in.

You are not. He started both games and wasn't substituted in either.

Ahh, well scrap that then. Was only thinking it'd be a good opportunity to give Carrick a break given the fixtures we've got coming up and Stoke at home is usually a banker.

We had many players in action less than 3 days ago - my guess is Cleverley and Rooney at least - wont start today. Possibly even Carrick....and would this perhaps be a game where Ferguson would rest Evra ? Might be.

SO even if I don't think so - I would not be shocked if we saw this team today:

de Gea, Buttner, Ferdinand, Evans, Rafael - Scholes, Anderson - Young, van Persie, Nani and Welbeck

I have a funny feeling that we might see Scholes and Ando start in the middle today.

Too hard to predict the line-up after an international break. :wenger:

Our last 11 goals in the PL have come from 11 different players. Evans Evra Clevs - Kagawa Nani - Rafael RvP - Scholes Chicha Buttner Powell

Good stat that.

Sir Alex keeps Stoke guessing

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he is likely to shift between playing with wingers and adopting a diamond formation.

Operating without wide men allows Wayne Rooney to drop deeper with fellow strikers Robin van Persie and Danny Welbeck also selected in the same line-up for United's 3-0 success at Newcastle last time out.

As the manager is keen to stress his squad's strength is in attack, it means he can play more of his out-and-out forwards but Ashley Young's return to fitness means he, Nani and Antonio Valencia also offer outstanding options on the flanks.

Stoke City boss Tony Pulis will be kept guessing as to the Reds' tactical intentions for Saturday's clash at Old Trafford.

"It is going to be difficult picking teams," confessed Sir Alex. "Sometimes I think the diamond formation can work. Other times, we need width.

"I am flexible. There are benefits both ways. It is unusual for us to play without wingers. Both Newcastle games and in Cluj it definitely worked very well. It gave our opponents a lot of problems. Obviously teams will work it out now.

"Tony Pulis will be wondering what I am going to do, whether I am going to play with wide players or a diamond. I might play wide players and a diamond and play with two defenders!"

Stoke will pose problems of their own with their awkward style and direct tactics, but Sir Alex is confident his team can handle the threat.

"Play your own game," he asserted. "You can over-worry about these things. We know they are going to get set-pieces. We know they are going to put a long throw into our box. We know they are going to play long balls up to Peter Crouch.

"Our preparation is simple. We know what they are going to do. Sometimes you can play teams and not know exactly what they are going to do. With Stoke we know exactly what they are going to do. Let's play our game. Hopefully it works."

First time in a long time all the top clubs play on the same day?

Want to see Kagawa start because I think he's really going to kick on now, but then I also worry that Stoke will look to bully him out of the game.

I've a gut feeling Rooney's finally going to score, and with jumpstart his "scoring season".
He's been in great form, all he needs now are goals, and it's been too long already :)

3-1
(Rooney, RvP and Kagawa to score)

Get the feeling Kagawa won't play from the start today - Stoke may be too physical for him and I think Fergie may think that too. On the other hand, it would be a good test/experience for him to face the bruitality of Stoke.

Scratch that, put Hernandez there instead of Kagawa :D Forgot he loves scoring against Stoke so much. And also, good point.

Not the most enjoyable fixture... Stoke will do their best to suck the joy out of it.

still I'm never bored when United play, even if the actual game is boring or United sucks, I'm never bored because I just care too much. Different story with any other team though obviously.

^^ Aye I'd be delighted with that 11. Wouldn't have Rooney as deep as you have there though.

Our overall score aainst them at home in the PL is 13-1 in just 4 games

Away from home your post would be correct.

They normally go down easy for us at OT
