Neymar Jr | PSG | 2017/2018 performances

A clown of a player..
Thinks he's already up there with the very best but has still so much to prove. Can't see him becoming the next 'big thing'.

He was poor but was constantly taking responsibility and tried again and again. He is likely to hit form in the next games and lead Brazil together with Coutinho to the final. Unless they play Germany. Germany didn't look great vs Mexico but are stil a great team.

It's doesn't matter how good the German team is, they always get there or there abouts. It's kind of unreal.

He never seems to be the man of the moment, does he?

Proper entertaining player, but you can't count on him to decide the game. Feel he has stagnated since 2015 and Coutinho is Brazil's best player by a large margin this WC.

That was Neymar's second official game after 3 months out injured. Maybe that explains his form.

It is as if people never watched him play before. He was always a diva, drama queen and to some degree diver. He also gets fouled quite often without the protection of the referee. Nothing new, hope we see him full guns blazing in the knockout stages after regaining some amtch sharpness

He did have some preparation and 2 friendlies under his belt before the WC. I'm not talking about physical issue, but more of a mental one and not really a decisive player he used to be in 2015 but more of a luxury one at this point.

He's good, but still clearly suffering from that long injury layoff. Pity this WC came right after him missing the whole second half of the season - to see him on form after a full year of tearing it up in France would have been a lot more fun than watching Brazil eke through games.

I used to criticise Ronaldinho for being self-indulgent and slowing down play too often, when he was so clearly capable of quick one-touch passing. Neymar at this world cup is taking it to another level. Dribbling backwards for no reason, standing still with the ball simply to posture - does he actually think anything is accomplished with this?

I felt he was quite disciplined when it came to recycling the ball at barcelona, so he is obviously capable of it. He plays like a kid in the schoolyard who doesn't take any tactical direction.

He may be the world's third most talented player, but until he cuts out his incessant diving and play-acting, he won't be fit to lace Ronaldo's or Messi's boots.

Trying to hog the spotlight by crying after the game in an affected show of patriotism would be justified if he and not Coutinho had carried the team in 2 games. Atleast when Ronaldo acts like a diva, it is because he has actually achieved something.

He’s exceptionally talented yet everything I hate about the modern footballer.

Still the most punchable face in football, and considering Wilshere is on the planet...

Can see why those hate Neymar. I did not like him at first ,began to warm to him and now hate him again. He's a hard person to like.

no chance. Pepe has by far the most punchable face. The fact he's an absolute piece of filth when it comes to dirty tackles but goes down shot when a fly touches him make him my most hated player for the last 20 years. 2nd most punchable is Mata as the guy is just too good looking

Neymar is going to prove a lot of people wrong in this thread by the end of the WC.

He will always be a cnut and unlikeable character, he won't change people's opinion on his persona.

Neymar is certainly a cnut.

However, I think back to the way he took responsibility during the last world cup despite really just being a kid, as well as leading that fightback against PSG......

He's a cnut with character. I could see him winning me back before the end of the tournament.

He’s basically what people try to portray Ronaldo to be.

Ridiculous argumentation!

He was the driving force behind Barcelona's comeback vs PSG in 2017.

Some of the posts in this thread lately are ridiculous.

He has faults but let's not forget he's barely back to playing competitive football. Friendlies don't count, he will improve game after game granted they go far.

His personality shouldn't make us lose any sense of objectivity when it comes to the player.

Perhaps I’m basing it from what I’ve seen for him in 2015 and him on the road of being the best player in the world.

To me he has stalled and it’s not just based on his WC form, which granted can be taken with a pinch of salt, since he was injured but as I said to me the reason why he is underperforming is mental not lacking the skill set of any kind.

Didn't see Brazil today but just saw the highlights, looked like he missed a lot of chances before the goal. But honestly what the feck was all that boohooing about at the end, blubbing like a baby, your a grown man for fecksake get a grip always a melodramatic bunch Brazilians.

Stalled is maybe fair. He was the best player in the world for 1-2 months when Messi was out. Messi came back, and Neymar gradually got worse that season.

He was very good for Barcelona last season, but his finishing was abject.

Then he was having a good season for PSG before the injury.

I do think he's stepped up in big games though. Neymar is very easy to dislike, but when the going gets tough, he doesn't hide.

Totally spot on. Reminds me a lot of 20-year old Ronaldo, when he was raw and immature. I just don't think Neymar will leave that stage

“Don’t touch me”

I like this ref.

The majority of these posts basically display the bias people have towards players they don't like. In groupthink, it's exacerbated and just looks like the knives are out for Neymar.

I hope some of you slating him are going to hold your hands up and give him credit if it's due.

Exactly. Even far from full fitness he had a decent game, with just a few details going his way he could be on a hat trick and best individual performance of the tournament.

As for those projecting all kinds of personnality flaws on him after the game because he was emotional and had a few tears, it speaks more about themselves than Neymar.

I must admit seeing him being bullied by Kuipers all game long was great comedy though.

It's weird to hate such a brilliant player. As if we've never had a player dive or play act - Young and Herrera for instance.

How can one develop such an emotion for someone they've never met?

Neymar is definitely worse than Ronaldo in that regard but the criticism towards Ronaldo is still fair imo. Ronaldo like Neymar often goes down when he feels the slightest of touches to win soft freekicks and penalties. In a way it's kind of clever and also an art but it's still cheating. Say what you want about Messi, but you always have the impression that he mostly tries to stay on his feet and complete a situation without trying to win a cheap freekick/penalty. Though to be fair that also has to do with his superior balance and dribbling ability compared to Neymar and especially Ronaldo.

Anyway it's a good thing that VAR is going to make it much harder to deceive the referees in the future.
