I'm gonna play devil's advocate and say that no matter how nuts North Korea is, forbidding them of having nuclear weapons is just hypocrite crap. People really need to stop thinking that the ruling elite of countries like Iran and N. Korea are literally crazy people, because they're not. They have to spout exaggerated threats because that's part of playing geopolitics but that doesn't mean they're actually going to nuke other countries, especially Western countries. NATO would bomb the shit out of both N. Korea and Iran and they know it themselves too.

It's not really the threat of the bomb itself but the leverage it brings. I'm no fan of regime change but if you need to pressure a dangerous regime it doesn't leave you many paths.

Clinton would've definitely not been goaded into negotiations by Kim. She would've simply ratcheted up the sanctions to where he would've dug himself in with no hope of negotiating. He would've obviously also not been incentivized to appear like he was capitulating to a woman.

Getting a meeting is one thing, translating that into a deal that North Korea sticks with is entirely another. They have consistently lied in all previous attempts to do business with them. If Trump pulls this off (which he hasn't yet) it will be very impressive.

Probably both. I'd imagine Xi has been having a word in Kim's ear to tell him to calm the feck down, but much as I detest Trump I do suspect the fact they're worried he might just obliterate them to feck has played a role. Maybe. Might be talking out my arse.

It is true. Iran only became a problem in the first place because the CIA overthrew their democratically elected government. Even now the Iranian people are very friendly towards westerners including Americans. If the US stopped it’s anti-Iranian strategic policy, Iran really would not be a problem for us.
It definitely isn't true. Iran isn't run by the Iranian people - its run by a religious dictatorship.
Actually its a country deeply divided between a religious theocracy and an increasingly moderate political wing that reflects the desires of the mass majority of the people. A sensible and intelligent national strategy would be to encourage that moderate wing and give them the support to drive the theocratic figureheads further and further into irrelevance. A stupid national policy would brand them as 'evil' and keep handing the theocrats free propaganda victories on a near weekly basis, causing the moderates to keep losing ground.
I think that's perfectly plausible after Khamenai pulls out of Lebanon, Syria, Yemen, and Iraq.
