North Korea

Really feels like this is all coming to a head now

Before I never really thought anything significant would happen.

Let's hope President 11 and the Chinese are putting adequate economic pressure on Kim to knock it off before Drumpf gets any more crazy ideas.

If a missile breaks up while carrying a nuclear warhead what happens?

I think there's a specific method in the bomb that explodes the nuclear part so presumably as long as that condition isn't met it just drops wherever based on it's trajectory?

Quite willing to believe I'm wrong on that but I've heard it's exceptionally hard to cause the reaction that explodes a nuclear bomb hence why dropped bombs in the past haven't detonated.

This was my understanding as well but I wasn't 100% sure.

Our knowledge of East Asian geography is about as competent as one of our students'. First we lose an entire naval fleet, now we can't figure out where a missile went.

Pretty sure the naval fleet thing was a bluff and the current WH were a bit naive to believe that the real story wouldn't get out.

I remember reading an article a while back, in the NYT I think, that said Obama instigated a program to sabotage their missile launches. Makes you wonder if these failed tests are because they are being tampered with. I mean, obviously I am clueless but is it not uncommon for missiles to just explode just after launch?

'Thanks a lot, Obama... ...wait, that's a good thing? Oh...We meant see how Trump stopped Kim Jong but Hussein Obama couldn't? Exactly.'

It's like kids in a playground, one kid says he's hard so the school bully's crowd around him giving him little digs, goading him into smacking one of them just so they can beat the shit out of him.

Sort of... just with the added dangers of Seoul being obliterated, millions being blown up in a nuclear strike... nuclear fall out potentially into China, Russia, Japan and of course South Korea.. . The probability of the state collapsing and potentially millions faced with starving or traipsing through huge land mine installations to find food and medical treatment.
Followed by the whole geopolitical clusterfeck of potential insurgency and who puts boots on the ground without that pissing off one or more of Russia China and the states
Yeah... it's just kids in the playground

The question is whether Kim is a rational actor or not - as in, is he genuinely suicidal in the belief that he can get away with launching rockets at South Korea, Japan, or U.S. ships and thinks he will survive ?

Does he genuinely feel he can survive if he does not?
Has the USA basically decided on regime change or are they going to let him and the Kim dynasty carry on provided he agrees to no nukes (and can that dynasty maintain power in Korea if they are seen to back down)...
So it's hard to get a read on what he may do...
I mean if you think your going to die and see your family dynasty brought to its end either way then perhaps the blaze of glory is the rational choice?

I don't think the US is interested in regime change. They are more interested in not allowing Kim - a nuclear armed totalitarian dictator - to do whatever he wants next to a major ally where it has thousands of troops stationed. In terms of power, the US will exert its dominance if pressed.

He's not going to agree to having no nukes, and why should he? When everyone that is surrounding him goading him has them why should he not have them?

He will have to, as the walls will close in on him from both the south, the west, and China. They will progressively put pressure on him. The fact that Kim is running a deeply insecure dictatorship that is petrified of democracy isn't the rest of the world's problem.

If he was left alone it wouldn't be the rest of the worlds problem.

If he was left alone it wouldn't be the rest of the worlds problem.

He can't be left alone. The mere fact that there is a democratic state that would otherwise merge with his country if he wasn't around, right next door, means that his fragile dictatorship is under constant pressure to survive - both from the pressure of a democratic system next door, and the need to constantly prove to his patronage network of North Korean elites, that he is strong enough to ensure the regime's survival.

The same principle can be applied to Putin's antics in Ukraine and Syria. It has nothing do to with anything other than for Putin to prove he is strong for domestic consuption to ensure Russian elites don't get any ideas of overthrowing him.

Rinse and repeat for all other dictatorships.

Backing him into a corner and forcing him into an action is not going to cause anything good.

There's no backing anyone into a corner. He is conducting nuclear tests which is unacceptable to everyone including China. Hence the big deal.

That's insane.

Shocking that they covered it up for over half a century in what would have changed the USA forever if it did detonate.

You wonder what other close calls there have been and been covered up.

The feck you talking about?
Saying America have never conducted nuclear tests? :wenger:
At least he's letting everyone know about it.

I stand corrected then, I much prefer my nutcase nuclear armed countries conducting their shit in secret so no one know what the cnuts are up to. Much better.

I wonder what that would have done to the world. It may have forced a change in the world, it may have started a removal of the worlds nuclear programs.
Probably not though.

They're simulated these days.

You obviously don't understand how this works. The powerful states get to have nukes. The not so powerful ones don't and if they try to get them, will be crushed by those who already do so that they can maintain the political/economic/and military order.

Unless they are Israel, India or Pakistan?

None of that will matter if he can't get his missiles to move out of NK. The last 2 were abysmal failures so if that carries on he can't defend himself and the regime and he can't attack anyone else.

If he plucks up the courage to do a 3rd missile test and that fails he's going to have to think very seriously about how he's going to get out of the ridiculous mess his aggressive posturing has got him into. How much longer can he take the embarrassment and ridicule caused by his bombs fizzling out after a few yards I wonder. He can hardly anihilate the USA with large fireworks so his visit to the negotiating table may come without any other country lifting a finger to help it on it's way.
