Well chavs vs pool Draw should show what an important win it was today 3 points and only us on citys tail
And in all seriousness, that's where we'll finish.

It's as SAF used to say. 'We win and watch the rest cut each other's throats.' That's exactly what's happening

With Spurs, Chelsea and Liverpool all dropping points today (plus I fancy Huddersfield to get a result against City) a hard earned 1-0 win against the battlers of Brighton is looking rather sweet. Perspective and all that.

It feels quite nice to actually be chasing City rather than chasing the top 4 and spending most of the season in 5th/6th place.

This is the first time since SAF that we look like a good team. Not perfect, but there is promise.

 What in, Subbuteo?

You can see every team we play target their attack on Ashley Young’s side cause he ain’t no defender, our manager doesn’t rate any left back on the books so we gotta buy again, ridiculous, it’s depressing seeing the sheiks doing so good and we look like we did today :(

He hasn't been playing well but neither have many of the very good players around him. It's easy to bemoan not signing players like Salah, Mane and whoever else but we don't play football in the way Liverpool do.

Who are these good players who haven't been playing well? Martial and Pogba are the genuine talent with world class potential, and they are playing well enough -- our only attacking players who actually do something useful. Likes of Rashford, Fellaini and Mata are average and this is all you can expect from them. I'll give you Lukaku, but his form has nothing to do with the system, he even flubbed good chances today that Pogba laid to him on a plate.

Young is playing well under Jose too, atleast as much as is his level.

EDIT: In addition, Klopp's gegenpressing system has nothing to do with Salah's pace and eye for goal. That is not system related, it is the basics of every attacking player's skillset. If he had a specialist job in that system that Jose doesn't require, then you have a point. But a winger who runs fast, beats a man and scores is hardly system specific. Every manager would kill to have one.

After this match I think this is our best line-up:

7L6Qhqs.jpg

Rashford instead of Martial and Lingard instead of Mkhi if either Mkhi or Martial are out of form. Before anyone says Mkhi has been shit, I would like to tell them that anyone who was played in that position has been shit. The players look like they haven't played with each other because too much rotation has been going on in the front 4 expect Lukaku.

Matic will have to work his ass off in that team and we may concede a great deal of possesion on the whole, but I like the idea of Ibra behind Lukaku, really feel there could be a useful partnership in there somewhere.

38 games undefeated at Old Trafford equals formidable record.

Brighton were tiring and had possession loss mistakes just before and after the killer goal. Flagging a bit. Accurate passing probably tired Brighton out?

Right not to stop when Knockaert was injured as he goes down too easily. Ashley Young allowed to come forward so the ball could be passed into the gap left at the back. Calculated risk and from Brighton's point of view was the difference to their detriment. Small margins and the smaller clubs get overwhelmed more often than not by skill, punished by mistakes rather than pure luck.

Against two large centre halves a Griezmann type of striker is more effective.

Was impressed by Lukaku's workrate. Didnt seem phased at being moved around the pitch to accomodate Zlatan. Truely played for the team today. The big man is fast becoming a fan favorite.

An excellent 3 points at home. We have won 10 of 10 this season apparently. Our home record is unbelievable. Sadly we are on the road for the next two...big tests for us.

The performance was fecking embarrassing. More embarrassing was the complete lack of sportsman spirit that we showed today when their player was down and when the ball was put out for a throw in but we didn't return it back. Classless

Our attacking was absolutely dreadful today. Thought Young and Lindelof were the only positives today. Ibra back is a huge boost for us.

With Spurs, Chelsea and Pool dropping points, this makes the win more satisfying. Made it very hard for ourselves, but take the 3 points and move on. Old Trafford is a fortress again.

That's because the player was deliberately milking it despite a very good and fair challenge. Trust me this is the kind of thing I'd pick up on but I think we were justified in carrying on today, IMHO of course.

It was a very strong tackle - how can you judge if a player is faking it or not? Also what about the resulting throw in?

Very happy with the 3 points considering everyone around us dropped points today.

I didn’t feel we were as bad as many on here expressed. Brighton were quite well organized and worked their socks off!

We are definitely still missing a couple pieces to our team. Martial was quiet today. Lindelof put in a solid performance. Mata loses too many balls in areas that leaves us vulnerable. He lost a ball right in the middle of the pitch that almost cost us like it cost us a goal against Huddersfield.

You can tell pogba was a class above the others in midfield. We need more creative and imposing players in midfield.

That's bullshit! Their player was time wasting and the sooner they do what rugby does and treat players while allowing the game to continue the better

Take off the red tinted glasses mate and imagine if it had been Rashford who was down.

Got to be up there with some of the worst wins we have ever had in terms of performance.
SAF's team with Rooney,Ronaldo and Tevez won ugly many a time.

Though what I'd give to have those 3 back in our team:drool:

Big 3 points! Not a good performance though. I take that though. Need to play better against Watford though to win that one.

Utd need a world class no. 10. The current ones are not good enough.

I'm not saying he's' faking it, but he was definitely milking it. Even the referee felt no obligation to stop the game, as neither did we. We didn't give the ball back after the throw because we felt it was them who displayed the unsporting behaviour.

It's worth mentioning there was another incident later, and we did give the ball back to them.

I don't need to take any red tinted glasses mate! Stop making us out as the vanguards of altruism in sport. If that's what you want, change sports to synchro swimming or something.

PS If Rashford dived and rolled around to waste time, I'd be embarrassed and want the game to continue

Surely if you're so concerned about Rashford you'd want the physios on asap, rather than waiting for permission?

It's a ridiculous system in football. Sit down and you get to stop the entire game?! Utterly ridiculous.

This is my concern. It seems some are accepting the level of performance such as today. I am less concerned about the performance of other teams. We have spent ridiculous amounts of money on attacking players over the last few seasons and look at how we are REGULARLY playing as an offensive unit. It's crap and shouldn't be good enough for Manchester United FC. No way.

He reminded me of Dirk Kuyt :)

Not sure where to begin, but today is yet another evidence that United is still struggling in Post-Ferguson era.
When Ferguson retired we fell of the cliff with the Moyes appointment (went from 1st along with winning 5 of last 7 championship being only GD and 1 point from winning 7 in row, which in all historical contest is probably (or one of) the strongest long term run English topflight, and since SAF no team has won back to back titles). The worst offender for me from fan POV is when Moyes spew/that ballock/lie Ferguson left him an agening squad that even Ferguson would struggle to win with. While there lot of evidence to the contrary. Had SAF stayed I willing to bet my house on that the outcome 2013-14 would have been very different. When the United board realized its error with the Moyes appointment it was too late (to save that season) and we are in many ways still recovering from the Moyes appointment. There have been articles on the web and forum threads discussing what went wrong behind the seen, when Moyes was here. But even if dawned on the board that United need someone with credentials Van Gaal was obvious choose but unfortunately for us and Van Gaal is the fact that club football has passed him by so his outdated methods brought us nowhere some would say we regressed further.

So when we hired Mourinho it was finally a step in right directions but 1 problem Mourinho has never built team or restore club to its past glory, Mourinho has always worked best when taking ready made team on bring of winning something big. Thus in hind sight we should probably have hired him in 2013. We would have got more out of the Fergie's final team with him in charge than we eventually got with Moyes. Why do I say this? Because for me Mourinho has always worked best when taking on ready made teams that are on the brink of winning something big. But when we finally hired Mourinho last year our squad left lot to be desired when it comes to a champions winning team, thus only a stupid would have assumed that by bringing in Mourinho last year all would be magically better. Mourinho's a very good manager but not a miracle worker, (miracles like Leicester can happen but they are not sustainable in the long run) but there signs that we might get back to where we were in 2013 eventually. Mourinho has made some good sigings although I still think our team needs further additions.

As I said in the beginning there is still long road a head of us, today's performance (and the past few weeks) are evidence of that being the case. Have I been happy with our performance in last few matches? nope, but as long as team keeps winning its okey (but unfortunately that hasn't always been the case since October), but as the team is struggling to play proper football currently this is vital to keep winning as that will bring winning mentality and hopefully our manager and the players recolonize that there is lot of room for improvement regarding our performance and more entertaining football will then hopefully follow.
All we can hope that the lesson had been learnt from Basel where team stopped playing in second half after struggling to score after creating some pretty fine changes in first half. That its important to keep playing when things get tough and not give up, if that start to happen on regular bases then questions need be asked as the buck stops with the manager.

B-O-R-I-N-G, I almost fell asleep. But considering the players we have now I'm not surprised.

Heading back from the match, it wasn't the most entertaining but we got the job done. Brighton went there for a draw, the goalkeeper was time wasting 50 minutes in and the ref done nothing. Our wide players could've done a lot more than what they did, our build up play was very slow at times which was frustrating.

Seeing as the next game thread isn't up, I'll ask it here. Why are we playing Watford midweek and then another game at the weekend? Are we playing catch up for something?

We're not the manager ffs we don't set standards and its not dangerous to enjoy 3pts after today. Wierd perspectives on this forum.

Ignoring all that, these type of fixtures where we scrape a goal are such a big part of our seasons down the years I'm perplexed we have 'fans' so concerned when it happens

Who's suddenly going to spring up in 8 months?

And if we are only starting to look for someone in 8 months that means our whole transfer window is ruined. Also harms our pre-season. If we are to bring in someone, we must have someone in mind now. It's obvious there is no one.

Your plan seems to just fire the current guy and then we will see as it goes.
It really isn't mate. It's to stick with the current guy until the end of the season to minimise disruption and give us time to find an alternative.

If we're being petty, your plan seems to be to stick with the current guy indefinitely in blind faith.

After calming down all I'd say is 3 points. Obviously, it was far from being an entertaining match but we got the job done.

Some real test coming up now and I just hope that players will stay fit and Jose has a plan.

The FA doesn't give a feck about English teams in the CL so they dont have a winter break. That means we have to play a ridiculous amount of games during the winter.

3 points with a poor performance.Brighton are solid at the back but our attacking play needs to improve.Only positive was Lindelof's performance.

Have you thought about how much time the new manager will take to make the team play according to his tactics and new manager with want to sign new players, these new players will take time to get used to playing with our existing players. All the work which Mourinho has done will go to waste. We also don't have unlimited money to keep changing the manager and to keep bringing in new players like Man City.
All fair points, but what's the alternative? Renew Mourinho's contract and watch him serve up buckets more of this dross?

I don't think Mourinho's work would go to waste to be honest. If you look at when Wenger joined Arsenal, he took a team which was brilliantly organised, bolted on a decent attack and created one of the best teams in Europe. Mourinho's got our defence so well-drilled that I don't think anyone could waste that. Not even Klopp :D

We had a very good performance against Newcastle, just a week ago.
