The fact that he's wearing a red shirt? I trust Jones, Rojo, Smalling over him. I'm sure he's a nice guy, but he had a crucial slip and was saved by an offside call against a subpar team. Hope I'm wrong because I don't like to see us waste money.
He needs games and other than that slip he had a good one.

Good start, ok game, Afro my MOTM, good to have champions league back.

We should probably wait until he has played more than 5 games for us before writing off his United career no?

Good win, good performance. I think only Miki had a really poor game but the rest were fine.

Only disappointment was the crowd who just didn't get going.

Routine win really, nowt exciting but good to get 3 points on the board. Can't complain too much.

Attacking players need sort it out though.

Mata started strong but was completely anonymous by the time the second half had started.

Martial was average at best, but didn't see a lot of the ball to be fair. Agree with others that he benefits most as a sub when defenders are tired. (Though people could fairly argue this applies to Rashford as a sub also).

Miki is frustrating, has a lot of flashy moments and is a clever player, but can go completely missing for significant periods as well. It's just about kept him in the good books so far, but he won't last if it continues.

Very good performance. Could've been a few more goals probably too. And most of it without Pogba, hopefully that injury isn't too big. Don't think anyone did poorly, bit sloppy with the finishing from Miki especially but pretty good from everyone. Mkhitaryan probably the biggest reason in terms of our domination and constant attacking in their half, he might lose it a decent amount but he also creates a stupid amount of chances and is always picking up great positions and opening up space. Also his turns on the ball are class. Martial was a threat on the left and did well, though I might be alone in that? Thought he went past his man constantly.

Mata probably the quietest one but he did alright too.

Exactly as it should be, 4th tier league team at Old Trafford, dispatched without getting out of second gear.

That was a good performance, dispatched them with ease. Young, Fellaini and De Gea were all excellent.

I still hope he will come good, but he looked poor in the preseason and this didn't do much to change my mind. I have higher aspirations than simply reaching the knockouts, and those errors would've been the end of us against the likes of Barca, Real, PSG, Chelsea, City, Bayern.

A good win and performance was decent. Were clinical and that physical threat we have now gives us an extra threat when we need to break teams down. Better teams would've punished us with a couple of those sloppy defensive moments though.

Mkhitaryan and Mata offered little, and it's a weakness that needs to be sorted along with our full backs.

You can't sort out these 2.
Last year they were goal shy and this year, it's more of the same.
They are in the late 20s, so their existing skill-set is likely to be the skill-set with which they retire.
Don't expect any improvements from either, at their age.

He is clearly still coming to grips with his new team, if he is still finding his feet when we come up against the elite teams then he won't be starting. He had a hell of a lot of clubs chasing him for the past 18 months and the best defensive coach in the world sanctioned a deal to make him one of the most expensive defenders in history. Let's have a little patience.

professional and comfortable

hopefully a few days rest sorts Pogba out but Fellaini was very good - Mhiki very bright

still we are lacking that star quality in attack that someone like Robben/Griezmann/insert name of elite attacking player gives you

not sure teams are afraid of our attacking players

Gotta love Jose

'PlayStation football'

Well what would you call it? Thought we were sloppy at the back but got away with it caus they were shite. Better teams will punish us if we make those mistakes regularly, and going forward we were nothing special, and didn't need to be.

Fellaini had a good game, but I'm struggling to pick out anyone else that really impressed.

Like I'm not having a go, we didn't have to get out of second gear, just nothing to write home about.
This is exactly how I feel; it was a poor performance but with a nice scoreline.

Insert any player whoever existed

I was personally a bit disappointed with Martial tonight, really wanted him to score or at least be more involved. He is not going to be the player we want him to be(or maybe he just isn't good enough to be) without a consistent run of starts. Rashford plays more minutes and Mourinho prefers him, that's why I said he missed his chance.

Delighted for Rashers though.

Certainly not a barnstormer but got the job done emphatically and well in the end. It was good to see Fellaini and Young have their uses, which some United fans would do well to remember. It was a shame Mkhi and Martial couldn't take their chances, the latter could do with a confidence boost (although I thought he was better in the second half and didn't mind his display half as much as a few in the Matchday).

Mourinho isn't pleased at all in his post match interview, and I don't blame him as I'm sure he wants to see us playing better and tidier than this over the 90 minutes. That being said as starts to European campaigns go, barring Pogba's injury, they don't come much better than a few goals scored and none conceded.

Decent performance.

Call it what you want but we basically won tonight by virtue of being absolutely miles better then Basel all over the pitch.

A win's a win's a win, and that's the most important thing, just any suggestion we played particularly well is off the mark for me.

Mourinho wasn't particularly cheery in his post match interview.

  • It was a job well done on a rainy day in a CL fixture where the opposition fans were more audible than us
  • Fellaini did not let down Mourinho with a brilliant MOTM performance
  • Lindelof needs to step-up his performances
  • For some reason large parts of the game felt very boring

I will try... but whereas Bailly impressed immediately, Lindelof has not. I'm certainly hoping he will do better.

How is Lingard the lowest rated player? Came on and did a great job. Did more in that cameo than Mata did the entire game.

The main agenda for this game was that we were playing at home. We had to score and get 3 points. 2 more ins and a draw should easily get us through to the next round which could also help us concentrate on the league.

The injury to Pogba was kind of a shitty one since he's been immense since the start of the campaign. He's bound to miss 2-3 games which would mean Herrera comes in to partner Matic and the issue could be that we could perhaps struggle to score. Yes, we didn't struggle tonight but Pogba plays a huge part with his incisive passing which could get tricky with Herrera. Mhiki will have to play a more important part with creating for Lukaku. Lindelof had an average game... He's still growing. Ashley Young was superb especially since we had someone come in and actually put in attacking crosses. Valencia seems to have deteriorated in that aspect. Rashford scored on his debut once again. And Lukaku has been consistent for us. It's after all Basel... I wouldn't read too much into the win.

Correct.
Under LVG we'd probably have got 0-0, but Jose has brought some of the swagger back.
We played a team which we should've beaten comfortably...and we did beat comfortably.

Nice to know we have players who can fill in others shoes and give them a rest while getting the job done.

Was really impressed with the crossing tonight from Young and Blind aswell as trying it more often like Fellainis assist for Rashford, wing play has always been the United way.

Hope Pogbas ok and well done Rashford for scoring on another debut.

Good start to CL campaign. Changed the whole back four. Comfortably put them to bed with few alarms.

Losing Pogba a blow. Hope he's back in time for the dippers. Credit to Fellaini and Young.
