Post-match discussion

Collectively we were poor. We’re still unbeaten and a point at the tip isnt bad to look back on.

DDG - speechless
Darmian - poor/ out of his depth
Herrera - looked a yard behind everyone else
Lukaku - isolated/ cant work miracles

Difficult match when there were no options for the midfield. Herrera was appalling, didn't win any 50/50. I guess José could have played Jones at DM to help the other two but I understand he didn't want to disrupt the defence by taking out his best cb.

It's happened too many times in big matches like this against for me to blame the players. Poor as they may have been (which is always the case in similar scenarios), I'm pointing fingers at José.

Roll on the next game, please!

Matic was excellent, DDG world class save, Liverpool pissed off & whining.

What more do you want?

Klopp's interview right now makes this even sweeter.

We got what we wanted, they didn't.

Aren't we usually not so good after international breaks? This was also an international break where we have picked up injuries and others playing with knocks. As others said a point there is good, we will play it differently at home.

No it wouldn't. I don't know about you but I think the likes of Manchester United, just like Real, Barcelona and other top teams, should aim to be the best. When you consider our resources and status on the global stage, we should look to be on the same wavelength as other European elites and play them toe to toe. Winning the league alone does not make you that, it simply makes you the best of the bunch. Of course it is great considering where were the past 3 years but long term, it is not enough.
First and foremost the aim for the season has always been to win the league. Ask Fergie what he was aiming to achieve at the start of the season and the answer would be 'win the league'. By whatever means necessary. Anything else is secondary. I wonder if you are a 'football' fan first and foremost, and maybe lacking the tribal nature of a football fan that has been brought up in the culture of English football and local rivalry? Not judging either way, just saying that we're coming at this from a different perspective.

I totally understand going to Anfield with a defensive setup. For most, this still means having some sort of plan to score a goal and ask some questions of the oppositions defence, to try and exploit the gaps in behind the team dominating. It's a valid approach.

I think mourinho is the only top manager around who thinks it's valid to just not bother with an attacking plan for 90 minutes and defend from first to last whistle.

It's weird really. And given our frailties, you'd have to think there is some payoff in testing our defence at opportune moments. Mourinho didn't even want to know about that today. It's not like we're barca in their heyday. Hard to justify really.

Missed the whole match. Looks like I was better off not watching. Sucks to read that Jose sent defensive again. First big test for Jose, Lukaku and the team. I would still say this team is not convincing enough to get to the next level if the aim is to play defensive in big matches and hope to win with a counter.

I don't ever remember Jose shitting the bed against other big teams when he was manager of Chelsea. They used to outplay us constantly at OT.

Does that say something about the confidence he has in the team? Against the Liverpool forward line I don't blame him, even without Mane.

Chelsea had a defensive line with the likes of Terry, Carvalho and Ashley Cole

We had Jones, Smalling and Darmian.

At the end of the day we played a team without Pogba, Fellaini and Bailly. All three would've started if fit.

Saw LVG at the start and this game reminded me of one of his. Very poor game. Mourinho complains about teams trying not to win against us and it seems like he tried not to win today!

Too much respect for Liverpool who were missing their best player. We should have been at them. Everyone looked pedestrian. No control, no class, no creativity, poor energy.

Liverpool were equally poor, if their fans or klopp think another way then let their delusion continue.

Idiotic to think we have spent over 350 million in 2 summers to go and play with Ashley Young on the right flank. I really didn't understand that decision when Liverpool didn't play anyone on the left flank, with Cou always going through the middle. Sometimes Mou makes you lose your mind. Didn't deserve the point at all.

Darmian, Smalling, Herrera, Young are not good enough for a team like Manchester United. Their playing mentality is not good enough for Manchester United. End of story.

Disagree about Young. If we had any intent to win the game we would have continued with Young and Valencia as our wingbacks.

Darmian is the only player that has no future here. Herrera and Smalling definitely should not be starters. Miki was so so woeful today and really now needs to fight for his spot.... had a couple of chances to play through balls, his major strength, and served up utter dross.... which totally screws with our tactics if we plan to sit deep.

Correct my misunderstanding of defending deep and countering if I'm wrong, but if Martial and the wide players defensively contribute and are pinned back then shouldn't Lukaku be making more channel runs to relieve pressure and invite the counter? From what I can see Lukaku is just a little bit lazy when it comes to his off-the-ball running and often remains central in congested areas.

People dont moan about one point at Anfield, so dont spin shit and real issue some having regarding today`s game.
Don't bother they keep spinning it however they like.

It's obvious the problem lies elsewhere. I mean we can't just expect us to be this toothless and cowardly every time we face a big team, it's exhausting and depressing.

To call that an "ugly" performance is a monstrous understatement. Hideous. A point at Anfield is a decent result, but could have been three with a modicum of positive football. None of United's forward players contributed anything today, although had Lukaku finished his chance and the game ended 1-0, it would have been a real smash and grab with a good outcome. Would have made sitting through that 90 minutes worthwhile.

You gang of absolute spoilt people.

This place is ridiculous.
do feck off. There is nothing wrong in wanting and expecting a team of United's capabilities to attack one of the worst defences in the league, rather than shitting the bed. We have said we are happy with the point, but the performance was fecking atrococius and we are better than that! José needs to believe we have the paleyers capable to go to the places like anfield and get a win ffs.

You happy with our performance then? Result asside.

Exactly, people need some perspective.

this is crazy. This was not an ultra defensive team that was put out. It was a regular team with Lukaku, Martial and Mikhi up front with Herrera and Matic in midfield with Young .
Now players were bad today but I do not for one believe that Jose told them to go and hoof the ball up. The main issue without Pogba has been our inability to hold the ball to bring the attackers into play. Without Fellaini we cannot use the aerial route to get the ball to the attackers. Coming away from Liverpool with a point is a good result.

We're usually poor at anfield but even still, that was awful. Liverpool very much deserved the win.

Could have easily played for another 90min without scoring. Quite genuinely reminded me of watching Burnley today.
I am sick of that phrase. I hear that often in recent years in all sports.
"We had better chances, we deserved to win". "We had more possession , we deserved to win". And my favourites; " We were unlucky , we deserved to win". " We played beatiful , we deserved to win".
Team that scores one goal more than opponent deserves to win. If shots are 20-1, and possession is 80-20, if you didn't score, you didn't deserve to win.

Oh yes, i have a winner- " we wanted a win more so we deserved to win".

Our front 6 looked leggy from international duty. They were very poor in terms of touch, movement and passing. Add that to a ‘parked bus’ approach means we looked our least threatening this season.

I thought the tactics were fine but team were unable to carry them out to full effect

And how many times did we play with that kind of game plan those days?? In a space of 1 year we've already this twice at Anfield, once at Etihad and at Stamford Bridge. Playing defensive or shite because the other team is better is different, approaching the game with the sole mindset to get a point is embarrassing for Man Utd. I don't remember many games under SAF when we had 1 shot on target, even if we were playing a bit conservatively. Moreover the fact is we are a better side than those dippers but still we play like this. That's what irks me.

What’s last season got to do with it? You expect a new manager to boss those fixtures in his first season?

Re Liverpool. Their record against the top 6 speaks for itself.

Alot of people seem to forget the form guide goes out of the window when United play Liverpool. Just shows how many unrealistic kids we have on the forum these days.

United were missing more key players than Liverpool and the performance reflected that. It was also what we have come to expect following a lengthy international break.

All in all a better point for United than Liverpool, unbeaten run continues and we get through a big game with big players missing at Anfield.

I'm satisfied with the bigger picture as will Jose be.

fecking Shreeves pushing for the Lukaku incident. cnut

Souness’ analysis of the incident is spot on. feck Shreeves & nev

Very happy. Top of the league.

I don't want us to play like Arsenal at Anfield and get smashed 4-0.

Extremely disappointing by both team and manager, but we didn’t lose so despite our bad performance I’m overall happy with the outcome. It’s liverpool who should come away fuming. Make no mistake though this was no masterclass akin to last year, Liverpool dropped 2 points. We defended very well but leaked key chances. If we weren’t going to go offensive today, we probably never will.

I genuinely think there’s a case to be made that our players are struggling against Liverpool mentally because they’re being shackled and the lack of freedom they’re suddenly exposed to compare to your routine match day is making them panic. That’s 3 games against Liverpool now and never in any of them have we ever taken the lead.

I look at it this way, we drew at their ground and it’s advantage to us when they come to OT.

Mourinho: we will play with 9 strikers and 1 defenders. That was a clue.

Mourinho: It’s just 3 points and you prepare for it the same way as any other game. Well, we didn’t look like the same team as all our other games.
Well said. Talks bollocks as we all know this would happen, the cowardly Mourinho in big games
