hey...I'm just hoping this late goal is a stepping stone to us clicking as a team mentally......honestly.....I feel it....my grandmothers tea leaves said so.....

it's really weird..but I just have the feeling we are going to do really well against our main rivals..not sure why...

As do I. We play better against teams who come out of their own half. Newcastle had a flat 4 with 3 sitting in front of it today.

Not to mention Carrick is back.

Is he saying 'Wait, wait!' to Giggsy?

Maybe Giggsy was pushing for subs sooner but Van Gaal was told him to be patient, as seen by Mata coming on so late. We got lucky though, defensive error gifted us the three points, LVG can't take credit for anything there.

People saying smash and grab are well wide of the mark.

It wasn't vintage but we were totally dominant. If they'd nicked one, yes, smash and grab, but we deserved to win on balance of play.

We are lacking penetration but created enough to win the game. Rooney had a good goal chalked off and there were a few gilt-edged chances - Rooney, Fellaini (x2), Young.

Deserved. Should be scoring much more though against a poor side like Newcastle. We are just extremely sloppy in the final third.

We forced the error though.

That was the best performance from us since the first few games at the begining of the season. Yes its not great but it was certainly a lot better.
There were still some dodgy performances on the pitch but overall it was better.

I was surprised that di Maria went off for Januzaj. Yes, he was sloppy, but he was our main source of chances with Young being poor in that regard today. Young may have scored the goal, but going forward, Newcastle contained him easily, and we had a tough time creating chances on the left. Januzaj should have come on for Young instead of di Maria, but Young did score the winner, so whatever.

Fellaini should have went off sooner. He was slow and ponderous on the ball, and he made it a 2 vs. 3 battle in midfield for much of the match. Yes, he did get into good positions in the box and had a couple of good chances, but with us having no one creating through the middle, he should have at least kept it a 3 vs. 3 in midfield rather than continuously go up to the Newcastle's defensive line. I was glad that Rooney adapted to that situation and dropped back whenever Blind or Herrera needed someone in the middle to pass to, but he should have done this more often for us to really disorganise their defence.

Other than that, though, Rooney did quite well up front, I feel. His movement, energy, and touches weren't too shabby. He adapted quite well to the situations, and he made it tough for both of Newcastle's defenders. He's looked sharper than he's ever been as a lone striker, which surprised me somewhat given that he's often performed poorly in that role for the past couple of seasons. He should have had a goal this match for all of the good work he put in up front.

Defensively, we were okay, though Newcastle got most of their chances through our sloppiness. Rojo had a really tough time against Obertan in the air, which is worrying as he appeared to have improved in dealing with aerial challenges. Valencia was very slow and ponderous going forward, whilst Rojo was a threat on the attack with some fine deliveries.

It still really irks me how van Gaal doesn't play a creative #10 for us. It really goes against his philosophy. This match was perfect for Mata as we needed an attacking midfielder to create chances. Having Fellaini in there meant that we had no penetration in the middle other than via di Maria. Other than that, we were quite sloppy, overall, which made it tougher for us to get the victory.

I'm quite relieved we got the 3 points we deserved. We had some very good chances to get a goal, but Krul had a decent match, and we didn't capitalise on the chances we had. There is some promise to our attacking game, but we need to have someone creating chances through the middle. It isn't enough that we only have wingers creating chances whilst building up too slowly for such an approach. This side is crying out for Mata to play behind a striker at the moment. We cannot sacrifice creativity for physicality.

Who knows, would certainly be worrying if you're right.

I am just at a loss. How can LVG not see a team *still* misfiring in March. Arguably we are getting duller as the season progresses.

At this point I certainly do not get his "philosophy" :(.

Mixed feelings again. It's a good result and another cause the players would have given up on last year. Still not enough about the performance to offer much hope of hanging on to a top four place, though.

First half was good I though, better than anything we've seen in a long time

Agreed. I'm surprised by a lot of the moans on here. Maybe that's because I didn't follow the match day thread. it tends to be a pretty depressed place.

We deserved the win and important 3 points but our attacking play is just soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo bad !

We same to defend as a team, we same to be able to dominate possession by circulating the ball well in the team but we fail every single match to attack as a team. There is no creativity, no tempo in our attacks, no intelligent movements from our attackers or midfielders. There are short moments of 5 or 10 minutes where our players seem to realize they need to put more pressure to try and force an opening and our tempo quickens, we pressure the other team and get some chances but none of them are dangerous enough to really command a goal. That leaves set pieces but we are horrible at corners, not great at free kicks and due to our players never infiltrating in the box we rarely get a penalty. Another option we try is to get the ball to the wings and cross to Fellaini or Rooney and hope something comes from that, but our crosses are not good enough and we don't get the ball quick enough into position which makes it easy to defend. Counter attacks almost never happen because we waste the majority of ball possession passing side ways on the midfield allowing the other team to sit back infront of their goal and on the rare occassion that we can make a counter attack we are too slow and too sloppy to really create something from it. The only way we seem to manage to get a goal is to somehow try and force the other team into making a defensive mistake and capitalising on it. Which is exactly how most of our chances came to being in this game and it is exactly how we got our goal.

Something really needs to change, I just don't understand it. It is not the formation, it is not the individual quality of the players because a team with Januzaj, Rooney, Di Maria, Mata, Young, RVP, Falcao and te likes should have no problem playing attacking football and being dangerous infront of goal and Van Gaal is a renowed trainer for playing attractive attacking football, he is not a coach that has no idea on how to make him team better at attacking. Sure he has forced the players to take it down a notch and play more safe so we don't concede easy goals anymore but it is really becoming high time that we start focussing on fixing our attacking issues because we are not going to get points against the really good teams playing like this and we have quite a couple to come in the next games.

We forced the error though.

Sure but we didn't look like scoring in the last 10 minutes until then. We should have been bombarding them, laying siege to their goal and playing with much more urgency. We should have won comfortable over the 90 minutes but got out of jail in the end.

I don't know what to think, I might have to watch the game once more. I thought we were the better team in first half and had better chances. Newcastle should have had a penalty, but I think Rooney's goal was wrongly disallowed. They had some good chances in second half.

All in all I think we’ve been a little lucky.

It wasn’t a bad performance I think, but Newcastle were awful. Di Maria form is worrying.

looks like the relationship between LVG and Giggs is not so harmonius looking at that. The push on the cheek, from a body language point of view, is one of aggression and empowerment

Bingo.

As I said in the match day thread when Krul saved Those two shots off the line, if that was Newcastle we'd be calling ourselves very lucky.

We were far from great, yet again, but anyone who saw that game as a better one for Newcastle is watching life through a forcefield of tinted shite. We should've been 2 up in the first half alone.

Is it me or did Giggsy not look too impressed with Van Gaal when celebrating the goal. Very stoney faced. Something not right there.

Yeah, saw that. My best guess was they'd disagreed about something (perhaps Giggsy wanted to persevere with ADM) and LVG was trying to get him to admit he'd been vindicated, while Giggs wasn't gonna give him the pleasure.

It might be a sign of where we are at the moment, but I didn't think we were that bad tonight. De Gea kept us in it with a couple of great saves, but that's why you have a goalkeeper, so that's fair enough...We brought the ball out from defence, not to any great effect, but I thought Smalling did it better than Evans, who looks as jumpy as f**k on the ball. Some nice build up play and we dominated for most of the game, without creating anything too dramatic. Good win, 3 points.

Not a chance.

completely agree with this.
Although he produced a poor cross at the end of the move, he got onto a long ball, obliterated the full back for pace, about a minute before he was taken off.

He's the main source of pace in the team.

However, we got away with it, rescued 2 extra points, which it's certain we'll need somewhere along the line!

10 games left. Gonna be tight.

Am I the only one who thinks that we did well today? Especially in the first half we created good chances but the finishing wasn't there. Second half we dropped off and didn't create much but it was not nearly as bad Saturday's game. Huge 3 points to keep us in the race for a spot.

It really does confuse me what Giggs thinks of LvG. Probably just a case of nothing and I'm reading too much into it/letting my personal bias seeping in but I do not think Giggs is enjoying it under LvG. The football is rubbish and it goes against almost everything Giggs was about. Still a good experience for Giggs and he needed a new perception of the game but he doesn't seem to be liking this at all.

The most pleasing aspect for me was a considerably better performance from Evans than his previous ones this season. Also, Rooney offers so much more upfront. Had it been RvP or Falcao there, it wouldn't have been a goal. RvP and Falcao are still important for us this season and may still score crucial goals, but today's front line, with Januzaj for AdM till AdM finds form and Mata for Fellaini can result in some sleek passing and movement.

Anyone see Van Gaals reaction to Giggsy? What was that all about

On a more dim note, it seems none of our players really relish a physical battle which is annoying to watch. The only person up for it was Rooney as proven by the hustle on the goal in the dying minutes.

I still feel we deserved the win though.

In that clip, he looks well pleased, then the second Van Gaal looks at him his face turns to thunder.

I wonder if he feels his input is minimal

We are sooooo lethargic in attack away from home. Every game is the same.

At least we seem largely solid at the back these days. Certainly when you compare us to some of those defensive performances at the start of the season.
