CL L Champions League Round of 16 1st Leg

Manchester United 0:2 Paris St Germain

Post-match discussion

Tue, 12 February 2019

Its half time in a two leg tie... we already proved we can go away and turn a result around in the CL against Juve this season. We can still go through.

I admire your optimism but i doubt. I was thinking that we would have needed four goals to see us through. A one nil or 2-1 to us would never be enough.

PSG basically did feck all (so did we) until they scored from a corner. From there on in they were the better side by far.

They’re a superior side to us. But in cups you need some luck. I don’t care what anyone says. The decision not to send off kimpembe beggars belief. It was a carbon copy of young’s foul on mbappe. 0-0 v ten men. It’s huge.

Before we get to criticising the players and the manager after a reality check, can we please accept that we have the poorest home support of all the English clubs in Europe? The only reason Old Trafford wasn't silent tonight was because the PSG fans were singing their heads off.

I'm more disappointed in the atmosphere than the performance of the players. Emptihad is louder than this in the Carabao Cup. Our away fans are amazing, but the home support is very embarrassing.
Where were you sat?

Stranger things have happened in the CL. Didn't someone beat Real Madrid / Barca away in the CL like 3-0 in the last couple of years and then end up getting smashed on the return leg?

Depends on your definition of outclassed I guess. But I never felt we were in the game after the opener. They played the ball around in 2nd gear and we couldn't lay a glove on them. I'd say that's pretty much being outclassed.

By your definition every game we lose is us getting outclassed and every game we win where we allowed one chance is also us getting outclassed. We pretty much played the ball around in 2nd gear too btw. Neither of the teams really tried I felt this whole game and thats what pissed me off. Their defense pretty much had nothing to do cos we never really got going at all. Mata is such a pointless player though. He's what I associate with Spurs. Neat and Tidy but no fight.

I thought we did ok in the first half but unfortunately crumbled in the second we just didn't get going, why weren't we trying some of the shots when we had a bit of space on the edge of the box, the crosses weren't getting past the first defenders. Slow where has the fast attacking gone?

Injuries definitely didn't help, especially 2 of the players we can ill afford to have injured, awful timing as well with Liverpool and Chelsea just around the corner any chance they will be back? If not who do you use do you try and propel Sanchez and Lukaku back to some sort of form or take a punt on some of the youth eg Greenwood? With hindsight should they have been on the bench and brought on against something like Fulham so they weren't pitched straight in the deep end and you could at least see how close to being ready they were?

This run of games will decide Ole's fate, it shows how well he's done we thought we could get a result here I had no hope we would beat them when we got the initial draw when Jose was in charge, however perhaps his CL experience would have helped? We now need to be careful we don't instantly descend into where we were before and lose v Chelsea who are in a state at the moment or against Liverpool, if he can stop this being 3 straight losses I still wouldn't mind seeing him as United full time manager. It's also time to see if he can do hairdryer as well as being nice.

Much as I'd love a miracle we needed to win or at least keep it as 0-0 tonight, they now have 2 away goals we need to go there without Pogba and score at least 2 and stop them scoring. And that's just to get extra time and penalties.

And I'm sorry if it feels like I'm rubbing it in, but I've had to read a lot of shite talking on these forums about PSG having close to no chance against a revived United side. I don't mean any disrespect, I just think PSG couldn't have done much better than what they did under the circumstances.

Apart from his mistake for the goal I actually thought Matic had a good game.

I thought he was our best player in the first half too but for that first goal he just switched off. Really could have done with a prime Scholes or Carrick tonight as PSG were much better at keeping the ball in the second half. We saw it against Juventus at OT where a team can come here and just strangle the life out of the game (and also have fullbacks that can contribute much more in attack).

There was definitely a lack of a 'plan B' tonight but that probably reflects more on our transfer policy than Ole. The trio of subs couldn't offer the same kind of threat but didn't offer anything else either. Square pegs, round holes etc.

Did you, at any point, felt United were threatening? I really didn't. I thought your only chance of getting somewhere was either a corner or a foul in the box. We can be pedantic on the definition of outclassed, but you faced a seriously diminished PSG missing two huge pieces and they had 5 times the amounts of shots on target, and the game finished 2-0 without United having any clear cut chance of scoring. Without De Gea, this would have been 3 or even 4-0.
We didn't deserve to score in the 1st half as we made too many poor decision- martials touch was bit off a few times but we weren't troubled as our high pressing was working good. We've faced plenty of dead PL teams and struggled with Mata and Sanchez on the wings so it's normal PSG would take advantage but there was hardly a class above.

We need to add 3 4 ready players in the summer, but with extending contracts giving to Jones, Young and Smalling is not a good start at all. Can Ole get it right, and addresses the weaknesses we have and replace?

Ref was a bag of shit but ultimately psg gave us a lesson today, they played the occasion perfectly whereas we lost our heads in the second half. It's not totally over but pogba will be a huge miss, gonna need some luck and a perfect performance but win or lose its a marker for next season and where we need to get to

Also, Sanchez is becoming a real headache, we're pretty much duty bound to use him given the investment but if you ignore his reputation you'd struggle to justify even having him in the squad. The board have a big decision to make there because whoever takes over full time won't want his future tied to them, he looks totally shot

We were well in control before our injuries, I think you're deluded if you didn't see that. Kimpembe should have been off, twice. We were unlucky with the injuries and with the referee being totally incompetent.

That being said, Pogba was off from the start, when he started lunging in during the first half, it was obvious the ego-maniac Pogba was back and looking to win individual battles as opposed to the brilliant, world class Pogba we've seen since Ole took over. He was silly and he shouldn't have got himself sent off.

One thing for certain is our lack of depth. Went from being better than them to looking like boys vs men as soon as the injuries hit us... It's a shame but I feel that the tie is over now.

Also how much must Mbappe be worth? Quiet in the first half but they could just step up a couple of gears. Scarily I see City going after him, they are one of the few that could afford him.

We got beat by the better team. Solskjaer said all the right things after the game, we haven't played at this level for a while and it showed with how naive we were at times.

Injuries completely took us out of the tie and the ref had a fecking nightmare and shouldn't manage a game of this magnitude again.

All in all, we're not that far off this. A few quality signings and some more CL football next year and it won't be long before these games are much, much closer.

What? No it isn't?

The rest of your post I agree with though.

Okay, we'll agree to disagree, I'm not saying the whole game United was outclassed, but mainly the second half was a dominant one for PSG and De Gea kept it reasonable.

For all the glamour of CL, The refs are absolutely pathetic. This clown killed any intensity in the game for both teams with 5 yellows in the first 30 mins or so, then failed to give their defender second yellow for a worse foul than other yellows he'd given before. Its not just this match that refs are a joke but the whole CL, I guess you forget that if you haven't been in later stages of CL.

As for this game, it was over after martial and lingard went off as PSG didn't really have to worry about slow mata or sanchez. For people talking about "reality check" Did anyone really think our squad is good enough to be CL Elite? if you did then you definitely need a "reality check".

Hopefully those injuries to lingard and martial aren't bad.

Yeah i dont disagree . PSG were better 2nd half and deserved their win- although helped by some circumstances but they had injuries of their own so can't complain.

Thought the manager was very controlled in the interview. It would have been easy to hang out Sanchez and Mata to dry when he was asked about the impact martial and lingards injuries had. Sanchez and Mata need shipping out and replacing.

I have seen people claim that they saw a goal coming already at half time. What actually made you see this considering the only half decent chance PSG had in the first half was offside Mbappe shot?

Gutted. Totally superior squad, despite Ney and Cavani being out of the picture atm. But still had high hopes for a brave 2-0 and then anything goes in Paris (3-1? 2-1? 2-0 and penalties?).

But no, reality just hit, hard. Losing at OT always hurts, but we should focus on the 4th spot/FA Cup. We were out of the UCL long before this match, thanks to Mou (with him it would have been 0-0 and then 2-0 or 3-1), anyway. What I'm saying is that 18-19 UCL is Mou's (empty, pointless) heritage, and we are past that.

Feel sorry for Ole. This doesn't help his case for "the job".

P.S.: Sánchez MUST go.

I don't agree with the general consensus here that we lost because of the injuries. Even with both Lingard and Martial on the pitch we were bad and created literally nothing. PSG were more dangerous, had more of the ball, had a clear gameplan and yes we caught them offside a few times but they were always a threat just lacked final ball.

True, but ole is working with a Jose and LVG hybrid squad he isn't going to work miracles. I always expected psg to come through this tie, their squad is better than ours with the only exception being de gea and pogba.

Well I agree and I didn't expect us to beat PSG over 2 legs anyway. Will be really interesting to see how we bounce back from this.

One run he made by the touchline in the 1st half, I couldn't believe what I was seeing; he was that fast.

Now I hope and all I care for that Martial and Lingard will be ready for Chelsea and Liverpool. We can't go to these games with Mata and Sanchez. Ole said it was muscles injuries so it needs couple of days to be assessed.

Poor in the second half but the ref made us look much worse than we were. Absolutely disgraceful decision not to send Kimpembe off, he had the whistle in his mouth ffs. Bottled it.
Ref was sucking that whistle like a binky the entire match.

A lot of talk about Young not being good enough but christ if Shaw is our future leftback..

We need to sign two fullbacks and a CB this summer. A CM a right winger and an attacker.

Lukaku, Sánchez, Valencia, Rojo, Bailly, Pereira should be moved and Fred I just dont know what the plan was with him. I think Shaw should be sold as well he offers nothing forward and lacks pace and stamina to bomb up and down. Or at least given some competition. A 34 year old Alves looked fresher than Shaw tonight.

Woodys posistion should be under serious threat for our transfers post Fergie. This club needs its ruthlessness back, way to many freebies since Fergie left.

We needed Fellaini. I know, I know...but at 2-0 we needed better presence in the box. We couldn't break them down.

It was one of the worst games in memory that I've seen from United in Europe at Old Trafford. No player walks away from this match happy with their performance, a few were OK but that's not good enough.

1. The tactic. 4-3-3 with a flat midfield three made it so PSG had an easy time getting around our midfield. Matic isn't mobile enough to press up high and recover and he's not mobile enough to cover for others. Pogba out on the left was a straight nothing when PSG had the ball.

2. The pressing. The difference in teams was massive. Every time a PSG player pressed the ball they finished their pressing. Too many times United started to press and one or more players stopped or didn't do it 100% so PSG got left off the hook. We saw glimpses of good pressing but it needs to be like that for the full 90. Marquinhos and Verratti totally owned the midfield.

3. Plan B. What is it? We had to make two early changes but that's no excuse. Martial was invisible in the first half, Sanchéz and Mata made no difference. Way too often did our attack finish with a high cross which Silva or Redcard had no problems dealing with. Rashford just offers almost no threat when that's our gameplan and so he was invisible in the 2nd half because that's what we resorted to.

4. Pogba. That was absolute crap. As good as he has been under Ole that was equally as bad if that makes sense. He lost his head when he should be leading and taking charge of the team on the pitch. Very dissappointing and him being out of the 2nd leg with us 0-2 down, I give us less than a 5% chance of going through.

5. Sanchéz. It's getting harder and harder defending him. Mourinho, injuries. He just looks so bad and as hopeful as I was about him returning to form I just almost don't see it anymore.

The best thing to do now is to forget about the CL as we've got our two biggest games of the season up next against teams that very much would like to beat us.

In my home, at the TV, with the volume turned up.
So to be clear, you aren’t actually complaining about the atmosphere based on empirical evidence, but you’re perception of the atmosphere based solely on the TV production team’s capturing, mixing and broadcasting of the atmosphere.

Whatever noise you receive via TV is more down to the placement of microphones and sound mixing than any objective representation of the noise produced by various elements of the crowd.

If the sound mix was ever true to what people experience in the stadium, you would never be able to hear the commentators or the managers pitchside.

By all means, lament the atmosphere if you ever any evidence that it was poor, but don’t pretend for a second that the sound mix of the TV broadcast is an accurate representation of what the players would hear.

We never looked like scoring and we never look like a proper unit. Pathetic display whatever way you spin it. Very worrying that if you mark Pogba out of the game you basically nullify most of our creativity.
Martial and Sanchez were exceptionally rubbish.

Good to see some positivity, I know Ole will go for it.

Of course we needed Fellaini in this type of match. We’ve had about 7 or 8 players that should’ve been sold before him.
You need to give teams like PSG something to worry about, hoofing it to Felli worked plenty of times in Europe.
