LC W League Cup Third Round

Manchester United 1:1 Rochdale

Post-match discussion

Wed, 25 September 2019

So glad I'm at work on Monday or I'd be watching the match against Arsenal and tearing my hair out from the torture.

Business is booming, plan installed to rebuild and we are back to winning ways. Great night of football.

Come on Guys Nobody needs this Cup.Even if we loose it will be soon forgotten.

Get rid of Lukaku and Sanchez they said. It'll be fine they said.
Both completely correct decisions. Neither were right for us. The mistake was not having a replacement for Lukaku lined up.

Sanchez is a complete nothing player. He's lost it.

Can we trade their 16 year old with Jones? At least he can last a whole game.
I would play Williams before Young on monday after that debut, Thought he showed great composure for his age and his overlapping was not bad either.

His overlapping runs were great. My only problem was that he seemed to be right footed which is no help on those runs. He did put in one left footed cross though but usually his overlaps were either decoy runs or he cut back to pass. He looked good though...

The most concerning thing is that it's not like we have players who rested today and are going to come in on Monday and make a drastic difference. Greenwood did well and will probably be replaced by Rashford. Martial may not be back by then. With the exception of Maguire for Rojo, this was very close to a full strength squad.

Greenwood is Lukaku's replacement, and from what I've seen so far, he might not only be replacing Lukaku, he could very well be a first 11 regular very soon...

For those saying we have had these sort of performances under Fergie in the LC, yes we have but there's a massive difference. No-one is really surprised that we struggled against Rochdale. Secondly, we have come into it on a bad run of form and it was a chance to gain confidence and look good going forward/ keep a clean sheet but again we struggled and drew the game.

Finally, our squad is that small that we need these players to perform during the season if we are to get top 4/6. This was a chance for a few players to try and impress the manager but they couldn't do it against a League 1 side. It's very worrying.

I don't want to sound kneejerk, but all the excitement and optimism has gone from this season already. Many were worried about the lack of depth and quality and was hoping the kids would make an impression. Let's be honest, Greenwood is the only one who's going to feature properly this season out of the academy graduates, and he's 17. The best we can hope for is that Tottenham continue to self implode, Chelsea struggle with the kids and Arsenal be Arsenal, and we somehow manage to sneak top 4.

It's bizarre how we went from Dybala, to Llorente, and then to no one.

Embarrassing to say the least.

I’m fed up of watching deadwood every week we need to get rid of average players and until we do that we’ve got no chance..
Here’s my list of players who I think are finished or will never make it at Man United.

Jones
Rojo
Fred
Young
Fred
Mctominay
Andreas Pereira
Mata (good for Chelsea - past it now)
Matic
Shaw
Rashford
LINGARD

We may as well face it that until we get rid of these frauds we are basically going to be fighting for 6-8th place every year

Those making out like everyone with negative comments are overreacting are massively swerving just how predictable this was.

He scored in all matches that he has started so far
Against Astana and Rochdale.

Wait until he starts couple of games against top opposition and everyone would be on his back that he's useless like Chong.

Another game where we only score 1 goal. The manager is a complete donkey.

You have to feel for the match-going fans in a lots of ways. Pretty obvious why many just didn't bother turning up today.

Attendance: 58,313

Still must have been the biggest ever crowd to watch Rochdale, exceeding 40,223 in 1986.

I enjoyed watching today's match.

My expectations have been lowered obviously but the kids got some senior minutes and had some decent play. Greenwood, Tuanzebe and Williams were all positives.

I still think that IF we get Martial, Rashford and Shaw back fit in a few weeks and the likes of Greenwood and Tuanzebe continue their progress then we'll still be in the top four chase and alive in a cup or two come January.

I really want to see a midfield three of McTominay/Fred/Pogba behind James/Greenwood/Martial for a few matches sooner than later.

All to play for.

Because he scored against Astana and Rochdale?

Because he has been the best or one of the best players on the field every single time he has played for United whether that was last year on the last game of the season, this year in preseason, and yes, against Astana and Rochdale. Was anyone else able to create as many scoring chances as he did? Today alone he had 7 shots and 4 on target. As they say, you can only play who is in front of you, and when he has played he has more than earned the shout for player of the match...

Yup same here. We played quite well and could have ended up with hand full of goals. Their keeper being decent and our finishing being horrible contributed to low score line.

I didn't think it was as bad as some are making out, I'm not sure what people are expecting from this squad, we are fielding half an under 23 side and relying on a 17 year old striker.

Fred and Pogba were clearly told to try and give us more tempo and get the ball forward quickly, which led to them forcing it and a number of misplaced passes, but it was the right idea for me and we did create some chances.

it wasn't great but I think we have to be real about how poor this squad is and look for the positives which were a couple of decent performances from 2 of our best young players, that'll do for tonight.

What I took from that, strangely, was feeling happy for that 16 year old right back. Got away with a sneaky pull on Pogba right at the end, but really had a great game.

This mainly just confirmed some things. Pereira is physically weak on the ball, Fred is a bit of a nothing player, and Jones is consistent in his bad decision making (always gambles). Also Chong looks completely shot of confidence and Pogba played at 20%.

This team doesn't want it.

We were playing Rochdale.

We were playing Rochdale.

I know, and we had half a team of kids and two dead food defenders that have spent best part of the last 18 months injured and who we can't get rid of, we had a 17 year old striker and 19 year old winger with about 7 or 8 senior appearences between them, we are under massive pressure from our fanbase and the media, Rochdale came to Old Trafford for their cup final with nothing to lose, to say "It's Rochdale" ignores the context of what is going on in total at our club right now and people finally waking up to the fact we had a shite transfer window.

We have yet again only managed a single goal. The players we put out are FAR better than what is on the other side regardless of how you try to spin it.

Our u21s beat Rotherham 2-0 without Greenwood, and Rotherham are also 2 points ahead of Rochdale.

Are they? Lingard and Pereira are not good enough and the other attackers are kids, Rojo and Jones are gash, I'm not trying to spin anything, why would I? If they sacked Ole tomorrow I wouldn't miss a beat, I thought giving him the job when we said we wouldn't appoint a manager until after the season was amateur hour, it was childlike to give him the job because he had a good start, he has zero resume' to speak of, but the bottom line is right now all we can do is knuckle down and hope things get better and these young players get a lot of game time, so for me Axel and Greenwood doing well will do for me for now as I knew before the season started we'd struggle to get top 6 never mind top 4.

Yes they are. If you are trying to say that team we put out was league 1 level you've got to be kidding me.

Our U21's are a team that are used to playing together and are not under the pressure this senior side is right now, you can feel the tension at Old Trafford through the TV screen, that's not a great environment for young players and the senior ones are a waste of time in large, the context of the situation needs to be taken into account.

I think there is a lot more involved than how simple you are trying to make it, Pereira, Chong, Axel and Greenwood have yet to establish they are PL level, or what exactly their level is, Jones and Rojo are useles and have barely any match sharpness as they have hardly played any football recently. You also have to take into account the atmosphere around the club right now and inside Old Trafford, and the fact it's a team game, we slung a bunch of players out there tonight that have barely played together and then people expect cohesion, it's over the top IMO. I imagine that was Rochdale's regular 11 tonight, they play together every week, they had no pressure on them, there are a lot of factors.
