Rio Ferdinand

Rio was magnificent yet again today. He really is playing at his best this season. I cannot fathom how people put Evans ahead of Rio in the motm thread. For me, the outstanding players tonight were DDG, Rio and Carrick. All of them bossed their element. That block Rio managed to pull in front of Ronaldo was magic - he's not as slow as many would make out. What impresses me is his backs to the wall defending this season, which I never considered his strongest side, but he's been brilliant at it.

For whatever the reasons, it's a bit frightening that Cahill plays infront of him with the English National Team.

Good game from him tonight. Both him and Evans are so calm on the ball even surrounded by madrid players. Seems to always be able to turn his way out of trouble, even if he does give a few heart attacks in the process.

He was taking the piss at times, leaving their forwards with little turns. The guy is a legend of center backs.

It's astounding that he's still playing at this level despite his injury problems and general decline in pace. Still looks like the best defender on the planet when he's on form.

He's always absolutely amazing in the big games, never lets us down. Still our most important defender when we really need someone to step up.

Still is the best defender on the planet when he's on form. As Tomus said, at times he's just taking the piss.

Taking the piss is the right expression, made my heart miss a beat a couple of times with his twists and turns, but he's so comfortable on the ball that he manages it. Masterclass of defending last night, didn't set a foot wrong and marshalled the defence throughout. If we make it through to the quarters, he and De Gea will be the big reasons we did well in this leg.

Absolute beast of a defender when on form. Don't even want to talk about the England NT, it'll just get me annoyed.

Wouldn't swap him for any defender in the world(ignoring his years of course). Still world class, I am yet to see better defender in europe this year in big games.

This man is still England's best centre-half. Quite easily too. If he were Italian he would still be national team captain with plenty of miles left on the clock. I wouldn't even mind seeing him do a year in Italy if he leaves us this summer. I could see Milan being interested, and would love for him to show what he can do there.

He's a player who relishes these occasions and why he will go down as one of the best CBs United have ever had. Concentration was top notch.

Pleased regarding the England snub, hopefully that's it now, I have a feeling they will come with their tail between their legs and Rio will go back but I hope I'm wrong as he doesn't need that hassle.

He has managed his injury problems very well over the last couple of seasons, especially with Vidic also out for so long. His performances this year have been brilliant. With him losing pace, he is using his intelligence and positioning to defend so well.

The media will make sure he faces a ban for that off-the-ball incident with Torres I think.

The media has every right to. It was bafflingly stupid and smalltime from someone of his experience.

And on Torres too. The ultimate waste.

Even so, he was never going to play every match anyway so a ban makes little difference as long as we don't get a sudden injury crisis.

It was stupid though Antisocial. You cannot do that and expect to get away with it. Had it been a Chelsea player on one of ours we'd be up in arms over it.

Surprises me given his experience

I still hope it was accidential, but I'm probably lying to myself, since I didn't expect that from Rio. He was great btw.

One of the sadder elements of the incident is that Torres doesn't even care. He's so depressed he just takes it.

Tragic.

Well, he does. It was stupid, childish and beneath him.

If an opposing player did that to one of ours, you bet we'd be expecting a ban.

Ref didn't see it, so he'll be out for a game or two.

And he should be.

Great performance, not sure what he was thinking with that kick at Torres. At least do it to Hazard or someone else remotely dangerous.

What can the FA actually do with that incident? I fully agree that it was stupid and he deserves some sort of punishment, but I don't really see what. As I see it, it's not violent conduct (I don't see a "kick", I just see Rio running into Torres and using his leg to trip him) and if the ref had seen it I doubt he would've given more than a yellow, so based on that I'm guessing the FA can't actually ban him? So is he looking at a fine or a warning then?

Either way, even if he does get a one of two match ban it's most likely not really going to matter. We have no midweek games coming up, so Vidic can play the next few games.
