Rio Ferdinand

Are people serious that would have been a red? Not a chance.

The way I look at it, had the referee and other players seen it, it would have at least been a yellow card and an unwanted brawl bringing an unnecessary element into the game.

Stupid behavior

I don't know if he meant it or not. But I was certainly not impressed with him clapping the ref on Tues no matter how upset you are. A senior player for Man United should conduct himself better. Take a leaf out of Rugby Union players. In the Wales Scotland match, after getting a talking to the players responded with " Thankyou Sir" and it wasn't sarcastic.

I think he meant it....

It was stupid though Antisocial. You cannot do that and expect to get away with it. Had it been a Chelsea player on one of ours we'd be up in arms over it.

Surprises me given his experience

Well, he does. It was stupid, childish and beneath him.

If an opposing player did that to one of ours, you bet we'd be expecting a ban.

Ref didn't see it, so he'll be out for a game or two.

And he should be.

I'm not arguing that he doesn't deserve all he gets for that, I'm just expecting the media to go to town on him - probably justifiably so but it still gets so tiresome when the media get on their high-horse.

Course he meant it... it's never ever going to be a red card though. Bit of hyperbole there I think.

Oh come on, it's a little trip... he's hardly gone and full-on kicked him or punched him or anything.

If the referee see's it, he books Rio and gives Chelsea a free-kick, and that would be that.

It really is a nothing incident. It was daft and he shouldn't have done it and it'll be blown out of proportion by the media now but he barely touched him.

Well, the Daily Mail have an article on it with the headline...

''More trouble for Rio! Ferdinand kicks then shoves Torres in the head... days after sarcastic clapping of Turkish official''

So that'll be a ban.

Please.

It was always going to be a ban, regardless of what the media does.

It's really not going to be a ban. For it to be a ban, it would have to be a red card offence, and it quite plainly isn't.

I thought it was funny, with that and the sarcastic applause the referee got vs. Madrid, Rio's had a stupid and hilarious week.

Plus Torres is a wanker, remember he scuffed the penalty spot when the referee had his back to him moments before Shrek had to take a penalty against Chelsea a few years back?

I'd also argue that Rio is a bit of a wanker - sarcastic referee clapping, needless off the ball niggles, thinking the "choc ice" tweet was hilarious, steward kicking, hawking shit ill-fitting baseball caps with his shirt number on etc..

That aside, he had a good game today.

Totally missed that last night. Stupid thing to do by Rio there. It's clear that it is intentional as well.

Other than that bit of stupidity, I thought Rio played very well.

He's had an excellent season for us and his passion for the club and success is something hopefully our younger players will pick up from him, as he seems quite influential amongst them.

The Torres thing today was stupid, if we lived in sane footballing times it's a nothing incident, but these days due to the media multi-angling every little thing and spending blocks of TV time over-analyzing every time a player picks hisd nose, there could well be some stupid punishment that deprives the team of an important player for a couple of games.

nothing incident

Anyone getting all Daily mail reader mock affronted should go and support Stoke.

Check how much off the ball sh1t they get involved in. Proper nasty stuff too.

I'm inclined to say it wasn't a red card incident, however, it can be seen as one due to the 'cynical nature' of it and the fact that it was off the ball. It can been seen as inciting so it wouldn't surprise me if he gets a ban.

He's been a right idiot the last 2 games. Great performances from him vs Real and Chelsea but such behaviour from a senior player should not be condoned and regardless of what the FA does I hope the club (Fergie) puts him in his place and disciplines him.

It was against the red filth of Merseyside. As for Rio him clapping his hands in the face of that ref don´t bother me. I prefer that to Rooney going around smiling and hugging people like we won the match

Martin Lipton @MartinLipton
Alan Wiley view on Ferdinand/Torres not binding. But a signal that he expects Webb to say "yellow card" - and no ban

...

Stupid thing to do and if he does get a ban he deserves it. If that was Suarez or Terry we all would have been over it like a rash. In this day and age with so many watching eyes you simply cannot retaliate.

It's clear that Torres punched him also at the start of the video, but still I didn't expect this from Rio.

Push on the top of the back/shoulder with a leg placed to trip him up. It's a yellow at worst and not this "violent assault" that some places are making it out to be.

What it definitely is is unnecessary and a bit childish.

What it definitely is is a clear red for any opposition player doing it against us in the eyes of all the red tinted fans trying to dismiss it as nothing.

However much you think it may be handbags, we'd all be arguing malicious intent till the cows come home if Terry or Suarez or someone had done that to Rio.

It was an incredibly stupid thing to do.

It's as much of a red as Terry's knee incident against Barcelona last season in my opinion. Both similar situations and both warrant a red.

You could argue a knee to the back is a little more dangerous than what Rio did, but lets be honest neither incidents are going to cause any harm.

Greatest crime was making it obvious. Suarez gets away with it week in week out.

Should get a ban though, silly boy.

Thought he was a bit of a cnut to do that to be honest, I like Rio but that was just needless and cowardly. Yellow card at the most but still it was a stupid thing to do, fair play to Torres for getting up (dragged up..) and just getting on with it.

I mean could you imagine if Suarez had done that, he'd probably have 10 new pages of hate messages in his thread by now.

Not exactly out of character for him, is it?

He seems to largely fly under the radar for all the cnutish things he has got up to in his career.
