I think the age thing is the single biggest factor for both parties. England need to throw in their lot with Smalling et al. Rio needs to focus on extending his club career by as much as possible. Its a no brainer really.
I thought it was well established that he was much better defender than terry.
I will be very surprised, anyway I personally don't even have a doubt that Rio was the better defender. I don't care about their opinion tbh but if that is true then I am really surprised.
Yes yes, which is why the likes of Maldini and Nesta don't get as much recognition in England as they should, if only they put in a few more slide tackles..sorry mate, it's always a peeve of mine when someone suggests most supporters don't know about the subtler aspects of defending
Though I read somewhere that Giggs hasnt run at full pelt since his mid 20s as he was told it was the reason he was having such problems with his hamstrings. So that isnt really a fair contest.
Most English supporters, including Scandinavians, rarely watched Nesta and Maldini play outside the Euros or World Cups, and thus their recognition mostly stems from reports and media acclaim, not by actualy viewing.
Do you not think that Rio would get more recognition had he been a more fierce tackler ala Terry?
Yeah, but most supporters go for the spectacular. If Rio has made a slide tackle to knock the ball away from Suarez then everyone would be drooling. But when he stands his ground and just steals the ball from Suarez ever so casually then gently passes the ball to a team mate, no one notice.
Wasn't that bad. Left woefully exposed by the midfield. Could've have done better, especially against Defoe out wide, but 2/10 is ridiculous.
GOAL- Man Utd 0-1 Tottenham - Jan Vertonghen (2 mins)
90 seconds played, Manchester United haven't touched the ball and Tottenham lead. Defender Jan Vertonghen bursts into the United box and fires a low shot that deflects in off Jonny Evans. It was poor defending from the home side, particularly Rio Ferdinand, who pretty much stood and watched as Vertonghen passed by.
GOAL- Man Utd 0-2 Tottenham - Gareth Bale (32 mins)
What about this then? Tottenham are usually lambs to the slaughter at Old Trafford but they're the butchers so far today. Christian... sorry Gareth Bale collects a pass from Moussa Dembele just inside the Manchester United half and tears away from Rio Ferdinand and into the box before slotting a shot across Anders Lindegaard and in. Batman would have been proud of that.
GOAL- Man Utd 1-3 Tottenham - Clint Dempsey (52 mins)
Nerves? Not a chance. Tottenham hit back straight away as Jermain Defoe skips away past Rio Ferdinand and feeds the ball in to Gareth Bale in the box. His shot is palmed out by Anders Lindegaard but straight to Clint Dempsey, who slots in to the empty net. Rio is having a bit of a shocker. And Tottenham are buoyant again.
A fabulous defender left terribly exposed by his midfield, there's nothing worse as a CB than having people run at you from deep areas with pace.
How many CB wouldnt have been done by Bale for pace?

You're only as good as your last game I guess.
Even Vidic is getting on now.
Remember Craig Bellemy skinned Rio alive in the Liverpool game ages ago so its hardly a surprise to see Bale doing it now. Rio is going the way of Carragher sadly and it happens to them all. Good thing is he's given us years of top service and still can be used when needed, plus we have Smalling and Jones etc to do on with. I think our days of Evra, Vidic, Rio + whoever are over to be honest. This season and last is proving that. Even Vidic is getting on now.
might as well take him out into a field and shoot him now then
For me, Rio is still one of the best in the game when fit. Paul McGrath and Ledley King both proved that you can still be awesome by reading of the game.
Rio had a bad game, which incidentally follwed a match where he was probably MOTM
tbh i disagree that his pace has completely gone. Hes just not going to match the likes of Bale

Agreed but Rio always relied on his pace to get him out of sticky situations and now it's only his positional awareness he has left. He has never been great in the air and doesn't really have a physical presence, but I still rate him as one of the best in PL.
