Rio Ferdinand

I am half expecting him to either retire or move on at the End of the season for 1/2 seasons in USA or something like that.

He said in november that he will take a call on extending his contract at Christmas time or the season's end and also on whether to continue playing or not. Sir Alex also said this month that he needs to do Yoga with his back problem, but that he was not panicking about his contract expiring in the summer.

"Morning..you had a top game the other day didn't you..for an old fart"! That was the chat with the lady cashier while paying for my petrol! Made me chuckle! She 'old farted' me off without even looking up from jabbing the numbers in the till!! Raw like sushi!!

Classic.

Sir Alex says Ferdinand is having a "great season" & doesn't see any reason why he won't sign a new contract believing it's a formality....

Encouraging news in my view, some of his performances (particularly in big games) have been pure class.

He's still a top class defender on his day, there's no doubt about that. The likes of Smalling, Jones and Evans should be absorbing everything they can from Rio right now, as he won't be around forever.

Talking about Maldini some year ago, Rio said he wouldn't like to play over 33-34 yr old

Yeah, i don't see him carrying on like Scholes/Giggs despite what Sir Alex says.

He would probably not mind a season or 2 in a lower intensity league somewhere too. Anton is going to Turkey IIRC.

It will be interesting to see how the old combo of Vidic-Rio goes over the remainder of the season. I wonder how much its declined from the 06-09 years where it was arguably the best centre back pairing in Europe. Obviously Rio's lost some pace and isn't the player he once was. Is he still first choice if fit? The Evans-Rio combo doesn't fill me with confidence and I tend to think that our best pairing now is probably Vidic-Evans or Vidic-Smalling.

Yeah, Rio has made some uncharacteristic errors this season. He has good overall games but makes 1/2 errors.

Evans/Vida probably our strongest pairing now for mine. Though, Rio can be brilliant still on his day.

Nah.. Two centreback lacking in pace is a recipe of disaster.. Smallish has to be an integral part of our centreback partnerhsi

Agreed, but then Evans has shown recently that he has worked on his pace - not every defender can go bragging about outpacing Kone!

How many CB pairings in the PL have pace, or in the world for that matter? Pique is ridiculously slow, much more so than Evans, and Puyol isn't speedy either.

Smalling is very fast and Jones if fast too. I want to see Smalling paired with Vidic more, but Rio and Vidic looked good, so we'll have to wait and see.

Rio Ferdinand is keen to extend his stay with league leaders Manchester United and is unfazed by a lack of contract negotiations.

The 34-year-old, who arrived at Old Trafford over a decade ago from Leeds United, is remaining patient over a new contract despite his current deal expiring this summer.

Ferdinand said: "Of course I would want to stay, 100 per cent, provided I'm still playing like I am and feeling as good as I am at the moment.

"Manchester United is a great club, the number one, and you would never want to play anywhere else if you can still play for them.

Rio FerdinandQuotes of the week

"I want to be able to contribute properly and to be a player they actually need. You can tell if you're not really needed at a club any more. You just know.

"We are not in discussions about a new contract at the moment and I'm fine with that because of the understanding I have with the manager.

"I don't expect to be treated any different to the other older players like Giggsy or Scholesy, who normally sign on again at the end of the season."

The two weeks rest did him a lot of good. Fergie does it amazing with the older players keeping them fresh for the important games.

Footballing reasons eh, Roy?

Good game from him bar a few times he lost the ball cheaply

Yeah, that and the first header lost on every corner second half along with Evans.

Sometimes Rio and Evans are too similar.

This is why England will never be good. Missing out on class like Rio Ferdinand. Chumps.

He's been a bit Rio 07/08 at times this year with some of his performances. Without the pace but with the same sort of impregnability. Not that he's played like that every time, but he's had games whereby he's just been completely dominant. Last year him and Evans were more often very solid/dependable but at his best I think he's looked better this year. Amazing for a 34 year old who has been so used to being faster than the vast majority of players he's come up against throughout his career.

Still a top defender. Rumours of his demise have been greatly exaggerated!

Would be a disaster if England re-called him for whatever reason now. He served them well, and when we're careful about his games as it is, it'd be ridiculous for him being dragged away for extras.

The situation with Vidic will be interesting.
Is this a temporary nurturing of him? Or will this be the pattern for the foreseeable?

It was quite a commanding performance from Ferdinand today. I always feel confident about our chances when he’s part of our defensive lineup. I sure wish Rio maintains his current fitness so that we’ll be able to see him feature in the more difficult matches that still lie ahead this season.

Probably my favourite post-1990s United player. His contract stand-off/flirtation with Chelsea circa. 2005 turned some United fans against him, but for me, he's been an incredible player for us. I actually rate him higher than Vidic in United 'legacy' terms and I'll be sad to see the back of him when he eventually leaves/retires.

A United legend in my eyes, no doubt. His performances against Liverpool, especially at Anfield, have been my Ferdinand highlights. For some reason, he usually reserved his best for the auld enemy. His complete shut-out of Torres in the 2008 game at Anfield (when Torres was at his most fearsome) was one of the best defensive performances by anyone, not just at United.

Still the best English centre-half, and comfortably so
Think he's been magnificent so far this calendar year, albeit a month old

Seeing him in starting line-up always makes me calm about the defence and match ahead no matter who we play against.

By far best defender I've ever seen in United shirt.

He and Evans played really well today, but the part where he read the ball into the striker then knicked it, then proceeded to over run it and lose it to the midfielder, causing them to counter attack us nearly gave me a heart attack.

Hes got to remember hes not 24 anymore!, must deal with the ball quicker.

He can be an incredible player also a twat at the same time.

Why bring in his shite with Chelsea with his actual input for the club?

For me, pretty much unforgivable but so important and so good I choose to live with it.

We don't know much about this so called flirtation with Chelsea, it may have been absolutely nothing

A few weeks ago he said in an interview he had nothing to do with a photo taken with him and Kenyon back then, and that it really was a coincidence - on his part, anyway.

As I said, other supporters held, and still do, it against him when he was looking for a better contract. The same way some United fans still haven't jumped back into bed with Rooney after his antics two years ago.

A review of both of their careers here will be mainly positive, but there's still that dark chapter that both contributed to.

So Hodgson has made it clear Rio won't play for England anymore.

Thoughts?

I'm not quite sure what to make of it. There's two major positives for me: no international duties for Rio, and the fact that a younger generation of CBs (including Smalling and Jones) will get a look in. Which is nice. But I can't help to feel he's been very unlucky these last few years with his international career, and that he's not quite rated has highly as he should.

Shame for Rio as I know he still wants to help the team, but United is far more important and he's at that stage in his career where he needs to be selective about when he plays and when he rests.

I'm glad Hodgson has put this to bed.

Makes sense in a way tbh. He'll be 36 come the next world cup and is not guaranteed to be at United next season.

He's had issues with his back, and in a major tournament there will be doubts about him playing back to back games.
