Shinji Kagawa | Signs for Manchester United

Only on the Caf can an argument about Chelsea's formation after signing Hazard break out in a thread where a star is about to sign for United.

Star? A second rate Japanese no-hoper from a shite league whom other big clubs wouldn't touch with a barge pole. I believe Dortmund didn't even want to extend his contract after they realized Real Madrid weren't after him.

You're so out of touch sometimes, Hectic.

I can see where you're coming from but surely the simplest chant would be (to the tune of "Edwin Van der Sar")

Shinji! Kagawa!
Shinji, Shinji Kagawa!

Or

(to the tune "Ooh aah Cantona")

What a friend we have in Jesus
Midfield saviour from afar
What a friend we have in Jesus
And his name is Shinji Ka-ga-wa
OOH AAH KA-GA-WA;
OOH AAH KA-GA-WA;
OOH AAH; OOH AAH;
OOH AAH; KA-GA-WA
OOH AAH; KA-GA-WA...
UNITED
UNITED
UNITED

Some part of me feels dirty changing the words to Eric's song...

...I need to give this some thought

Your's is a much better chant. Mine is sublime poetry :nervous:

Ah, is pocco going all "doom & gloom" again, I'm confused but this seems the most likely possibility.

Does pocco think Kagawa isn't that good?

That isn't the case, I assure you. The problem is you raise one concern and people jump all over it, you then get forced into some stupid argument over it and it looks like you just don't rate the player. You get so caught up in defending youself if you criticise that you don't get chance to say anything else.

I must admit, my first comment in here tonight was just to add fuel to charlenefan's fire. It's quite amusing watching muppets like that KM guy getting up in arms about it all.

I'd be delighted if this transfer goes through. One of the biggest weaknesses in our squad is the lack of an alternative (hopefully improvement) to Rooney in the 10 role. I don't think it's at all unrealistic to suggest that Kagawa could well be more effective for the TEAM in that role than Rooney.

A new left back and an alternative option/improvement on Carrick and we'll be laughing.

Agreed.

Another top class proper centre midfielder of any any ilk would be more than enough to make it a great summer.

Shin-ji Ka-ga-wa

Shin-ji Ka-ga-wa
Comes from Ja-pan

to the tune of the chorus of Hava Nagila, speeding up each repetition

(may offend Jews)

All those little flicks and stuff

Looks like he's be amazing in a front-4 with the likes of Welbeck, Rooney and Nani. Think of the link-up play!

Wow, not only does he look rather brilliant but he also has a YouTube montage with music that doesn't make me want to stick a screwdriver in my ears? I'm sold, SK#7

Edit: Not so much the second one

Better still, Imagine Nani/Young/Valencia latching onto them balls on a typical counter from us! He appears to have a nice tempo about him, something we have lacked, sluggish in midfield. Plus from reports and articles on him, he just enjoys playing football. good attitude.

Looking at those vids, and I know the perils of taking Youtube as gospel, the one contemporary Premiership player he reminds me of is that Spanish midget who plays down the road... Though obviously, he's not quite as refined.

He actually reminds me a lot of a young Pablo Aimar with that passing range, the dribbling and the tricks and flicks. Looks to have a bit more pace to him than Aimar did though.

edit - needs to add some long-range screamers to his game though ;)

Him, Welbeck and Nani in one team would just be taking the piss. The little passing triangles between them would be a delightful little proposition for us... Now the only missing piece of the jigsaw, vis-a-vis attack, is a longterm replacement for Giggs. Muppet dream is James Rodriguez, but he's as likely to come as Fergie is taking up Feng Shuai :(

I actually thought Kagawa himself was a bit of a replacement for Giggs, Scholes is the guy I think needs replacing now!

This. Kagawa can fulfill the role that Giggs has been doing for the last 5+ seasons.

And given that age has caught up with the master, it'll be a massive upgrade for us.

When is he done with Japan? Really want this one done and dusted.

The thing that I find most impressive, is his timing of his passes. He seems to release the ball at the right time, and doesn't rush or spend to much time. In that videos, when a through ball is on he releases it just as the forward is in the most amount of space. Classy.

Whats interesting is that Dortmund plucked him out of a 2nd division team in Japan/ How come their japanese J-League own scouts didnt spot him?

Can it be that they like non-flamboyant players or those who conform to a more bland style, team first? The nail that sticks up gets hammered down mentality?

IMO, he's about van der Vaart level, probably slightly worse than the latter. At the same age (23) VDV was a bigger star in the Bundesliga. He could progress in his development better than VDV though, who knows. Personally, I'm not sure that he could improve our attacking play significantly. Would be a very good option to have though.

He could single handedly resurrect the Viva Ronaldo style chant:

Shinji Kagawa
Shinji Kagawa
Watch him pull the strings
While United sings
Shinji Kagawa

Shinji Kagawa
Shinji Kagawa
He's not midfield steel
But it's a real good deal
Shinji Kagawa

Shinji Kagawa
Shinji Kagawa
Buy/Sell ratios?
feck off Ronaldo!
Shinji Kagawa

Shinji Kagawa
Shinji Kagawa
He comes from Japan
And he'll bang yer mam
Shinji Kagawa

His assists and passes.

Part 1:

I bet Hazard doesn't have a video as good as that.Yet there is not the same excitement among United fans, may be because he is Asian.

Also when I saw him in a few games for Dortmund, he didn't stand out for me because he wasn't that continuously involved and was missing for large parts.
No doubt he is supremely talented but only regular viewers would be able to tell if he doesn't go missing in most game.

Anyways i am excited about this signing because there is no doubt about the talent.

Shinji Kagawa will claim the inaugural Bundesliga Football Player of the Year award after winning a majority of the votes as selected by our readers and listeners.

It’s been quite a season for the Japanese international The midfielder has been an important cog in the Borussia Dortmund machine and his value to the club has been emphasised by a £20 million price tag being put on his head as some of Europe’s top sides compete for his signature.

It’s easy to forget that a mere two years ago, Kagawa was playing for Cerezo Osaka in the Japanese second division. The leap from the second tier in Japanese football to the Bundesliga can’t be taken lightly, it says a lot about the Japanese star though that his talent, as well as his character, were more than comfortable with the switch.

Sluggish Start

The start of the 2011/12 campaign saw Kagawa put to bed any fitness doubts relating to the broken foot he suffered the previous season, as he started the opening match against Hamburg.

The early form of the Japanese midfielder drew criticism from various quarters, including in his homeland, and it wouldn’t be until the sixth game of the season that he netted his first goal in an away defeat at Hannover. Dortmund’s poor start to the campaign mirrored Kagawa’s below par form and with two wins in six matches they looked to be in trouble.

After the fixture against Mainz on the 24th September, which was the first victory in an unbeaten run lasting the rest of the season, Jurgen Klopp took the decision to rest the playmaker for a couple of games, as he tinkered with his line-up. Kagawa returned against FC Köln and made an immediate impact scoring after just seven minutes in a resounding victory. Although only scoring once, his overall performance was a marked improvement than in previous outings and so began a rich vein of form for the player.

The first 15 games of the season saw Kagawa score four goals and provide four assists. One of the highlights was away to Wolfsburg in November, a man of the match performance saw the playmaker score once as well as lay on strikes for Götze and Lewandowski in a five-goal drubbing.

Rückrunde Revelation

An injury to Mario Götze at the start of the Rückrunde, effectively ruling him out for the rest of the season, meant one of Dortmund’s main creative influences was missing. Kagawa took the opportunity in his stride, becoming the talisman for the team, and the second half of the season highlighted his influence on the defending champions and their dependence on him when it mattered.

Match-winning strikes against Bayer Leverkusen and Werder Bremen along with a dazzling display and late winner against Mainz, showcased Kagawa at his brilliant best. The 14 appearances in the Rückrunde heralded nine goals and six assists but more importantly, his link up play with his team-mates improved as Kagawa struck up an understanding on the pitch with Lewandoski, showing a more selfless approach in his play.

The big games brought out the best in Kagawa and no more so than in the DFB cup final. The Japanese international scored within the first three minutes and also provided an assist for Lewandoski for the crucial third goal. The win confirmed Dortmund as domestic double winners for the first time in their history.

Stats for the season:

Screen-shot-2012-05-29-at-10.54.29.png

Kagawa’s overall stats for the season make for impressive reading. The midfielder found the back of the net 13 times in the Bundesliga and had eleven assists to his name. His form in cup competition was just as notable with four goals and two assists in 11 European and DFB cup matches.

The only disappointing factor for the ‘Samurai Blue’ star was Dortmund’s poor showing in the Champions League. A goal against Arsenal at the Emirates was a personal highlight but as Dortmund finished bottom of their group, he will look on it as an opportunity missed.

Why did Ronaldo have to feck off in the middle ?

I'm going to do the usual R2D2 routine here -

Our main attacking formation next season might look something like this -

------------------------Welbeck--------------------------

--Kagawa---------------Rooney-------------Nani-------

---------------Carrick--------Scholes------------------

With option 2 being

---------------------Rooney--------------------

--Young-----------Kagawa------------Valencia--

-----------Cleverly---------new CM-----------

All these formations look pretty awesome and stuff but it really gets ugly with the injuries, and you look at the team line up with Park and Giggs in CM :(. Hope that doesn't happen next season.

I'd like to see both these formations at one point:

Young Rooney Nani
Anderson Kagawa
Cleverley

and

Kagawa Rooney Nani
Anderson Cleverley
Carrick

You may be on to something here. His scoring and assist stats are great but his pass, tackling and crossing success don't make good reading. Indicates a flashy, effective but often wasteful player, which is probably not far from VdV.

The upside in my eyes is that VDV at 21 was the Ajax captain and as hyped as Hazard if not more so, while Kagawa was playing in the Japanese second division. If you extrapolate that trajectory, while VDV never got much better, this guy is clearly improving at an astonishing rate.

The difference is application, discipline and hard work, and everything (his background/culture, the way he has gone about this whole thing, etc.) indicates that can be expected of him.

I will happily wait to see the player everyone seems to be expecting while having VdV in the meantime. Not bad at all.
