Sir Ryan Giggs

Just me that feels the "scored every season" record is utterly meaningless? It is entirely coincidental to more important records like appearances. Any half decent attacker can claim to managed at least one goal in every season he's played.
Well yeh, it means nothing. Most stats mean nothing, trophies are what matters to players at the top level. But it's just a sign that shows how he has maintained his standards over such a long period of time.

You have to admit, it's an amazing record, and he adds to it every year.

It seems meaningless now but wait until he's no longer around to add to it. It won't be long until you grow weary of commentators repeating this is the first season in the Premier League that Ryan Giggs hasn't scored and wish he was still around to add to what is a pretty remarkable feat.

Yeah I'd agree with this. It is a meaningless stat of course but his career coincided with the beginning of the Premier League. He''s not only scored in each of the seasons he's played in (which I'm sure many attackers can claim) he's scored in every season since this league's inception and he must be close to the all-time record for scoring in consecutive seasons?

The record also reflects that he's managed to maintain his level so consistently. Most players would have had the odd season either towards the beginning or end of their careers in which they weren't selected much, and most would also have missed out for a season or two due to injury.

Yes it's closely related to his other records but that doesn't make it any the less incredible.

Why is it meaningless?
He's the only player to have done it and still doing it...give him some credit !
It's an amazing feat.

Exactly, sounded to me just like another excuse to run Giggs down which is the in-vogue thing to do around here at the moment. Total legend and that stat deserves the recognition it gets. The fact that the past few seasons he's made fewer EPL appearances and not played in an attacking role makes it noteworthy that he's still scoring at least a couple a year. Brilliant achievement.

I don't think that's fair or true. Yes a lot of people probably feel that his level is finally dropping, and probably wouldn't pick him in a starting XI for most games. But people who would in any way slag him off as a player or diminish his status as a club legend are few and far between.

Well said, VDG :)

So, I've been trying to research it - can't find anything definitive yet, Googling brings up a lot of stuff about Giggs, but nothing I've seen that confirms it's a record.

However...

Stanley Matthews played 24 consecutive top-flight seasons but failed to score in 9 of them. We'll let hm off 39-40 and 45-46, but it still gives an idea of how incredible Giggs' record actually is.

Any other shouts for players who may have the record?

Excellent interview in The Telegraph: http://www.telegraph.co.uk/sport/fo...repares-for-Cardiff-return-ahead-of-40th.html

 at this bit:

“This Sheffield United right-back was kicking me in one game, giving me a few verbals and it affected me a little bit. I said to Robbo: ‘That right-back’s just said he’s going to break my legs.’ Robbo said: ‘Did he? You come and play centre-midfield. I’m going to play left wing for 10 minutes.’ We swapped positions. Robbo soon came back: ‘Aye, you’re all right now, go back over’.

I genuinely laughed out loud when I read that.

Robbo Legend.

Starting tomorrow by the sounds of it.

Giggs - Fellaini I'd imagine.

Yep. In a way, Fellaini is a decent counterpart to Giggs. The main ways playing the old guy hurts our football at the moment is his absence defensively and is lack of work to show for the defenders when they're trying to move the ball forwards. Fellaini does both pretty well. He should give Giggs a bit of licence to focus more on the things that he's still good at.

Giggsy has had a nice rest over the INT break, and he will no doubt do himself proud in his homeland.

Think having an experienced head next to Fellaini will help him also.

Agree completely, as Moyes said, he's learning what combinations are work well together. They have the potential to compliment each other in some ways, as you said above and it'd be nice to see Giggs carrying the ball through the middle with Fellaini screening. With that said though, neither are very good at the pass and move. If it's going to work then it's going to be through counter attacking. Looking to release our quicker players to catch on the break.

Brilliant interview. Liked the bit about Januzaj, and of course, Scholes hitting people in the bushes.

Not worried in the slightest. If Giggs is about to start, then it's 100% certain that he'll deliver, he knows that it all will be big, soon to be 40, Cardiff, another game, he'll be the man if he plays. Happy for him and happy to have him here. I love this guy.

Its almost december too, its when he hits form. On cue, every time!

Yeah it's good. They're also messing about him telling Moyes to pick him in games

Two quality balls when he came on. When the game is open, he can play as many long balls as he wants.

He's definitely our best fit midfielder at the moment. That's why we were saving him for Leverkusen.

I still think he should be retiring but when you see how much better than the likes of Cleverley and Fellaini it's them who should be hanging up their boots.

It's refreshing to see a midfielder who can pick out players on the move and deliver a through ball to find them. He did well in such a short time. It's our other midfielders who should be looking at themselves and wondering what's happened to their creativity.

Giggs has done more playing centrally during his brief stint on Sunday and today, than our younger midfielders - I'm not sure if he's brilliant, or the others have not been up to the mark.

 he was well pissed off at Nani for wasting that cross on the counter after Giggs sprinted the full length. Took him ages to get back.

He's amazing. Europe suits him though, less so the league .

True. I think he excels most in Europe, or home against teams in the bottom 10 in the PL.

It's working really well tonight with Giggs and Kagawa linking up.

Very good first half - he's generally better when he starts I think, and tonight he and Kagawa have looked very natural.
