Sporting Lisbon vs. Manchester United - Wednesday 19 September 2007 (19:45 BST)

no chance of Brown being dropped until Gaz return to the squad.

The ref for tomorrow is Herbert Fandel from Germany, the man who sent off Scholes against Roma last season.

Am i the only person that doesn't want to see Brown at RB anymore. Its not effective. We should have given Simpson a chance over the last couple of games as he was pretty highly rated at Sunderland last season.

FFS, Simpson has been out with groin injury for weeks :nono:

Reserve players will start Carling Cup matches. Never a Champions League match, unless everyone is injured.

Paulo Bento speaks ahead of Champions League clash.

Sporting Clube Coach Paulo Bento is well aware of the might of tomorrow’s visitors Manchester United, but is also sure that his men are up to the task of facing off against the Red Devils at Alvalade – and getting a positive result…

“We’re convinced that we’re able to play a great game. We know that this is a difficult competition but also know that we are capable of downing the biggest clubs if we keep our heads and play our game. The rival tomorrow is just about as big as they get, but we have self-confidence”, stressed Paulo Bento.

The Leões (Lions) tactician was also adamant that although they may not be able to enjoy as much ball possession as they usually can count on at home, they will have to resist the temptation to just parry attacks. “We can’t afford to lay back and watch; we must always be intervening.”

“We know that we can’t expect to run the game throughout the full ninety minutes but we are fully aware that we can’t let Manchester do what they like during ninety minutes. We have to hit them, in the good sense of the word, and when they are hitting us we need to enjoy the defensive game with an eye for any counter-attacks.”

The predicted Starting XI's from this morning's Telegraph >>

Sporting
(probable 4-4-2)

Stojkovic
Abel
Tonel
Polga
Ponny
Izmailov
Veloso
Romagnoli
Moutinho
Liedson
Djalo

Manchester United
(probable 4-2-3-1)

Van Der Sar
Brown
Ferdinand
Vidic
Evra
Carrick
Scholes
Ronaldo
Rooney
Giggs
Tevez

Hm, on the plus side Patrice is back in his natural position. Sure this is only a projected line up but if true, not starting Saha is a mistake IMO but there we go.

I like Sporting. I hope we beat them and win the group, but I hope they come second.

That'll have the added benefit of knocking Roma into the UEFA Cup, too.

We should wish just for us and let the others destroy themselves
Roma is a very good side and first place isnt sure for nobody, we should do our work and try to qualify as soon as possible to relax and focus on the league

Fair enough, but who here can say they enjoy seeing Brown at RB. If only Hargreaves was fit i'd rather play him there than Brown.

I have no problem with Wesley playing there, give him a break.

really hope anderson gets some minutes tonight .. he has played in portugal before , refs dont allow the game to get too physical .. lets see how good he is .

most probably be playing a defensive 4-5-1 .. CQ says we'll be cautious ..

i somehow doubt we'll be lining up with both Rooney and Tevez.

i'd bet Saha will start, and Rooney will be on the bench.

we show too much respect to the european clubs ..
play a normal 4-4-2 .. we'll run through them ...
but nah .. we need to stay back and look to nick on at the end .

dont think rooney will start .. maybe a sub ..
saha should start .. needs some practice .. 90 mins would be fine ,
giggs might be rested for chelsea , might be on the bench ..

the thing is if we rest giggs , we dont have enough central midfielders to play a 4-5-1 .. it'll be a 4-4-1-1 -ish formation with tevez playing deep

Its not that good a team.I know Moutinho,Djalo, are very good young players.Liedson and Veloso are decent.Other than that I dont think there is anybody we should really be worried about.I will be really surprised if we dont win this one even if it is away.

and united away from home in europe continues

I really think Saha should start this one and Giggs should go back to playing on the left wing...Patrice will give him plenty of help if his legs tire with the running.

Aye Moutinho, Djalo and Veloso all looked decent at the U21 Euros...

Veloso and Moutinho are very much passers, very good passers, and Djalo is tiny but very skillful... We really should beat this team though. Our away record in Europe is poor but United should do the business.

Same team that started the Everton game except Nani in for Silvestre.

0-2 Giggs, Ronaldo

Our reserve team just lost 5-2 to their youngsters.

Our seniors better do well tonight. :nervous:

Izmailov and Romagnoli are threats too.

The referee was irrelevant in that game as Scholes deserved to be sent off.

he may have deserved to get sent off, but the ref was hardly irrelevant in that game. he made several poor decisions. i can think of a couple off the top of my head, both involving Rooney jumping for the ball against a defender, and penalised for basically doing that. Fandel is a fussy referee. might be a good trait for a pianist, but it isn't for a football referee.

According to Richard Keys, Rooney is starting tonight.

anywhere i can watch this game on the internet?

could someone take me through how to do this? Never been able to do it before due to my pc not having enough juice
