The Fraizer Campbell Watch

Watching the game now. Fraizer's on fire. Liverpool have no clue how to deal with his pace, movement and aggression. Both his goals were excellent and he set up Pavlyuchenko terrifically.

Hope Gomes is alright. That didn't look too good.

Awful defending and a little bit lucky with the contact on his header. That said, two goals and an assist is fairly impressive. Far more so than Fernando Torres.

The day before the match, I dreamt Campbell scored a double hat-trick.

I need to sleep more.

Hopefully it was a premonition of when Campbell comes back to Old Trafford and does it in a United shirt!

i disagree - only time will tell who is correct ...
Don't think he'll become a regular for us.. Welbeck looks far more promising IMO and we have to remember that Berba's got 5-6 years in him, Rooney and Ronaldo are only 23, Tevez is 24 and I can't see him passing them in the pecking order, meaning he'll have to be sitting on the bench for most of his career before getting a starting place - and he will have moved on by then.

Well last night he showed such a determination. He chased every ball, his passing was really spot on and regardless of the goalkeeper wiping out the defender, the way he brought the ball down on his chest in the box showed just how confident and composed the lad is.

I hope he is back at Old Trafford next season making a name for himself.

I'm guessing he goes to a mid-level Premiership club this summer or next, for a healthy fee. Let's say...£7-10m.

Campbell replaced Bent on 70 minutes against Fulham today.

Scored. A well-placed finish with his right foot (apparently his weaker one?). Not an easy goal at all.

Campbell's right-footed, but he's pretty good with his left, using it fairly often.

I remember him scoring a fantastic goal, a curling shot with his left foot, when playing for Hull.

Here's the goal, it was well taken. Thanks to Kooora for he upload, 7amoodie for posting the link in another forum.

Can't stop scoring, it would seem.

Pearce praise for Campbell

From MEN
19/11/2008

ENGLAND Under-21 coach Stuart Pearce believes United youngster Fraizer Campbell has the potential to emulate Arsenal forward Theo Walcott and eventually force his way into Fabio Capello's senior squad.

The Reds striker, who is on loan at Tottenham, scored for the under-21 side in their comfortable 2-0 victory over Czech Republic at Bramall Lane.

Aston Villa's Craig Gardner also got on the scoresheet but it was the performance of man-of-the-match Campbell, who also won a penalty which was missed by Spurs team-mate Jamie O'Hara, that really stood out.

The 21-year-old was a constant threat to the Czech defence and took his goal superbly with a neat finish from a tight angle before he was later replaced by Sylvan Ebanks-Blake.

It capped a impressive few weeks for Campbell who scored twice against Liverpool in the Carling Cup and against Fulham in the Barclays Premier League.

"Fraizer played well. He was a threat and is a goalscorer and he is one of those players who is a constant danger to defenders because of his pace and his ability to get in behind," Pearce said.

"When we look at the development of Theo Walcott - he played all the games for us in the campaign and started every match.

"He got a nice run of form, a nice run of matches and confidence which helped his club scenario and obviously helped his chances in the seniors.

"If we can give a grounding here - and this is a successful team - whoever comes in whether they are winning their first cap or not they have to pick up the mantle of a winning side.

"And if the likes of Fraizer Campbell and one or two others can get a goal and go back to the club on Saturday, whether it be a friendly or not, then they are heading in the right direction."

Campbell, who scored 15 goals in 34 appearances to help Hull win promotion to the Premier League last season, is a relatively recent addition to Pearce's squad having made his under-21 debut against Poland in March.

And while Pearce is full of admiration for the striker he admitted he is keen for the youngster to develop certain aspects of his game and get more experience.

"I don't think we are looking at the finished article in Fraizer but then I would say that anyone who is playing under-21 level if I'm honest," Pearce added.

"There is still room for improvement for Fraizer. I'm aware of that, Fraizer is aware of that, and obviously the more experience he gets at club level the more we'll see a better player.

"Obviously confidence plays a part in that and if he knows he can score at this level and score in the Premier League then we have a real player on our hands."

I am beginning to get dissatisfied with this description of Campbell as just another pacy forward. The lad does actually a lot more in his locker. His decision making and composure have been improving of late, he is very good off the ball, very agile, possesses decent technique, doesn't know when he is beaten, an improving eye for a pass, etc.

To just brand him as having just pace is misleading.

Campbell keen to emulate Cole

Youngster idolised former England international

Fraizer Campbell is hoping to follow in the goal-laden footsteps of his boyhood idol Andy Cole.

The England U21 international is currently on a season-long loan at Tottenham, but Cole's former employers Manchester United still hold his registration.

Having joined the Red Devils as a teenager, Campbell admits that he looked up to those who provided the attacking threat in Sir Alex Ferguson's side.

Cole was one of those who helped United claim a clutch of silverware during a glittering period in the club's history, helping him to catch the eye of an impressionable Campbell.

While the 21-year-old has some way to go before he can claim to have emulated the achievements of his hero, the youngster is nothing if not ambitious.

Advice

"Andy was there when I first went to United and I was a bit awestruck at first, but it was great," said Campbell.

"I probably model myself on him a little because I watched him such a lot.

"I always thought, I want to be Andy Cole today, at school and stuff like that which never did me any harm. When I was younger I didn't used to support a team, I used to just support Andy Cole. He was the person I watched every week.

"He was really helpful to me. I even chat to him nowadays and he gives me tips on how to develop my game. He's been a mentor to me.

"He's given me advice on just about everything - his experiences in the game, what he did in training, what he did out of training. Just life advice really."

I don't think Campbell has what it takes to make it at the top top level in football.
You are greatly mistaken. He has the three most important attributes a striker at the top level should posses. Speed, intelligence and good finishing. The rest like good first touch, awareness and link up play will improve with experience and age. He is dead on to be a star either here at OT or elsewhere. At his current rate of progress.

He'll be the surprise package of England World Cup campaign. I expect him to make an Owen style display on the big stage. I think he has everything to be a top, top player. He has proved it at every clubs he's been too.

He hasn't played alot of football at Spurs this season, yet he's scoring goals for fun both at Spurs and on the International scene. I've been very impressed with him.

If we have to fork out 20 Mils for Tevez at the end of the season then we might just see him packing his bags with cambell coming back in to replace him!!

I agree that he has what it takes to play at the top level but I don't completely agree with your required criteria. You can be a top striker without speed. I'd say a good first touch is more important. Good finishing is, of course, required.

I've never really understood "intelligence". To me, intelligence means good awareness and good decision making.

That's why I said the three most important. Not the only requirements. A striker for example, can survive with just the other two and no speed. Berbatov is the perfect example.

Why I didn't mention first touch was that touch can be improved upon. Some are naturals with it like Berbatov. Others like Andy Cole for example improved with practice and age.

That's a great description for it for football in general. For me though, specifically, in terms of strikers, it means the ability to make good decisions while being marked, always picking out the right runs to make, or positions to take in and around the box. Which benefit teammates and the player in question.

Sir Alex pondering Campbell recall

Sir Alex Ferguson admits he recall Fraizer Campbell from his loan spell at Tottenham in January - but will not let Danny Welbeck leave on loan.

The Manchester United boss reluctantly allowed Campbell to join the White Hart Lane outfit on transfer deadline day as part of the deal that saw Dimitar Berbatov move north for a club record £30.75million fee.

Although Campbell struggled to impress former boss Juande Ramos, he has been given his chance by Harry Redknapp and scored three times in two games as Spurs' revival gathered pace.

The 21-year-old also scored for England Under-21s in their victory over the Czech Republic at Bramall Lane on Tuesday, confirming he is a man in form.

Redknapp has spoken of his desire to sign Campbell on a permanent basis. However, Ferguson has revealed a clause in the youngster's loan agreement that would allow him to go back to United in January.

And, if Campbell keeps going at his present rate, Ferguson would not be scared to use it.

"We could pull him back in January," said Ferguson. "We have to the option and it is a possibility. The boy has been fantastic at Spurs.

"He is a good player but we needed to get him first-team experience, so we agreed to it so the deal with Berbatov went through."

However, while Campbell's short-term future remains undecided, Welbeck's is very much at Old Trafford.

The Longsight-born star does not celebrate his 18th birthday until next week but he has already made a big impression on Ferguson.

Welbeck scored on his Premier League debut against Stoke last Saturday and, with Berbatov sidelined for at least a couple of games after picking up a hamstring injury in Bulgaria's encounter with Serbia on Wednesday, will retain his place in Ferguson's squad for Saturday's visit to Aston Villa and the Champions League trip to Villarreal.

His improvement has been so rapid, some pundits have suggested Welbeck will be the next United player to further their education elsewhere for a short time.

But Ferguson feels Welbeck is too young to lose day-to-day control of his development and by mixing infrequent appearances in the first team with events like next Thursday's Youth Cup tie with Chelsea at Old Trafford, he can get enough football by staying where he is.

"It would be crazy to let Danny go out on loan," said Ferguson. "He is too young. He is still that gangly lad who has not fully matured.

"We can work on his physique knowing we are not playing him all the time.

"He trains with the first-team squad all the time now but he can also go and enjoy himself playing for the youth team or the reserves."

The attention on Welbeck has only increased because Ghana have made a bid for his services.

Capped by England at Under-19 level, Welbeck could continue along the Three Lions path or choose to represent the country of his parents.

Ferguson has offered some sound advice - ignore both and play for Scotland instead.

"His parents are from Ghana so it is not a surprise," he added. "It is the boy's choice, although I would be surprised if he didn't play for Scotland. That is my big challenge now."

Meanwhile at the other end of the age scale, Paul Scholes' has been pencilled in for a December 10 comeback against Aalborg.

The former England star has been out since suffering knee ligament damage against the Danish outfit in mid-September.

Scholes' recent recovery has been so rapid there had been suggestions he could feature against Manchester City next weekend.

That will not happen. But Ferguson says the 34-year-old could be in action immediately before the visit to Tottenham on December 13, which precedes the Club World Cup in Japan.

"Paul is coming on fine," said Ferguson. "He will be ready for the week of the Tottenham game.

"He has started to involve himself in some of the first-team training sessions because, as always with that type of injury, he has made good progress.

"It will be a few weeks yet but he is not far away now."

Interesting. If he comes back it may be a sign that Tevez is off in the summer. Or that Danny will go on loan next season.

Shearer wasn't particularly fast and Sherrigham certainly wasn't. Both top strikers

Looking at what Fergie has been saying, I'd say he rates Campbell pretty highly if he wants him back in the New Year. Looks like Campbell at least has the drive and ambition to make it but he must be given the chance, especially as he's built up some momentum.

Can't see a reason to call him back if he gets first team football at Spurs.
