The MMA thread

UFC 93 coming to Dublin on January 17th. I'm absolutely fecking delighted.

So far, Dan Henderson v Rich Franklin and Shogun Rua v Mark Coleman. That's a great start to the card.

I cannot wait.

Thats great news, think I shall be making my first trip to Dublin for that - when do the tickets go on sale?

I don't know. I have spent the last hour checking but no sign of them, not even a mention of it. The official UFC website says that an announcement will be made soon regarding tickets. I'm going to try and get mine as soon as possible just in case they are sold out.

I'm over the moon with this news.

Could you point me in the direction of a nearby hotel to the Dublin 02 - not getting much joy on google. I have flights sorted at £72pp from Manchester, not too sure if this is a good price?

With regards to the tickets, I'm going to make sure I buy them on the day of release this time, got stung with tickets costing more than £100 each for Brum in a couple of weeks for a slightly better view.

Henderson V's Franklin is a great headliner, if I find out info regarding tickets I shall post em - a good tip for you, it might be a good time to sign up for the UFC newsletter right about now, as closer to the time they will e-mail you a password so you can book tickets a few days before they go on general sale.

£72pp isn't bad from Manchester. I checked them on Ryanair and it would be possible to get them for £45.46.

What kind of hotel do you want to stay in? Anyone around the city centre is going to be expensive. A double room in Wynn's Hotel in Abbey St in the centre of Dublin would cost approx €150. It'd be a nice hotel.

Beside that is a 2 star really basic hotel called the Hotel Capri. I've stayed in it and it is extremely basic but it will do as you will be probably be hammered after a night out.

It just depends on what you want. The O2 arena will be about 10 minutes at most by taxi from the city centre.

I'm going to take your advice and sign up for that newsletter.

Cheers for the info, my mate is on a budget so the Hotel Capri looks a good option - and the price for the flights is much better booking direct, my price was through an agent - so thats at least 31 euros pp saved, so thank you for that.

What tends to happen in England is they announce when the tickets go on sale, then allow UFC members to order these tickets 1-2 week before general sale - but a UFC membership cost a couple hundred euros, but signing up for the newsletter gives you a 1 or 2 day advantage over people buy them on general sale, so it pretty much guarantee's you a ticket.

I'm really excited, very decent fights lined up & my first trip to the emerald isle, cant wait.

Yea I signed up for the newsletter. I'd presume that they will go on sale within a couple of weeks. I don't know what the demand is going to be like over here so I'm going to get them straight away, and hopefully get something close to the octogon itself (depending on the prices).

Your first trip to the Emerald Isle? You'll see feck all of it, only really the city centre of Dublin. It's great for pubs and stuff, there's not too much else.

I've already got the whole thing planned. I'm going for a few nice Guinness first in the local in Clontarf (about ten mins away from the arena) just to settle the stomach. Heading with my two brothers, it should be good craic.

Franklin is one of my favourite fighters. I haven't been overly impressed with Henderson even if he did win his last fight. I think Franklin could knock him out even if Henderson has an iron chin.

It'll be interesting to see what the other fights are going to be. I hope that there'll be another couple of big names on the card by January.

Elite XC : Heat is on CBS next Saturday.

Kimbo vs Ken Shamrock

and apparently Arlovski will be fighting Roy Nelson on it as well....

Kimbo slice was supposed to fight Ken Shamrock on Saturday night. Shamrock had to pull out 1hr before the fight was to take place due to an injury, and a replacement stepped in. Little does Kimbo know that Unknown Seth Petruzelli is about to shock the MMA world, and kick his ass.

I thought the fight was stopped too early, given it was hardly a huge shot that landed but then when you see Kimbo lying on the floor with no defence whatsoever, then trying to shoot on the referee after the stoppage and then you realise he wasn`t there at all. At least Kimbo made some dollars in his short career. Dunno what he does from now.

Who'd have thought he'd have such a glass jaw? Can't believe he was so addled by a short, straight right.

Either he's never got properly tagged in all those street fights or his aging brain is rattling round more than it used to, inside that massive skull of his.

CBS has too much invested at this point for him to go away. He'll have another match against some punching bag. I like how the commentators were trying to spin it as thye karate expert with a couple good front kicks setting up the punch. The dude was scared shitless trying to keep him away and caught him with a jab on the eye and then never hit him again. Gina C could beat Slice.

Tis true. You could tell that celebration was him going "thank feck that was over quickly" as much as anything else.

Say what you like about Kimbo, I reckon he's a scary dude to face up to across the cage. Shite MMA fighter, it seems, but a scary fecker all the same.

 yeah, it wasn`t the most convincing "attack" by the guy. then after the fight he was running around like fecking Rocky Balboa. Oh well, let him be the next to enjoy his 15 mins of fame before he gets exposed.

Oh hell ya he'd be scary. I've trained in both Kenpo and BJJ and I'd hate to see that fecker coming at me. Big, strong and say what you want a bad ass on the street. It goes to a point I tell my brother who has trained some, most people on the street would get detroyed by someone with a reasonable amout of training.

That can be a dangerous line of thinking, especially for people who've learned a little bit of MMA. Next thing they know, some cnut's bitten their nose off, or smacked them with a bottle. Getting into street fights with strangers is a mug's game, no matter how well trained you are.

I used to do a bit of boxing but I made absolutely sure that I never needed to use anything I'd learned, outside the ring. Lot of very dangerous dudes out there, not so much because they're skilled fighters, but because they just don't give a feck about consequences.

Well the myth of Kimbo has been destroyed. Petrezelli is a UFC reject who was fighting at LHW. The thing is Kimbo is certainly not going anywhere. The ratings were way too good for CBS and ELITEXC to ditch him. Set up the Shamrock fight again and they'll still get good ratings.

Lesnar is a prime example. The PPV buys for his 2nd fight were huge even though he got exposed in his first fight. Kimbo will be back.

Arlovski needs a new nickname... something like the IFL King Killer. After dominating the last 2 IFL HW champs. Nelson actually thought it was a bad stoppage.

Shields is so overrated it isn't funny. His submission transition game is weak. If he ever wants to face the big boys in the UFC's WW division he will have to improve greatly, since his striking is average at best.

Carano needs to fight Cyborg. It would be the only women's fight worth watching.

Oh for sure. No matter how trained a person is, always avoid a confrontation at all costs. I think the first 3 or 4 years of training you are actually more dangerous to yourself than to an attacker. You think you know what you're doing but you don't know enough.

Arlovski is maybe my favourite fighter. I think it`s the beard.

I thought Shields was shit. If Daley could have done anything at all on the ground instead of lying there like a fecking wet blanket, I think he could have knocked him out or at least tested him as Shields already looked gassed.

think that the Kimbo/italian dude fight was rigged. he hardly hit Kimbo and the rest of the stuff when Kimbo was on his belly didn't look too convincing either.

fix!

I doubt that Elite would want to sabotage their biggest draw. They sort of screwed themselves with Kimbo getting knocked out by a nobody. Now no one will give a shit about him.

I just don't see the big knockdown punch and everything that followed wasn't so great either. I watched the slow-mo and it just looked too easy.

His swollen eye didn't look rigged. ;) Neither did the part when he went for a single leg on the ref.

I just saw a clip of David Blaine take two punches in the stomach from Kimbo (dont know if its an old clip?). If you get the chance to floor Blaine and dont grab it with both hands - then your not fit to be a MMA fighter.

fecking hell. That bullet trick was nifty.

I agree with you that it did not look like much of a punch, but I think it would be extremely dumb for Kimbo to throw this fight. He could have kept on fighting no namers and getting paid

Here is a link to a site where they are talking about this conspiracy theory:

Here we go....

He said his original plan against Kimbo was to get him to the ground and exploit his weak wrestling skills and submission defense. It made more sense than trading punches with a street brawler who outweighed him by 30 pounds. Petruzelli said he changed his mind though.

“The promoters kind of hinted to me, and they gave me the money to stand and trade with him,” he told “The Monsters in Orlando” radio show. “They didn’t want me to take him down, let’s just put it that way. It was worth my while to try to stand up and punch with him.”

 "Decided to stand and trade with him"

Last time I checked, cowering against fence, panic punching didn't fall into this bracket. Fair play to the lad for landing one on Kimbo & beating him, fair play to him milking his victory - but straight up lying about his fight mentality is ridiculous.

I'd stand and trade with Kimbo for an extra 20 grand. Look at the Cantrell fight, two punches to his face and he taps before he hits the ground. I'd do that for 20 grand extra!
