The MMA thread

UFC 93 in Dublin has been sold out. They still only have Henderson v Franklin and Coleman v Shogun listed. I hope they put a couple more top fights on and a decent looking undercard. Otherwise it'll be fairly shite apart from the main events.

Regarding Bisping calling out Silva, is he mad?

no... hes a guy who realises that taking a battering for a few munites will be the biggest pay day he will see in his life...

ffs... show me the money and ill get in an octagon with fedor, silva, gsp or bj penn... infact throw enough money in my bank and ill fight them all at once!

my bank balance would numb the inevitable pain quite nicely

Bisping is much cockier than that and thinks he has a good chance. Unless he caught Anderson which a freak knockout punch on the scale of Serra v GSP, he wouldn't have a hope.

yeah... but id take a punchers chance and a million+dollars...

and id call out whoever i needed to in orger to get the chance!

i think hes just concious that if silva steps up which has been heavily rumored it would take his potentially big pay day away so he wants to get it sorted asap...

also if he did manage to last a couple of rounds he would then probably get another shot at the vacant title if silva does step up...

just thinking with his wallet and cant blame a fighter for that... but yes if silva wants to take him apart he will

Couture v Lesnar on Saturday? What do you think?

Personally I think Lesnar will be too quick and strong. He has the strength to dominate Couture at his own game. It won't exactly be easy for Couture to wrestle Brock to the ground. I think Brock will take him within the first three rounds, probably by ground and pound. I hope Randy can pull something extraordinary out of the bag again though. I do not think that Lesnar has done anything to deserve a title shot. And if he does win it, Nogeira will take it straight back off him.

yeah i agree with pretty much all of that...

would give frank mir a reason to think hang on that should be me... would love to see him get back to form and become the fighter it looked like he could be...

though in truth the heavyweight title is devalued imo by not having fedor in there... ffs zuffa let him fight in the sambo as well (i believe thats the main stumbling block to a contract)

Looking forward to weekend, should be a good'en.

For me, the way to beat Lesnar would be to submit him, don't even think Randy will have to take him down to get a submission opportunity - having said that, I think the fight will depend on how Randy wants to approach it, hope they both want to stand and trade.

My money is on Couture - there can't be a world champion with zero BJJ can there?

i think that bjj will become a little less prevalant over the next few years...

i had a keysi seminar with andy norman and jutso (the guys who invented it the other day) and some mma fighters came along... there was some truely devastating stuff from the pensador gaurd that rendered a lot of bjj useless...

i can see that coming in over the next few years (bob the guy who held the seminar runs a martial art magazine as well and so i think there might be an article about keysi in mma in this or the next issue)...

in truth bjj will always play a big part as you are not allowed small joing manipulation / biting / eye gouges etc (which do render a lot of bjj usless in the street... you cant even use a kali sprawl properly as that banned as well and would be the takedown defence most rbma would use against bjj)... bring back kicking to the head as well... its all too skewed towards bjj people just getting in gaurd imo

That's some interesting reading about the direction the sport could be going, the great thing about MMA is that there will always be progression in terms of style - as much as I've enjoyed Lesnars transition into MMA, I just feel that he's great to watch but very two dimensional - I'd hate to think if he became champion that he would get hand picked wrestlers all the time. There still time to learn, just hope someone has shown him the Herring fight and shown him how to take advantage of someone's back

the full article is in this months martial ats illustrated...

some v good techniques with flowing hammer fists to rattle the brain inside the skull which makes it virtually impossible grab the arms (because of the fulidity andthe shock)... i actually was surprised as i felt keysi was week defensivley standing up... but very good to attack from if taken down

If Mir can beat Nogueira in his next fight, he'll face the winner of Randy and Brock. It'll be tough to beat the best there is at bjj though.

unless your fedor... then it would probably be a piece of piss

I'd love to see Fedor fight against Brock. He's beat him within a minute.

I honestly don't think Randy would have a chance against Fedor. I would love to see the two of them meet though.

yup... hes beeten Nogueira twice and although i think mir is good hes not in the same class as fedor...

ive said it before but the heavyweight ufc title is devalued by not having him there...

apparently if zuffa would allow him to compete in the sambo championships as well he would sign...

Zuffa should do everything in his power to allow Fedor fight in the UFC and if that means letting him fight in the sambo championships then so be it. UFC cannot claim to be the outright number one when it comes to MMA when the top heavyweight in the world does not fight with them.

Fedor also didn't like the fact that the UFC controls your marketing rights. They make millions off the fighters backs and give them a very small portion of the money earned off marketing. That's why they hate when fighters have agents.

If you want to see the real HW Championship of MMA, watch Affliction's next PPV. Fedor vs Arlovski.

I'd love to. Arlovski is one of my favourite fighters. But I don't think you can get it over here. I only saw the Fedor v Sylvia match last month when that Affliction ppv was shown - months later.

That sucks. No PPV providers over there?

Not for Affliction. If Setanta realised the potential of it, I'm sure they would snap it up. They took the UFC pretty quick. I'm sure as many who watch Couture v Lesnar next Saturday would tune in to Fedor v Arlovski (which I'd rather watch). When is the next Affliction PPV?

Although a good thing about the UFC over here is that it is not PPV. Setanta just show it as a regular programme. I bought Setanta so I can watch it free of charge.

cant you get it on the web???

It'd be great to see him fight again. He is the best there is.

I presume you'll be going to the UFC in London? Silva v Chuck would be class.

No he isn't. He is MAJORLY overhyped in one of if not the weakest division in all of MMA.

There are at least two guys ahead of him in the UFC and then there is a guy named Fedor who is light years ahead of everyone else.

You think Anderon Silva is overhyped? Have you not seen him fight?

So who do you predict will win the main fights tonight. I think it's going to be really hard to predict.

Anway, I'll probably be completely wrong but here are my picks anyway.

Randy Couture (C) v Brock Lesnar

This could go either way. Randy's main strength is his wrestling ability but he shouldn't be able to cope with Lesnar on that front. Randy is better at nearly everything else. It really could go either way. I don't think it will last 5 rounds though. I think it'll be hard for Randy to win by his normal ground and pound game as Lesnar will be so hard to take down and keep down. If Lesnar gets on top of Randy and starts pounding, Randy will find it hard to get up. I'm going to favour Lesnar and say he will win in the second round by ground and pound.

Kenny Florian v Joe Stevenson

This could be fight of the night. Florian is heavily fancied in this and is big favourite. I wouldn't be so sure though. If he can get within reach, he will pose a major threat. He is arguably a better stand up and better on the ground that Florian, but Florian has a big reach advantage. I'm going to go for Stevenson. I don't know how he will win, maybe a points decision.

Gabriel Gonzaga v Josh Hendricks

I think this depends on which Gonzaga turns up, the one that fought Cro Cop or the one that fought Randy. I think Gonzaga will win on points.

Nate Quarry v Demian Maia

Interesting fight. One is extremely good on his feet and the other is brilliant of the ground. I think if Maia gets Quarry to the ground he will submit him. If he can get Quarry to the ground before being knocked out, he will win. I'll go with Maia to win with a submission.

All very tough to predict. It should be a good card.

Looking forward to this, think you might be right about the Florian/Stevenson fight being the pick of the bunch - only thing I'm not looking forward to is staying up until 6am.

Well I wouldn't count on Randy v Lesnar being too exciting anyway. I'm going to head to bed for a couple of hours after I watch the football highlights on RTE.

I agree with those picks....

Randy Couture (C) v Brock Lesnar

younger... should have the energy to win... only to be humiliated my mir again when they fight next

Kenny Florian v Joe Stevenson

a very very good fighter... might go the distance though

Gabriel Gonzaga v Josh Hendricks

just my gut feeling...

Nate Quarry v Demian Maia

more experience and maia has not shown enough of a stand up game when ive seen him

odds for tonight

03:30 Nate Quarry 9/5 v Demian Maia 2/5

04:00 Gabriel Gonzaga 2/9 v Josh Hendricks 3/1

04:30 K Florian 8/25 v J Stevenson 7/5

05:00 Brock Lesnar 8/13 v Randy Couture 6/5

So the bookies heavily favour Maia, Napao, Florian and Lesnar. I'm surprised that Lesnar is so heavily favoured. I love to see Randy cause an "upset".

Forgot to mention, anyone see this weeks Ultimate Fighter? I've watched this clip over & over, what a moron...

After he came around, he claimed it wasn't a knock out, it was just a knock down & that he still had never been knocked out, to many bangs to the head I think. The penalty shootout between Mir & Noguera was pretty funny.

The salary schedule for both competitors involved in tonight’s UFC 91 main event have been made available to the general public. Typically such information does not become available until after a fight card is completed, however, Nevada State Athletic Commission executive director Keith Kizer has revealed to the Los Angeles Times that both Randy Couture and Brock Lesnar are guaranteed $250,000 each. Additionally, Couture is to be paid $250,000 if he wins with Lesnar set to receive $200,000 should he be victorious.

It is important to note that both Couture and Lesnar stand to earn substantially more for their efforts in tonight’s fight. Both Couture and Lesnar will be eligible to win fight night bonuses such as cash rewards for “Fight of the Night,” “Knockout of the Night,” and “Submission of the Night.” Based on UFC president Dana White’s stated projection of 1.2 million pay-per-view buys, the promotion could give a record total in fight night bonuses.

Also, while not confirmed, based on past contract provisions, both Couture and Lesnar are expected to receive a percentage of PPV revenue generated from tonight’s fight. When it’s all said and done, both Couture and Lesnar are expected to make seven figures a piece from UFC 91.

Fans wishing to watch the UFC 91 show featuring Brock Lesnar vs. Randy Couture online for free via live video stream, can do so by clicking http://www.wrestleboard.com/.

That was hilarious. I cannot believe he thought that he was conscious.

I missed the penalty shoot out.

I laughed my ass off at that! I hit rewind on the PVR at least 10 times and watched it over and over....

I don't want go give any spoilers. That was a fantastic card of matches. Some great submissions and knockouts.

UFC 95: London, February 21

Just hit my inbox about 40 minutes ago; the UFC will return to the O2 Arena in London on February 21. Fight Club presale starts on the 17th of this month, with tickets available to the public starting on the 21st.

I find it quite interesting that an event has been announced without so much as even one official match-up to anchor it. A ballsy move by the UFC, for sure - especially in this economic climate.

Anyone care to have a guess at who we'll se on the fight card?

Rumor has it that it could possibly be Anderson Silva v Chuck Liddell - going to throw every penny I have at this one, possibly the only time Anderson Silva will fight in th UK if the rumors are true...

probably bisping and hardy will be on there i would have thought...

dunno about silva / liddell that could be a huge ppv event and the uk times dont fit in so well with that... but i hope im wrong... it would be great to see silva fight... who knows silva - bisping????????

ideally
fedor - lesnar
griffin - rampage
silva - bisping
gsp - hardy
penn - huerta...

realistically nothing like that!

id like to see dan get somebody like kosacheck or serra... somebody i think he can beat up and start making a name for himself...

bisping would probably fight on the bill... so would paul kelly...

just hope its a better quality bill than the one in birmingham...

i'll for sure be going if dans fighting
