The MMA thread

Really looking forward to GSP/Penn now. Only really gotten into UFC in the past 3-4 months, so I can't really comment on who I'd fancy to win. I've watched their fight from 2006, and I thought GSP shaded it.

BJ weights in at 168, GSP at 170. GSP is looking ripped. (I sound quite gay)

thing is though gsp will have watercut to get down to that and will fight somewhere between 180 andd 185... penn will probably fight at 168-170 as its his natural weight...

i can gsp just rag dolling him...

interestingly at the weigh in they said that wandeleri silva is going to go down to 185lbs...

silva silva anyone?...

i still just can't call this fight (Penn/GSP). i do think that BJ maybe a little too emotional about it. but, to be honest that could also go in his favour.

the rest of the card is awesome. i just can't wait. i'm having a quiet night in and waiting until the feckwads in my shared house have gone to bed, then roll on showtime!

p.s i'm gonna tip GSP, but really, it's so tough to call this one.

Right, picks please.

Main Event – UFC Welterweight Championship

BJ Penn (168) VS Georges St-Pierre (170) - Controversial I know, I just get a feeling BJ is going to get a submission early on.

Thiago Silva (206) VS Lyoto Machida (206)
Dong Hyun Kim (171) VS Karo Parisyan (170)
Clay Guida (156) VS Nate Diaz (156)
Jon Jones (206) VS Stephan Bonnar (206)

If BJ is gonna win it'll be by KO rather than submission. My picks are the exact same as you for tonight's fights.

I dont think GSP is going to stand & trade, straight from the off I can see him going for the take down, this will be where BJ would've concentrated his training for this fight.

But yeah if GSP stand & trades, I reckon BJ would be favorite for the KO.

I cant wait for this.

Thiago Silva VS Lyoto Machida tko
Dong Hyun Kim VS Karo Parisyan tko

p.s i think the Machida - Silva fight could end up being fight of the night.

and i'm sticking to my GSP prediction. i just think BJ being so much more emotional than ever before will hinder him from the 2nd round onwards (if it gets that far). i think he'll fly out and attack and will take the first round. but GSP will start to dominate and find openings that BJ might not give usually.

or maybe BJ is just so pumped up he's gone destroy GSP...!

but i'm sticking with GSP.

really enjoyed the night. not as show stopping as 92, but some really interesting results. i picked 3 out of 5 winners, which is more than i was expecting.

Nate Diaz disappointed me, and Clay Guida really impressed. i thought Diaz would make Guida look 1 dimensional, but as it was, the opposite happened. Guida kinda reminds me of our own Tevez in his positive attitude and relentless, bull like persistance. Diaz didn't look himself, he didn't impose ANY of his own will onto the fight. his hands looked good at times when standing. but, his BJJ was completely dominated by Guida's wrestling base.

Jon Jones did what i thought he would (potential future star) against Bonnar, except he didn't stop him. looked like he was going to a few times though! really impressed with Jones and can't wait to see him again. those suplexes, spinning elbows, and back kicks! man!

Dong Hyun Kim VS Karo Parisyan was an interesting one, because Kim looked so good in the first round and a half. kept going for the standing rear naked choke and his hands looked good. but he seemed to wilt. good to see Karo back after his problems, but Kim let the fight slip from him i feel.

Machida looks better and better every time i see him. rapidly becoming one of my current favourite fighters, and a fascinating fighter to watch. i'm really interested to see him fight against somone with fast powerful hands, and a good stand up game at 205. maybe Rampage? i think his next fight might well be against Franklin. i'd look forward to that, too.

and Penn VS Georges St-Pierre was way more one sided than i guessed. it's the only pick that i got completely right (Machida didn't tko Silva, he ko'd him!). but it totally shocked me how easily GSP nullified Penn. it wasn't just his size either, you could see him physically anticipating what BJ was going to do/where he was going to move. of course his fantastic physical base made it easier for him to control Penn. but, he was quicker too with the jab, way quicker in fact.

he just made BJ look average, which was surreal to watch. i'm a Penn fan, and GSP fan. but i thought BJ talked too much before the fight and got lost in his own emotions somewhat. he didn't seem to have any kind of plan b.

GSP was brilliant last night. After the first round which was fairly even, he just took complete control of BJ. GSP was just so far ahead physically and he didn't give BJ a second to impose any of his own will on the fight. The only disappointment for me was that it took 4 rounds for GSP to finish the fight. Still, he looked amazing for 3 of those rounds. BJ should stay in the lightweight division. He looks much better at that weight and looks far better than anyone else in that division. GSP is going to walk through Alves in the next fight.

Machida and Silva was a great fight. Machida is brilliant to watch. He never seems to get hit and his counter attacking is second to none. He picked apart Silva and showed that he is a level above him. Machida has a record of 14 and 0 and he probably deserves a title shot. He has beaten a who's who of MMA fighters as well along the way such as Tito Ortiz, BJ Penn, Rich Franklin, Stephan Bonnar and against Sokoujou when he was amazing. I think he has the potential to knock out Rashad in the first round as Rashad is a slow starter.

I didn't realise how good Jon Jones was. He was excellent in the first couple of rounds and should have finished Bonnar off. He was lucky enough to win in the end as he was extremely exhausted and Bonnar should have had a better attempt at getting the victory. That suplex that Jones did was out of this world.

Karo is one of my favourite fighters but he disappointed me last night. He was lucky enough with the decision. He has all the natural talent in the world but he really needs to improve his strength and cardio. He is nowhere even close to good enough for a title shot compared to when he was originally given a title shot a couple of years ago.

Diaz was disappointing. Guida is a good fighter but he is limited. Diaz came across as a bit of a prick as well. I was glad when Guida won. That's two good victories for him now over Danzig and Diaz and he is rising up the ladder quickly. A decent striker could knock him out fairly easily though. His stand up is very poor.

I've got a link where you can watch UFC 1-70 Odd the guy keeps updating them.

Anyone wants it PM me.

I've just started watching it, from no.1 It's class!

Does anyone have a link to last night's fight ? Cheers

There was a bit of controversy in the GSP v Penn fight with some allegations being made alluding to the use of vaseline by GSP's corner.

Did anyone notice how many times Fedor's name was dropped throughout the show? I have never noticed another fighter from another promotion being mentioned so much. Does Joe Rogan know something we don't?

gsp vs anderson silva...

gsp could easily fight at 185...

after letting bj penn compete for the ww title surely the ufc must let gsp fight for the mw... that would be an amazing fight

anybody else got tickets for the london ufc?

Can't see Fedor fighting for UFC. I'm not sure but I've heard his brother is a russian mobster and they have ties with affliction so getting him to move over to UFC would take a whole of doing. Heard this a couple of times, but I'm not sure as to the accuracy of this.

I think you should be banned from making predictions!

I think GSP will dominate BJ. He's just too good.

Smart guy is that Swerny

I will just point out that I have got the last 2 main cards 100% right and said GSP would ragdoll penn... modestly not being my strongest character trait

as renzo gracie said... as many times as gsp fights bj penn is as many times as gsp will win...

Do you reckon GSP is physically good enough to compete at 185 against the likes of Anderson Silva? He could end up fighting other fighters much bigger than him like Dan Henderson, etc.
