Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Cloudy is great, and it's sequel isn't too shabby either.

If the discussion is around animated films, I'll show some love for How to Train Your Dragon, and it's sequel - both of which, whilst being very child orientated, are still great fun, and full of heart.

Ah yeah, called it Dragons, forgot the name in English. I thought the sequel was very good in that Dreamworks/Sony trend of (very) entertaining animation films, whereas the first one, especially the parts where the kid learns how to train the dragon, were more heartwarming and had a bit more soul. The sequel was a bit more 'blockbuster-y' for me, but still very enjoyable.

Have you seen Inside Out yet AN?

Not yet - it's not released in the UK for another month or so.

I get what you're saying about HTTYD2 - but then it also has:

A scene in which the main characters pet, kills his own father

Which is pretty damn heavy for a kids film... wonder if they'll exploit that storyline if/when a sequel comes.
 
Wish I Was Here is a lovely film. The girl who plays Zach Braff's daughter is good little actress. Quite surprised at the reception it got.
 
52 Pick-up

A fun little gem with a nasty streak from the 80's written by Elmore Leonard and directed by John Frankenheimer. Excellent story with a good performance from Roy Scheider as he progresses through the film gaining the upper hand. The villains are all good too but particularly John Glover who provides a comedic/sinister mix of a role. Only complaint is the cheesy synth score, but the shots of LA are good and it never drags.

Out Of The Dark
A family move to Colombia and then there daughter gets kidnapped and the family are haunted by supernatural beings. Has a few good scenes where the tension is built really well but overall it's very forgettable and the ghosts just dont look scary at all. I watched it yesterday night and already cant really remember it too well 4/10
 
Listen Up Philip - If Alex Ross Perry's last feature was giving shout outs to John Cassavetes then this is certainly throwing glances in Woody Allen's direction. Jason Schwartzman gives his usual high quality performance as someone who doesn't have the greatest social skills, in this case a writer who lacks empathy or consideration to anyone but himself, and we follow his relationships with his girlfriend, played by the impressive Elisabeth Moss, the delectable Josephine De La Baume and Jonathan Pryce, who plays his literary hero. Introspective but with a slightly ethereal hint, this certainly won't be everyone's cup of tea but if you thought Greenberg was too cheerful for you then you may like this.
 
Into the storm
It's on Sky Prem now. I missed the first half thankfully, but the gist of it is that a massive tornado hits America. Naturally some bellend characters you don't give a shit about chase it and film it. They get caught and have to weather the storm, as it were. It's a biggie. Somewhat implausibly it hurls parked airliners thousands of feet into the air and tosses round articulated lorries like they are matchsticks.
In short, it's relentlessly tedious and a good antidote to those times when you feel life is passing you by all too quickly. An hour watching this film feels like a thousand lifetimes.
When the dad inexplicably goes outside to ram the gate shut- the gap had previously looked to narrow to fit any vehicle down- it's a load of bollocks. One minute the truck is blown up into the clouds and the next he left dangling half-naked in a tree. Whore's abortion of a film.

Watched "Sorceror" also known as "Wages of Sin" the other night starring Scheider, brilliant taut thriller
 
Minions.

Fantastic sequel to Despicable Me. For a movie which has minions (well for this one three main ones), that dont speak English (minionese which is derived from Spanish it seems), the movie was carried fantastically well. You really get to understand the three main minions and enjoy their antics as they search for an evil villian to serve, which seems them be heroes. Some fantastic comedy involved, with a really enjoyable plot.

Plus who doesnt love minions?
 
Knock, Knock - Keanu Reeves' magnum opus. Only time will tell but I think this has the pedigree to sit in the pantheon of greats alongside The Room and The Wicker Man.
 
It Follows
I can see why a lot of people don't like this but I thought it was pretty good. It isn't really scary but extremely creepy and atmospheric which a very good plot. The acting was excellent and I loved the use of music. However, you have to look past a LOT of plot holes/inconsistencies otherwise you will hate it 7.5/10

But yeah, not overly fond of Up either, it's their most childish, which is fine since they are children's films first and foremost for adults to also appreciate and like. Inside Out is not a childish movie at all. It is full of emotions and how to cope up with life. There is a lot to learn from this movie. It is definitely right up there with Wall-E, Ratatouille , Finding Nemo and Toy Story.
 
The Canal (2014)
What a truly awful film, so disjointed and thrown together through poor editing. The flash back scenes to the murder in the 1900's looked awful as well, I know it had a small budget but I'm pretty certain they could of looked better than they did. Within 20 mins the partner and myself had lost all interest in the outcome really. 4.5/10

Mad Max: Fury Road
Absolutely loved it, from the opening scene to last it kept me gripped. I wasn't so sure about the plot line at first as it felt quite rushed into, but having seen the previous MM trilogy it was pieced together quite easily. Quite enjoyed the look of the main villain, Immortan Joe. The cinematography was fantastic, action sequences superb and solid performances from Theron and Hardy.

The Woman in Black:
A reasonably good horror / thriller movie, Har...sorry, Daniel Radcliffe puts in a good performance. I loved the cinematography here and there are plenty of scary parts in it that do make you jump. Bit of a predictable ending though all the same, I called it long before it happened, the missus wasn't very impressed :lol:
Anyway, enjoyable enough movie, 6.5/10

Insidious 3

This is a prequel to the other 2 and to be honest I was disappointed a bit, yes it was way better than the first on but worse than the second one.
I thought it was very much a film of 2 parts, part 1 the first hour was excellent, good background story , very eerie music setting a nice tone, then part 2 where dumber and dumber come in to it and just like the first film for me it fell apart, story got daft and the ending was a bit of a letdown, but still I enjoyed it and for horror fans well worth watching.


8/10 for part 1 , 4/10 for part 2.

6/10 for the whole film seems about right.

Terminator : Genisys

Getting pretty boring, I'm getting older I guess that even Arnie's one liner leaves a bad taste in my head, and Jai Courtney... urgh... They're trying to be everything but excel at nothing, couldn't care less about anyone other than Arnie. He still has it, he does. Was a good popcorn flick, but nothing else. It wasn't such a bad movie if T2 wasn't such a beloved classic

Nope. I don't have kids and saw this with the wife the other day.

Was highly skeptical going in but I enjoyed it. Was refreshing to see a kids movie that was just funny, without trying to preach some message.
Plus, I defy anyone to watch a little yellow blob trying to chat up a New York fire hydrant in bad French without laughing loudly.
 
I was surprised to see that my local cinema was showing The Terminator last night, not the shit one, the original.

Obviously went to watch it and the place was packed! Great to experience that movie at the cinema.

Leviathan: Bleak, beautifully shot, solidly scripted and brilliantly acted. I’m not sure enjoyable is the word I’d use to describe this so much as engrossing, but there is something to be said for the enjoyment of watching something this well put together even if it leaves you with an empty and slightly depressed feeling once it is over. Not for a moment does it feel like you’re watching something that is anything less than completely authentic. Simply put a brilliant well told but depressing story about power, corruption and life for those on the receiving end of it.

Slow West has more than a few clunky lines, and is occasionally too pleased with itself but its darkly funny, has some beautiful visuals (New Zealand, bring your mum) and some good performances. Its got a world worth spending time in and deserves to be given a look.

I really enjoyed it. It's so lightweight (about 84 minutes I think) and the showdown is pleasingly brief and dark.

:lol:That thread was an epic. As a hint, it's a great thread but the last 10 pages can be avoided- just people bickering about whether posters were ripping him too much.
 
I actually haven't seen a film in about a month, where I fell asleep watching The Double. That's depressing.

About to watch Jaws, cause it's so hot, and yakno, it's Jaws.
