Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Mockingbird

Three set of people: a woman, a couple, and a man who lives with his mother are mysteriously given large bulky VHS cameras (it takes place in 1995) on their doorsteps and told to "keep filming." In addition the man is told has been entered in a contest where he can win 10 thousand dollars.

Found Footage isn't exactly my cup of tea but this sounded pretty original and I had heard some good things about it. OMG was I mislead, this was a huge disappointment and left me pretty pissed off that I had sat through it all.
Dreadful film, did nothing to change my mind out found footage films.

2/10

There are some decent found footage films. Have you tried these?

Grave Encounters
The Taking Of Deborah Logan
[REC] (original spanish one)
Afflicted
Troll Hunter

Who Shot Roger Rabbit

Hadn't watched this in years. Such a great film. Loads of laughs, definitely not a kids film which is why it wouldn't have mass appeal I think if released today. Decent detective story too. Jessica Rabbit, for a cartoon is so fit. Would love a sequel of this if done in the right way. However it probably would be way too much 3Dness to the cartoons and very childish unfortunately.

Some of the shorts were very good, but some not so good. Still an interesting couple of films.

I remember the short set in Indonesia in that cult thing was creepy as hell.
Yes Safe Heaven was great and co-directed by the director of The Raid. Very tense, loved it. Watched VHS Viral. Boy was that a pile of shit. Every story in that one was a complete joke.

Van Sant claims that his remake of Psycho should be seen as a creative rather than commercial endeavor. As he states in his commentary to the DVD edition of Psycho, he had been toying with the idea for several years, and one motivation was to renew its appeal for the younger generation.

That seems fair enough, chief.

It's a shot for shot remake, so it's an odd one to appraise. All down to whether you like the performances. None of them are better than the original though.

I think there are a few remakes of Hitchcock films out there. Compared to other filmmakers his films sort of pass the remake test. Just because his films have always been labelled as run of the mill "thriller/suspense" movies. Which sucks because his films are so much more than that.

Slow West

Loved it. Still chewing it all over in my brain. Can't work out if the creator
is a glass is half empty kind of guy or not.

Deborah Logan and REC were fantastic! Really enjoyed Rec in particular. Typical of Hollywood though they take the idea and make a very poor version of it.

What do you guys make of this? Bay is producing a remake of The Birds. I am just glad he isn't directing himself.

http://screencrush.com/the-birds-remake-director/

That scene at the start where Tippi Hedren is driving along that winding road and the birds lean in their cage will end up amazing in Bayovision.

The scene opens with Hedren's character driving down the winding road, birds leaning in the cage as per the original, but wait! There are explosions in the background and erupting volcanoes spewing lava all over the road behind the car. What's that? It's Nic Cage on the back of a Giant Eagle spewing fire from its majestic golden beak. Nic Cage screams from his mounted sky beast "Release the birds, or my fury will consume the land" Hedren's character looks skywards and gives Cage and his fiery Eagle the middle finger. That's when Bayovision is unleashed and bird related carnage hits the cinema screen so hard, it makes Fury Road look like The Room.

Every person that owns a pet bird is marked for death, every zoo, aviary and pet shop is set to be destroyed.

Nobody knew why the birds went mental in the original, but now they know and they will never forget. Nic Cage is the birdmaster, and he wants to set them free!

Epic!

Gets a 10/10 from me :lol::lol:

The Devils Hand.

When young girls start to go missing within a religious cult, older followers fear a long-told prophecy while the younger members suspect abusive elders are killing them off.
This was better than I expected, Colm Meany playing an evil elder was pretty good.
Did not see the twist at the end but should of done really.
A mediocre horror film with some good ideas, as well as the unusual combination of a hooded killer and supernatural phenomenons.

5/10

Demon Baby

A young couple looking to rekindle a damaged relationship retreat to the remote Scottish Highlands. They are haunted by their past, their surroundings and each other.
A low budget film set in Scotland, that was a bit strange, could not see a real story behind it and the title is very misleading, you don't see a baby in it, yes she is pregnant but thats it.
The views are decent , the music is very eerie and the actors do OK with what they were given.
If you like films with no visible plot and a few ghosts thrown in you may like it, but I would not bother to be honest.

Good Will Hunting

Had surprisingly never seen this, although was meaning to watch it for a while after Robin Williams' death last year. Really enjoyed it. Williams is excellent, and Damon was very good too. Even though the fairly feel good ending at the end was fairly predictable, it could be forgiven since the characters were enjoyable and the dynamics between them were interesting.

Stung

This is a film about 7 foot wasps, I shit you not 7 foot wasps with intelligence.
When I read what it was about I just had to watch it and it was not has bad as I was expecting.
Some comedy, some horror and even a love interest.
The CGI is rubbish , the story could of been decent, if done has a pure horror and had some money thrown at it, basicly wasps lay eggs i some super fertilizer laced with growth hormones used to grow weed, hatch and kill everything in sight.
Watch out for the cows at the end

Inside Out

I think the magic of Pixar has worn off for me. Been some time since I saw so much schmaltz in a film. A formulaic, feel good, skim through some cliches and an occasional nugget.

Could be the age.

Slow West

Great film. Nice relaxed mood with some dark humour thrown in as well. Also it looks gorgeous and the music fitted perfectly. It did seem to be conveying a strange message which I haven't come across very often in films.

Haha. Yeah. That's one way of putting it.

One Hour Photo - 7/10
Enjoyed watching this quick yet well made thriller. Robin Williams is great in this. The director is very efficient in the moving the story along. Lingering only on scenes/moments which contribute or progress the story. I wonder how a current audience would react to such a film. Because even though it is a crime/thriller story, I sort of had a strong sense of what is going to happen next. But I still enjoyed it. Definitely worth a watch! Robin Williams:(

Poltergeist (2015)

Has a remake of a classic film , it was better than I expected.
They kept the "There Here" line in and if the girl playing Madison had blonde hair , she would of been the double of Heather O'Rourke.
I liked the humour that was injected into the film and I thought Jared Harris was excellent.
I did think the film rushed everything, I watched the original not long ago and everything happened a bit slower in that one with more build up, one thing that did disappoint me was there was no face peeling scene, this one just did not work , well not for me was just not scary.
Overall a watchable remake but could of done better,

It Follows
I can see why a lot of people don't like this but I thought it was pretty good. It isn't really scary but extremely creepy and atmospheric which a very good plot. The acting was excellent and I loved the use of music. However, you have to look past a LOT of plot holes/inconsistencies otherwise you will hate it 7.5/10

I agree with this, one of the better horrors of the last decade for me, low budget and very well acted despite the actors not being too recognizable if at all. The film did have me gripped especially with the use of the atmospheric sound track and grimy settings and despite the simplistic plot it really made me think what would I do as nailing everyone to pass it on kind of proved unsuccessful...flying across the world would probably have help mind
