Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Come on now, it is a sci-fi movie based on a sci-fi book. It wasn't supposed to be scientifically accurate. Well, for most part it wasn't supposed to be so. When it comes to HAL, I think that Kubrick and Clarke (writer of the book) had a conversation with Marven Minsky (back then, the leading researcher in AI) about that part. I think that HAL part are some of the best pieces that have been ever done in cinematography.

From Kubrick's movies (I know that you dislike them), only Dr. Strangelove is clearly better.

I like Dr Strangelove even less. The scientific inaccuracy I can live with - most sci-fi is rubbish in this respect anyway - the pretentious existential bollocks is what really pisses me off.

What I'm trying to show you is that the premise of the story is very old and has been used in multiple movies. The white (american) comes to an Indigenious (Indian/Mayan/Aztec/WildWest/Japanese/Cambodia/Vietnam/etc) and somehow the good american becomes sympathetic with them, married one of their girls and fought their war against fellow bad ass American (often portrayed as cruel/barbaric/etc)

Dances with wolves, Poca Hontas, the Last Samurai, are the most similiar plotted movie. Apart from the cinematography and visual feast the movie itself is pretty much cliche ridden.

Yeah I know but what I'm saying is I obviously didn't know this premise had been used before because I hadn't seen the films that had this premise in it.

Haven't seen Pocahontas?

Na.

Na.
Avatar is a nice looking (But fake) film with a pretty generic plot and decent action sequences. About a 6/7 for the visuals mainly and that tree collapsing in 3D.

Liar Liar

Extremely funny film, loved every second of it and reminds me of how good Jim Carrey is when he brings his A game.

9/10

Ghost

Whoopi Goldberg is hilarious in this film, and it's a nice concept. It's one of those films which is sad but also leaves you feeling happy, which is a credit to the film, very entertaining.

9/10

The Philadephia Story - Batshit crazy. I refuse to believe that people might have ever behaved like that. But anyway, I doubt that was the point. A highly entertaining movie which made me laugh a lot and really enjoyed it. Fantastic performances by James Stewart and Cary Grant. Katharine Hepburn was great although at times annoying considering that she didn't stopped talking for a single second.

Great movie. 9/10

I enjoyed Prometheus, yeah it was a full of clichés and what not but I like the whole Giger thing.

Shawshank Redemption

Let's be honest, it's the perfect movie.

10/10

Predestination - I think my expectations were too high going into this, as the whole thing felt a bit underwhelming. The whole thing is totally preposterous, and not just the story - the acting, the set-up, the pacing, the fact the film has "twists" that are far too obvious to be twists, and aren't really played as twists, and yet sort of are still twists.... it's all just a bit bizarre.

Yeah I was disappointed by it, it was just so ridiculous.
nothing wrong with Shawshank, an excellent film.
Quite a few on here really do hate it.
I don't think people actually hate it, it just annoys them it's ranked so high and rated as one of the best films ever. And therefore, in the tradition of this thread, they go to the other extreme.

Well, I was expecting it to be completely crap! As Keenst said it looked fantastic, so what it clearly lacked in originality (let's be honest, it couldn't have been any less original and clichéd) it made up visually. It was also pretty atmospheric. Anyway, Giger is dead who's going to do the art work and designs for Prometheus 2?

So there you go, yesterday I enjoyed Prometheus.

yeah fair point on both counts, it is hard to believe that for 20+ years he was digging and it was only covered up by a poster and the sewage pipe thing was just daft.
I'm fairly certain, considering the rock was crumbling away, at some point he would have had a cave in and died. Like you said, the sewage is ridiculous.

The Box

Very interesting film with a unusual concept. A family get delivered a box that if they press the button inside the box they will earn a million dollars, but someone who they don't know will die. Not gonna lie the film is sometimes confusing but it always kept my attention. This was due to creepiness of the whole thing as well as the very good performances. Cameron Diaz imo was very good, despite being more of a comedy star. Despite the premise maybe more fiction than non-fiction the family's activities and what happens to them is very real, with the performances of all the family really highlighting this.

Not really a film you may have heard of, but if you watch it'll defiantly get your attention and you might even like it.

7/10

It drags a bit to be honest. Also, I refuse to believe his escape plane worked.

tbh the tunnel he has to build isn't that long if i remember. I do agree with you though that the covering it up with the poster is improbable, but improbable things happen.

I also refuse to believe there was enough thunder that night to create a hole large enough in the sewage pipe.

Yeah it looks superb, but my gripe with it is... it makes no sense. The characters do stuff that makes no sense, that is not coherent, that is actually the total opposite of what you'd expect them to do given what we've seen of them. It's so ludicrous.

You're not wrong but I'm cheap, films that may be ludicrous...yet look visually fantastic keep me interested. Thing is films are a visual medium so perhaps we have to factor in aesthetics when they're reviewed.

Oh you do have to, I agree, and the aesthetics give Prometheus a very watchable quality, but the nonsense is just too much in the end. Well, for me.

I had to study this film for my media class. It was alright I suppose, albeit a bit ridiculous.

Sounds like a Twilight Zone episode i saw years ago, they made a full length film of this??

I have seen this, I liked it, thought the ending was very good.

Agree with Spoony, I enjoyed Prometheus aswell. Underrated film and also one that is cool to hate for some bizarre reason.

Was alright for a 10-15min piece, if somewhat ridiculous.

How they'd make a full length 'serious' film out of it i find hard to comprehend.

Yeah you would think so, but as I said the performances and the way it's directed (same guy who directed Donny Darko) gives it a realistic feel despite it's very strange plot. It's very interesting and even if you don't think it's anything special, it will defiantly be a good time killer.

The African Queen - it bored the hell out of me, but it had brilliant acting from both great actors. Especially from Bogart who was in an uncharacteristic role. 7/10

Yep. It also suffered from being in the same universe as Alien/Aliens, and so being compared with two movies who are superior in every aspect.

The plotline while had potential was absolutely awful. And why on hell did Charlize Theron run striaght? Just looked at my imdb profile and saw that I had given 6/10 a few years ago. For a movie that I watched in cinema, that is terrible. I even rated the awful Interstellar a bit higher.

Its not hated because its cool to do so, its hated because its a genuinely terrible film.

There isn't a single character in Prometheus who makes a common sense decision at any point during the film.

For a science fiction movie there is a complete lack of Scientific thinking at any point during the film from any character on screen.

The twists manages to be even more stupid than any of the other numerous jumbled plot points littered throughout the film and had I not seen Noomi Rapace in the Swedish TV version of Girl With The Dragon Tattoo I would seriously suspect that she was a terrible actress as opposed to one being fed crappy dialogue which is the case all around in this movie.

An absolutely dire film.

Well, I guess the caf knows better than the thousands of people and critics who gave it a positive review on RT, imdb and Metacritic.

There are unusually high standards (compared to the general public) in this thread, and I think that's a good thing. And as far as I can tell, the good critics have praised some of the performances and the production values rather than the script.
