Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Jurassic World - Finally got around to watching this and yeah it's a bit pants.

The Walk: There's a place in the world for Zemeckis cheesiness, and this could have been a reasonably charming and exhilarating film, but it's completely killed by the constant narration. Damn near every scene is explained as it happens by Joseph Gordon Levitt and his cartoon character French accent.

Saw it last night and I loved it. It had a charm to it, the last 20 or so minutes were stunning to watch. And it was just nice seeing the Twin Towers again. Was only up in NYC for 30 or years but a huge part of its skyline. Really enjoyed the movie.

I'm sure there's plenty for whom the film works like gangbusters, there were definitely lots of gasps in the cinema I was in and some tears from someone a few rows down from me, but every time something happened and in came that voiceover going "ohoho zis is exactly what I was feeling is zis scene mah friends, ooh la la" it took me out of it. Let me figure it out for myself Zemeckis!

The Martian

Watched it last night. Really enjoyed it. For some reason I had low expectations for it for some reason but yeah that was brilliant. Went in thinking that it would be inferior to Interstellar - now I'm not sure. Thought Damon was great. Loved the story, and it probably came as a better watch for me as I've never even heard of the book before so I had no idea what would happen and how things turned out.

Probably deserves more superlatives in this review but I'm a bit tired  Still it's definitely worth the watch and in terms of enjoyment (if you enjoy the sciency stuff) then I'd give it a solid 8/10. Maybe even a 9.

I saw it last night as well. For a film over two hours long, focusing on a guy stranded on a planet on his own, it didn't drag. The pacing was really good, I felt. It'd be Damon coming to grips with survival for ten minutes maybe, then back to earth to see what's going on at NASA, then back to him again. I was never thinking "when's this gonna end?" The computer logs he kept helped enormously. It enabled the viewer to understand his mindset and emotions at the time. It was like an old theatre trick where the actor is alone on stage and turns to the audience to give an 'aside'.

I think there was a fair bit of cheesy dialogue, and Jeff Daniels probably came right off the set of The Newsroom to deliver his lines, but blockbusters are always remembered for their one liners, so it didn't detract from the overall experience.

Definitely well worth watching:

8/10

The Martian - It's very well made, but I was bored at parts and felt the large majority of the jokes fell flat. The soundtrack was also not remarkable at all. I expected more, still a decent watch. 7/10

The martian- i enjoyed this alot, have not read the book so dont know wat wqs missing but i liked matt damon in this, the possitivity of whatney really comes out from matt. Movie shows what a good script director and a good actor can oull off, given that it was a movie about man stuck on a planet alone. 8/10 from me.

Going to watch The walk in an hour, lets see how this one fares as it has mixed reviews that i have read here.

Beasts of No Nation - Absolutely brilliant. A must-see. Loved the score, too.

The Walk
Was really looking forward to this film for a long time. It starts off slowly, which was great as it allows you to get to know the character and builds the narrative well. Joseph Gordon Levitt is superb in the lead role and really adds charm and charisma to the film. The build up to the walk was also excellent. Never feels boring and really gets you in the mood for the finale. However, the final walk scene wasn't what I expected from the trailer. I expected it to be super atmospheric and instead it focused more on the beauty of the act rather than tension. It was filmed well but the high stakes didn't seem to be explored in the kind of detail I expected. It just fell a little flat (pun unintended) in it's main act. Still, worth a watch, but definitely one that is worth watching on the big screen 7/10

Went to see Sicario this morning, overall I think I enjoyed it but it's not as good as I hoped. The actors are all very good, Benicio del Toro especially, and the subject matter is interesting, but Villeneuve has a tendency to rely too much on the scenes where he builds up tension (which he does rather well) and the scenes in between can at times come across as filler.

Still an enjoyable film to watch but not very memorable.

Having read the book i feel i can be that annoying guy who fixes his glasses while snorting "the book was better". That said up until the ending i thought it was one of the best book-movie adaptations i've ever seen. Certain things were omitted because it worked better as a book but overall i was really pleased with it... All until the last 15 minutes, ignoring that i would have given the movie a solid 8/10. With the ending i would bring it down to a 6/10. I just think the book did it better, the movies ending was far to Hollywood for my liking...

In the book Lewis doesnt leave her post to save Watney and Watney doesnt cut a hole in the suit to get rescued. In the book this worked well and in a movie it would have too.

In the book, while Lewis felt guilty about leaving him behind she did all she could to get him back (ie deciding to go back, blowing a hole in the front of the ship to act as a air break) but she wasnt qualified to go EVA and get him, so she didnt. She left it for Beck. In the movie its established how good Beck is at going EVA because he traverses the ship without a guide line effortlessly, never was this established for Lewis. I found that switch up really out of character and thought it was typical Hollywood BS, "Commander left a crewman behind so they have to be the one to get them back - screw the fact that she isnt qualified as EVA expert, like Beck, she has to save the a man she left behind (god dam it)!".

I thought the movie itself was well grounded in science. But the whole 'cutting a hole in my suit to fly like Iron Man' was stupid. I liked how the book set up how Watney spent his entire time on Mars looking out for himself but at this point he had to rely solely on his crew because he couldnt do anything - in the book they discounted the Iron Man idea because it was f***ing stupid. But in typical Hollywood fashion (again), "It doesnt matter if you cant control your vector in space with air escaping from a space suit and it not very scientific... He wants to be saved that bad (god dam it)." Summary: in the book the crew saved him by figuring it out. In the movie he had to take it on himself to save himself.

The final passage of the book has a really good closing line about humans innate ability/willingness to help people who are in need, it was probably too cheesy for a movie but i thought the end scene when hes talking to the astronaut hopefuls would have been a great opportunity for it but alas. I'm probably nit picking, I went with a few friends who hadnt read the book and they loved it. As did i, except for the ending

Appreciate the comparison. Cheers!

The Martian - highly enjoyable, totally cheesy. The basic bitch of movies.

I liked it too, pretty good feel good movie, a little too jazzed/hyped up in places and unrealistic as a result (the overall premise, and the way that it handles the media interactions etc) but it is clearly going for a feel good, slightly quirky vibe which works as it is helped by the soundtrack. Good light-hearted entertainment.

7/10 would bang.

Hannah and Her Sisters (1986)

9/10

Red Riding Trilogy: 1980
(2001)

7/10

Can't help but think they did that soundtrack after Guardians of the Galaxy, but could be an overly cynical thought!

Haven't read the book so no idea what liberties were taken but as a film, it was really good. Matt Damon is on point as usual and the tone of the film was perfect, expertly switching between comedy and drama. Thought it was a tad too long and the ending was a bit cheesy but regardless, it was still a really enjoyable watch 8/10

Downloaded the theatrical version of the OG Star Wars movies because I've never seen them before, watched A New Hope, enjoyed it, but one thing that really bugged me was Luke's non reaction to the charred skeletal remains of his uncle and auntie. Like dude, at least shed a tear, but nooooo, instead he leaves with plant AND FECKING STAR SYSTEM!! with a potential pedophile and/or serial killer who admittedly changed his name so no one would find him. Suspicious? You bet that's suspicious.

Another thing was pretty hilarious was Vader's silly chestpiece and his guards with their silly helmets.

@Anustart89

Does the first few seconds of this video remind you of something?

A Most Violent Year

Really enjoyed this, excellent film. I'd watch Oscar Isaac read the dictionary.

Also would kill for his wardrobe in this.

Bronson

Weird movie. It's definitely a Tom Hardy wankfest. A lot of scenes involving him instigating fights with the prison guard. In fact that and Tom Hardy talking to the screen is the whole movie. I had no idea who this guy was before watching this so that didn't affect me at all. I could have just stopped typing after wankfest. This is a great Tom Hardy performance, intense movie and memorable in that way that Hardy is crazy, huge, nude guy beating other people up and getting beaten but it wasn't that great.

6/10

Possibly yeah, I haven't read the book so I don't know if any of the disco tracks are referenced but it does have the same fun and cheesy vibe to it.
I think they do, there's quite a few references to pop culture and I believe he listens to disco because one of the other crew members is a fan (the captain maybe?).

Yup. Listening to disco is the only entertainment he has for the duration of his stay. It's a recurring theme in the novel. The music is left behind on a flash drive that was owned by another crew member.

Winter Sleep - Nuri Bilge Ceylan (2014)

Palme d'Or winning film by Turkish master Nuri Bilge Ceylon. Very heavy dialogue driven which may not be everyone´s cup of tea, but fantastically shot around the beautiful region of Cappadocia, which in and of itself becomes a sort of protagonist to accompany this existential exercise of class and relationships. Absolute top rate directing and acting as well. I´d say the length of the film and its slight fall into melodrama at the end were the only things stopping this from being a total masterpiece. It was a good idea to watch it in two sittings. Ceylon Bilge has to be considered among today´s most transcendent film directors.
