Vertonghen has been by far our best defender for over a year now. You clearly have not watched us much.
I have seen enough of him to see that he gets beaten for pace far too often. Something which din't happen 2-3 seasons back even when he played LB.
Him and Alderweireld will need replacing within the next two summers.

I honestly don't think you have a clue what you are talking about sorry. The only central defender we have with pace is Sanchez. you don't need real pace to be a top class centre-back, you need excellent anticipation and positioning which is what Vertonghen and Alderweireld have in abundance. Alderweireld is 28 years old and Vertonghen is 30 years old. Both entering their prime as defenders. You talk like they are both in their mid 30's. Try harder.

What part of Alderweireld wants to leave cant you understand. You sound terribly defensive about an obvious problem area in your team. Guess that's why few spurs posters on here are well known for posting delusional stuff.

Lets wait and see if he signs a new contract first before making assumptions. Show me a quote from him that says he wants to leave? I'm not being defensive, I'm pointing out that you are making false or inaccurate statements.

Haha, clueless! Vertonghen is quality, he doesn't need pace with such outstanding positioning and reading of the game. They (Alderweireld and Vertonghen) are both the best CBs in the league and have proved it for the past 3 seasons.

Sanchez is 21 and is already a key part of this Spurs side and tonight in Dortmund was quality.

Really great achievement for the team to come top of that group. A group that in all honesty I didn't give us much hope of qualifying from.

10 points out of 12 against Real and Dortmund's ridiculously good. Some campaign for them thus far.

Nice strawman. My first post clearly mentions the problem with Alderweireld's situation. Keep digging deeper and deeper holes for your argument.

If we waited to let things unfold then 90% of threads on this forum will be meaning less.

Putting your head in the sand doesn't generally help but as you please.

What situation? He just hasn't yet signed a contract extension, i'm not overly concerned about that as I expect him to sign at some point. It is you that is making a mountain out of a molehill. Please back up your argument with some facts because so far all I've read has been assumptions, conjecture and poor judgement re: rating central defenders.

Read my first post will you. Are you denying that Alderweireld is refusing to sign a contract for want of ore money? Height of denial.

Lived around a ton of Spurs fans all my life, half my friends growing up were Spuds, happy to see those type of fans getting to enjoy it all.
Now if i'd never heard of Glaston id be able to enjoy it all the more with them.. alas.

'refusing' to sign a contract or 'still negotiating'? Your use of language is suggestive. Again, please link me to a quote from the player that suggests he will not sign a contract. If you are unable to do this then please do be quiet.

Sky Sports News reporter said that Son Heung Min scored against his former club hahaha. I mean how incompetent can you get?

You do not realise the stupidity in telling someone to "be quite" on a discussion forum do you?

His agent had clearly stated that he wants either a bigger contract or a transfer. Google it for yourself.

I don't think Toby wants to leave he wants more money, we're not in a position where we have to sell just yet. As others have said, if you don't rate Vertongen on the basis of the last to seasons I honestly don't know what or you your watching he has been our best CB.

So far Sanchez looks like the real deal, took to the league so well considering his age. We have Carter-Vickers also who is performing well. Honestly have more worrying positions than CB in our squad.

Knowing how Levy operates with regards to the contracts (extending them very early) signs are ominous with regards to Alderweireld's situation. Sanchez is great but CCV is atleast two seasons away from being a PL top 4 player and Foyth is even further away.

Fair play to them, I didn't give them a chance when he group was drawn.

I don't think Pochettino agrees with you there. CCV went out on loan whilst Foyth usurped his position in the squad.

Personally from what I've seen so far I don't think CCV will make it at Spurs. Way too early to judge Foyth though.

As for our centre half situation, I am comfortable. Vertonghen has been superb of late and because he is a player who never relied on athleticism he could play for another two or three seasons. Dier has looked very good at centre half this year and is still young. Sanchez has bedded in well. Alderweireld still has two and a half years left to run. If it gets to a stage where there is only a year to go then he'll already be at an age where he will struggle to get a move to a bigger club. If he is still performing excellently and does get that move then Spurs will still make decent money on him.

Two or three years is a LONG time in football. So worrying about ifs and maybes is pointless. That said I would like Spurs to buy a left footed centre half to cover for Vertonghen.......

No doubt Toby wants more money but I think next season we will definitely see a wage restructuring. It all really depends how much he is wanting, no doubt he will have a lot of suitors, but we are under no pressure to sell. We are in a different era now, clubs don't have to sell, but honestly I'm always of the opinion if the player wants to go sell him and make sure you get the maximum possible. Given his age and contract situation if he was to go it would be a massive fee.

Is there not a rumour about a £25m release fee this summer?

I think it has expired, but honestly I'm not sure. If there was one I'm sure it would have been activated by now, could be completely wrong though.

Hopefully for United sake there is and we activate it as he's the best defender in the league imo.

That Sanchez looks a very good signing.

That's fair enough. Though in my opinion, till the stadium is done spurs will continue with near zero net spend and controlled wages.

I honestly have no problem with the net spend, but think wages should definitely increase due to the increased income. Obviously a capital spend such as transfers will have to be curtailed but honestly our net spend over the last 5 seasons has been low.

There's no release fee in his contract at this point.
However, it expire in the summer of 2019 and that's where the release clause comes in, as Spurs have an option to extend his contract, if they do the clause will be activated.

Spurs are the money ball equivalent of the Oakland A's.They will win f##k all but you have to respect their achievements in the league and CL(this season) from their net spend..... They have the best management and directors in Europe.

Ah ok.

He's what 28 so he'll be 30 then? Would still be worth the £25m if anyone wanted him. Reckon if he went before then Spurs would want 50m.

I highly doubt that as it would be against common sense. CCV is out on loan because he needs regular playing time where as Foyth is not yet at that stage. Very similar to Chelsea having Kyle Scott in the squad but sending Loftus Cheek out on loan.

No. Poch loans out youngsters he is unsure about and keeps the ones he really rates close to him so he can work with them himself on the training ground.

It's why Winks in in the first team squad and why Onomah is on loan at Villa.

It's why CCV is on loan and Foyth is in the first team squad and has made appearances for Spurs in the cups.

By all accounts Foyth was pursued personally by Poch all summer. It's more than certain Poch rates him higher than CCV

Winks is not a comparable player. He player 20+ games last season and has played in most of the games this season as well.

Dortmund's defense was pretty poor, but fair play to Spurs, I only seen the second half, was watching the RM game until it became a non contest. I thought Son looked lively and Alli was always a threat but seemed heavily marked, maybe it was just the fact there was so many bodies in midfield. Kane was Kane, defense stood off him for a second and 1-1 Spurs.

That Llorente miss/chance at the end

Until the beginning of last season Ononah was the more talked about young talent at Spurs and Winks asked to go out on loan as he wasn't getting any minutes. Poch said no you can't go on loan I want you here with me.

Just go and google the numerous quotes where it says Poch doesn't loan out the players he rates highest.

Pointless distraction though. I am quite sure neither of those two defenders are good enough to reach 10 league game over the next two seasons.

Not a great result for them yesterday. Spurs seem to be struggling with two games a week.

Spurs manager apparently said that their title charge is over or something similar.

Imagine Mourinho saying that before it's even December? He'd be battered.

Spurs are so Spursy.
