The country needs to be split up into 3 regional groupings for it to be functional again. West, Central and Eastern regions. Its already voting like that. Like an EU super-grouping.
Its just outgrown its 50 state-federated system. It's all gridlock now. And no accountability.

If the Constitution weren't fundamentally flawed to the advantage of Republicans, there would be some hope for the future. As is, they will be able to either maintain control of the federal government with minorities of support or hold enough power in the Senate to block Democrats from doing anything in the event they lose the White House and both houses of Congress. The Senate broadly and filibuster specifically, with Joe Manchin and Kyrsten Sinema's slavish devotion to it, are destroying America.
Republicans will never agree to any functional changes that degrade their power so we are stuck until it reaches some dramatic breaking point that may never come. Even if there were mass protests and strikes, Republicans wouldn't care because they'd all happen in cities where Republican voters don't live. January 6th should've been an inflection point to defend democracy, but it has been one for the death of democracy in America.

I believe the House has already passed a bill legalizing abortion at the federal level. Now is the put up or shut up time. Put it on the floor in the Senate and do a roll vote. Support for Roe polls at around 70%, so make the Senate vote on it. It will be filibustered, so make the Senate vote on that to. Get the votes on record.

They already did. It was defeated 46-48. Manchin won't support it, and there's no way that Murkowski or Collins will support changing the filibuster and passing the bill. Sinema won't vote to change the filibuster either, which is why I included both of them. Murkowski depends on Democrats and independents to win, and Collins is old enough she should probably retire, but neither of them has the spine to stand up for what they believe in when it comes to women's rights.
sure, but that was a “consequence free” vote as Roe was in place and could be spin as such. Now it is for real. I am sadly quite sure it would fail again, but maybe it helps win one more seat in 2022.

The Republicans are evil, but the Democrats have had decades to make sure it's passed into law (like every other first-world country, and many of the others). This is just the logical consequence of the supremely fecked American system of governance. First past the post + winner takes all, the electoral college, judicial supremacy, filibuster, and everything else.

It was RBG replacement that really swung the needle. Conservatives had majority of 5-4 before Scalia's death anyway and at best McConnell ensured that advantage was maintained. Kennedy just retired so that a conservative President could replace him, he would not have never done so under Dem presidency.
Supposed conservative "moderates" like Roberts ensured that SC still did not undertake loony decisions like this. But now with 6-3 conservative majority post RBG, all bets seem to be off.
Secretly Dems would be giddy at this turn of events. This possibly the only way they have a shot at winning mid terms now. Dem base is going to be off the charts angry at this. Hence why they never codified this. It has been one of the best ways for them to fundraise.
That's true, but it doesn't do much to change the realities "on the ground". Unless they make gains in the mid-terms and actually codify it into law this time. It sounds unlikely, but maybe the end of Roe v Wade could be the catalyst for it.
The political climate will almost certainly change after yesterday's news, so it would make a lot of sense for the Dems to try again to get everyone on record, then use all of it to mobilize for Nov.
Independents also will be aggrieved. Those are the key.
I remember one of my American professors at UvA once saying to us that he didn't expect the US as a nation- state to survive our lifetimes. Too many internal contradictions. This was all the way back in 2005 mind you so most of us students were pretty skeptical of his claim.

Back to the US, I just don't see how the country doesn't rip itself apart with the culture wars going on. The sides are too far apart to ever meet on common ground again. The right is too far gone, without any shred of common sense remaining.
Agreed. There will be a schism at some point in the future, probably on the right since many of their old guard are dying off and not getting replenished by new voters. The Dems are also a mess but not nearly as bad as the right.
And the left are doing a great job. Nice to see the Ministry of Truth becoming a thing.
If it does split inot two/three nation states, you’re going to end up with an extremely prosperous liberal nation state and an extremist, regressive nation state with a tiny economy.
Honestly, I don’t think Republican politicians are stupid enough to break away from the states which financially support their own - maybe I’m wrong to underestimate their stupidity, you’d think I’d know better.

As we have seen, especially in the last 6 years, the GOP is a party of grievance and "culture wars". In 2020 there was no platform, literally. I would venture to guess that deep down almost all GOP politicians are unhappy with a complete repeal of Roe as is removes one of their strongest go-to topics. Unfortunately I think this means we are in for an escalation with LGBTQ+ rights, especially marriage, up next. They have no choice at this point as their only plan is to continue to increase their bases addiction to grievance.
My belief is that its the blue states that will one day say pheck it, we're out of here. And the breakup will not be into a red vs blue, but 5 or 6 blocks. I can totally see Texas going alone.
If the blue states initiate it, you’ll have civil war, terrorism and guerrilla warfare in a very short period of time as many of the red states slip into abject poverty without the blue state funded federal handouts.

All of that in the name of "the good old days", which is utter ignorance when a small knowledge of history tells any of us that evolution is always a necessary thing. Some things belong to be buried forever because those are just wrong as we evolve.
Or else the progress we thought was made was merely a perceptual illusion based on how we obtain information these days (which is usually news and social media feeds that support and reinforce conclusions we would like to see in the world).
In either case, change rarely happens in a linear way. Two steps forward, one step back and all.
