Wayne Rooney withdraws from England squad, minor knee injury

I've completely come round to the idea that Rooney is a massive piss-head. There's been the perennial slow starts to ever season, the pints he was drinking while sitting in the exec box during a United game (when did you last see a professional athlete skulling pints, mid-afternoon, in the middle of a campaign?) the game where him and Gibson were dropped after apparently turning up unfit to train after a night out, then I heard a rumour from a friend who knows a "fixer" in New York that said Rooney went on a monstrous bender during his brother's stag (again, mid-season) and now you've got all the stuff from this week. All in the context of a footballer who is declining, physically, much younger than you would typically expect. I mean, join the dots. It's a real shame but he's got nobody to blame but himself. Funny Fergie put up with it so long, after the way he dealt with Whiteside and McGrath, but I guess you have to make exceptions for the really special talents in the hope they will eventually get their shit together. Looks like he was running out of patience at the end, though. How long before Mou does the same?

I have mentioned exactly this numerous times over the years. Don't forget he was bombed out of the squad under Van Gaal after apparently turning up pissed / failing a piss test. Just the fact he was piss tested for booze by the club should raise alarm bells. Its the only explanation for me and it seems so obvious too.

That's news to me. When did that happen?

Was the source at the wedding a Mr Esoj Ohniruom?
It's not his fault guys, move on

Absolutely laughable.

Proof, if it were still needed, of certain journalist's incredible bias towards Rooney.

Just out of interest, did he already know at this point he wouldn't be playing the Spain game? Southgate only confirmed this on the Monday. In which case, the journalists saying '7 days before his next game' is a load of biased horse shite.

That Sky article says he was training Sunday and that's when the injury was discovered.

So he was hammered just a few hours before an international practice. I've seen so many journalists and others writing on twitter that Rooney is being hung out to dry unfairly, what a load of bollocks. Surely you can see that this was not a good time for an allnighter.
If that's the mentality in England then there's no chance they'll improve as an international side any time soon.

We need to move on from this guy, he simply presents quite a few problems and not many positives.

These blood red headlines are usually raw meat for the Rooney temperament.

We know he's been a busted flush for years - but the only interest we have on these boards is that, if picked, the fading beast gives everything this Saturday lunchtime for the cause.

That is all that matters. If he contributes, then I'll take stories like this every week - because the lad loves nothing more than the jump leads of heavy tabloid criticism to get him going.

He's got terrific form on that score. More please, until the farewell's and fake tears start circulating.

If he celebrates like this after beating Scotland, I dread to think what state he would be in if England actually won a tournament. Although I doubt it will happen while he is playing.

I don't think you get it also.
The least a £300k a week player can do is put himself in the best condition to play his best football.
I don't see how this helps him.

Playing through the alcohol barrier takes a real man.. Jose will definitely start him v Arsenal. Leadership material. Luke Shaw take note.

Instead of ticking over with exercise video's, Shaw needs to post videos of downing shots..

Hopefully he'll get a hat trick versus Arsenal, do a Paul Merson-esque chugging pints celebration in front of Sir Bobby and then jet straight out to the MLS.

That makes little sense especially given he isnt even a starter for England anymore.

Did he not start, the last (before Span) England game?
I don't watch internationals, so have no idea who we played before Spain.

Oh I get it. All that matters to me is United winning - and if negative headlines get the best out of him - as has been proven in the past - then that is the only thing that matters.

I think you've completely misuderstood my post. His 'condition' - which is already battered and bruised after years of top-level football - is not relevant to the point I'm making. I'm saying negative headlines generally get the best out of him. I think the Spurs game, under Van Gaal, (3-0 if I recall) proves this particular point.

Maybe he doesn't have the legs or dynamism to do this anymore but that's a different debate.

Anyone (I.e. the media) trying to justify a sportsman that earns £300k a week going out and get shitfaced during playing season needs a reality check.

I don't particularly think they should be drinking at all considering but there you go.

Laughable really. I don't believe these guys have ever been on a proper binge drinking session and tried to exercise in the 2-3 days after. It's hard enough playing Sunday league, never mind PL where a small percent drop in performance is significant. It's not the 70s/80s level of fitness anymore.

No excuse for the Manchester United and England captain to be getting hammered in the middle of international week. None whatsoever. His actions are inexcusable and unacceptable. I for one will celebrate the day this selfish p*ck will be out of our club.

We will still hear all this 'Rooney is 100% committed and loves the game' bollocks as well.

He loves playing football no more than your average Sunday league player does. If he can't sacrifice simple things like alcohol for the sake of his playing career then why is the feck doesn't he just retire and get pissed up every day.

Ronaldo may get a lot of stick for his ago but at least the guy is dedicated to his highly paid profession.

I reckon everyone's taking it too far, if I was stuck on England duty I'd want to be shitfaced as well.
As long as he's prepared for his next match then whilst it's not ideal it's not the worst thing in the world.
You're all just soft;)

It is about Rooney, you'd defend him if he set fire to an orphanage, he's captain for club and country and is currently being heavily criticised for his lack luster performances. What kind of mind set does that portray?

TBH, selfless act by Rooney, imagine the lives the kids would struggle through if Rooney didnt do that. True leadership.

I'm afraid for his health in 10 years time.

I seriously think he could become a bankrupt alcoholic.

I'm surprised by the number of people in here who are gullible enough to believe in everything the Sun prints. I guess it's the same reason that Trump won the election. If you have an agenda, you'll believe anything to support it no matter how tenuous.

I never believe the Sun, but that picture of Rooney, drunk, cannot be refuted.

Those pictures are pretty fecking shocking. You'd think that has to be curtains for his United career.

Unfortunately not.
He'll most likely be the first name on the team sheet for the Arsenal match.
Jose really needs to pluck up some courage against Rooney. Deal with him, once and for all.

Ibra is suspended for this game, so he was a nailed on starter after losing his place and he goes out and does this? This is what a 31 year old club and country captain does? fecking hell. We're paying him so much money for him to at least pretend he's a top footballer and he can't even do that.
Absolutely this. The lad is a fecking disgrace. He's struggling to get in the Utd team. Is lazy on the pitch, and he somehow thinks it's ok as England/Utd captain to gate crash a wedding and get shit faced in front of people he doesnt know? Guys a complete moron. Do this on your holidays fine, not when your team is struggling and relying on your leadership. What a joke of a captain.

Agreed. Completely ridiculous and, as someone said elsewhere, encapsulates the dinosaur mentality we have in England which places mindless buzzwords like 'passion' and 'pride' above proper preparation.

Everyone has to make sacrifices in their working life. For most people, those involve getting up at a reasonably early hour, going out to work in the wet and cold, sitting in traffic, putting up with annoying bosses/co-workers and doing menial stuff.

For footballers, the only real sacrifice is avoidance of beer and cigarettes. Rooney can't even do that.

His PR has come to say that Rooney is sad that his gesture of goodwill has been used against him. Apparently, he just took pictures with fans that asked for autographs...

...and fell into a pool of beer!
Ah so it's confirmed then. Taking no responsibility as usual. Fine example for our lads:rolleyes:

Something needs to be done to get him out of our club. Rooney out plane banner anyone? Protests?

It's so insulting to have your 250/300k a week professional athlete, nevermind captain of club and country behaving this way

This is a real chance for Jose to make a statement. Sadly I can still see him starting come the arsenal game.

What example is this setting?

Unfortunately not.

We'll see soon enough, I guess. It would be insanely hypocritical of him to publicly criticise the likes of Smalling, Shaw and Mkhitaryan for what he has and then overlook an indiscretion like this for Rooney though.

Keane admitted that his drinking was catching up with him and were a hindrance in terms of restitution etc. It's wildly unprofessional and frankly a disgrace in this day and age of sport science and marginal gains etc.

Is there anything on this forum that doesn't get described as "Disgraceful" or "Shocking."

The reason I brought up Keane was that it's now been decided you can't be a good captain and get drunk. Blatantly untrue.

There is some puritanical nonsense being spouted in this thread.

The worst part of modern day football is the ever increasing gap between fan and player. So when I see Rooney getting pissed like we might I quite like it. That's something I can relate to. The guys who live in their big glass houses, who never step foot into the city for which they play do nothing for me.

Think I'm going to be sick.
