Rooney Welbeck starting lineup for England in Euro 2012

ehs a facht

I think he's easily the best of the young English strikers to come through our youth system in recent years; the likes of Nardiello, Campbell, Johnson et al were never going to make it as they had obvious floors in either their technique or their physical stature or athletism. Wellbeck seems to be quick, good on the ball and pretty strong physically.

To be fair, although we all thought Rossi would easily make it, arguably Wellbeck has already out performed him in terms of first team appearances.

Remains to be seen how he develops and if he can cut it in the Premier League consistently but i'd say he's shown more than any other youth striker we've had in a long time.

Campbell hasn't failed yet. He could well make it ahead of Welbeck for all we know. It seems unlikely though at this stage I'll admit that.

Campbell's not good enough IMO, you could see it in the handful of appearances he made for us, and indeed what (little) he's done at Spurs.

He's not really strong or commanding enough, he's just quick. Think he will make a decent Premiership player but not sure beyond that.

Rossi scored on his first team debut just as Welbeck did. He scored in cup games too. The problem is he never got chances after that. He went out on loan to 2 clubs in 1 season and then when he came back he didnt want to fade into the background again.

So far Welbeck has slightly mirrored what happened with Rossi, but I'm not sure we'll be sending him out on loan next year.

I think Welbeck has a lot more to his game than Campbell has. He certainly has a lot more to his game than Campbell when he was 17. Campbell has one major advantage and that is his speed. The rest seems in favour of Welbeck. I think Danny has a much better chance at making it at Old Trafford than Campbell.

It's not just his ability, but it's his range of abilities that make him so promising.

Well that's the thing. His finishing seems to be so calm and assured for a 17 year old. The goal today and the goal agaisnt WBA seems to prove this. Fantastic prospect.

Hes still a teenager which is awesome as well. Lots of potential and has an eye for the goal.

He's just miles better at football than Campbell, Nardiello et al. It's not even close. He's streets ahead of them even now, let alone them at his age.

Only one mentioned who was close is Rossi, who was probably better technically, but Welbeck's got more of a chance at United because he has pace and is less lightweight (or will be). Also, Rossi actually turned out to be quite good.

Campbell's not good enough at football to play for United.

I think he is good enough to play for a top 4 team. Whether he's good enough to displace players like Tevez, Rooney, Berbatov and indeed Welbeck remains to be seen. I think he's capable of being Anelka standard with less moaning and a higher work rate though.

As someone who has been lauding this kid for a while now, I'll say nothing.

Agree with this.

all true.

though i don't think Rossi left because we didn't think he was good enough at the time. more like he didn't want to wait, and we already had a player in his position - just behind the striker. at the time, that was Rooney's role. then we went and got Tevez.

To be fair - it's not as if you've been the only one though. A lot of United fans have singled Welbck out as a real talent for a while now.

I'm just delighted that he's busy proving us all right

I didn't mean to say I was the only one. More as a veiled attack on those who considered Welbeck not very good or overrated.

welbeck is local so he'll be much more willing to stick around and pick up scraps for games...whereas rossi's main focus is to get games to develop to break into the azzuri set-up. i still hope we'll 'buy-back' rossi one day but i think its safe to say that welbeck will develop better at united than what rossi showed at united, but rossi probably will eclipse him on the world stage in the years to come.

Explain the tagline, I've always wondered...

What thread did it come about in?

Can't really remember which thread, me and redwhiteblack had some sort of long running disagreement over something and he kept calling me a "know it all". I thought that was funny

I don't think he's super-talented but there's definitely enough there to suggest that he could become a very good player.

Nice to see that Evans and Welbeck have ended the run of home grown players failing to make it, which goes back to when Fletcher first came into the side.

I remember everyone on here saying Evans would not make it when he was coming through with Pique. He seems to be doing quite well now! I reckon for an 18 year old Wellbeck has been great. He has scored in nearly every game he has played for us this year and looks to be a class apart from his age group. Sure most people on here said Rooney was nothing special when he was that age playing at Everton!! Welbeck to make it - Thats my opinion!

I hope you're joking.

Going to be a huge success at United. And great to see a local striker coming through the ranks.

I think he'll make it. Fantastic talent and likely to stick around. The commentator on the French channel last night compared him to Henry at a similar age.

Has anyone ever curled the ball with the inside of thier right foot into the corner of the net and NOT been compared to Henry.

Great prospect. When he missed a pen in he debut preseason I didnt think we'd see him feature at all for the first 11...

He's already exceeded my expectations.

TBF, it's also his movement as well as his running style, plus he has a rather elegant style. Still, the comparisons are silly, but you can see where they're coming from.

Welbeck is very talented and I hope he keeps on learning and improving. He could make it here at United, and its always nice to see young players coming through the academy

Oh yeah, he's got the va-va-voom for sure :wenger:

Opportunities for young strikers at United are few and far between - great to see him grabbing his chance.

Goal/Good performance at Wembley in the CC final would go down a storm - his bollocks would double in size and he could start featuring more often from the bench in the prem.
