WWC19 | Final: USA v Netherlands

That's the key right there. If the implementation and use can be done like in the Men's World Cup then football will gain from it. It's about improving its use for me, it's a good tool.

I agree with that. At the moment so much is up in the air though - the attempt to clarify and standardise the rules has exposed the fact that a lot of us don't like the rules, which is not VAR's fault.

The keepers at penalty kicks, the new interpretation of "interfering with play" being used for offside, the silhouette use in handball, and what looks like an over-enthusiasm for seeing penalties in minor contact are the things that are really testing the rules not the VAR.

On the VAR side it's mostly the delays, the frequency of use (which has felt like re-refereeing the game) and the way it's favoured big teams, that's upsetting people.

There's some of that that cannot be separated out from the VAR though. And quite often, it isn't any different from having a referee decide anyway, for the subjective stuff. Although that is changing in certain areas.

Not so easy for referees to quietly ignore stuff like they used to = increased frequency of use. More decisions suddenly being regarded as 'significant' - player/GK movement at penalties.

Record number of penalties apparently. Each one taking 12 hours to award, miss & retake.

Oh yeah, I've got a 'challenge' thing from last night too.

The marginal offside before the non-penalty. I don't think you'd get that even if you challenge the penalty. Why would they look at it? Who is going to ask about the offside to start with?

So.... and/or you have to return to the lino putting their flag up for offside? So you possibly lose closely looking at offside from the search for better decision making.

If there is one 'big' thing that VAR is perfect for - it's deciding on & offside (trusting the line <--- altho that's another argument on the VAR thread, and possibly the dullest too, :(.

Back on topic, I’m expecting a right game at 5 between Italy and China but will predict an Italy win.

Either side are capable in tonight’s game, but I think Netherlands will sneak over the line.

I like Italy, they're fun to watch despite not looking like technically great individuals. If they had a bus, they'd drive it into the opposition's half and park it offside.

They don’t even look interested at the moment.

It's been almost like they don't think they're good enough to get anywhere. There were comments early on about their coaches saying they were preparing for next year's Olympics - I wonder if that's how they've really been talking.

I’m wandering if they are trying to preserve energy levels for the 2nd half. They look really hesitant.

Absolutely loved that goal. Really clever, slick football.

Massively enjoyed this World Cup so far, it's had its drawbacks in terms of VAR and women's football still has a way to go in some areas, but the football has largely been really enjoyable and of a good quality.

Japan looking like the better team now, second half could be good.
Miedema should've made the 2-1 there, that would've been a massive mental blow.

Curses.

Also, Im starting to get more invested in this women's football thing :wenger:

in some ways I'm starting to prefer the tactical shape of these women's games

like men's footy used to be, with defences playing with a genuine offside line & just not sinking deeper & deeper

and teams try to control the game, not waiting to counter as their main tactic
