Luka Modric / Signs for Real Madrid

Wow, the Sneijder situation has gotten so bad that we are populating threads about a player who's stated his desire to move to Chelsea and a German who will never leave his club ever.

Bad times :(

indeed, to the Downing thread!

Not saying you are wrong, but your views are very idealistic which isn't practical in the real world. I mean, right now, the immediate goal of Spurs is to establish themselves as a genuine and consistent team in the Champions League. A player like Modric, while superb, is more of a luxury than a necessity for Spurs. By that, i mean should the sale of Modric, comes with the likes of Alex, Sturridge and Mikel in return, then Redknapp should grab it. Modric is a starter for a title winning team, but there is no point in having a worldclass player in one position, while remaining relatively weak in the 8 other positions (except Bale, Sandro, Dawson). I think the smart thing at this juncture is to rob Chelsea of as many players whom are capable of bringing up the overall quality of Spurs in as many positions as possible, and use the existing transfer funds to seek a replacement. Afterall, replacing Modric in midfield is a lot easier than having quality players of all postions accepting to play for Spurs, if you know what i mean. Simply put, if the sale of Modric means losing a start midfielder, but gaining a starter defender, midfielder and striker in return, it would be a +2 in overall terms.
Even if I set aside the "club authority" gain/argument, the remaining bottom line is that if you want to strengthen your team/squad, you don't start by selling your best player unless finances or contract situation dictate otherwise (which they don't in this case).

In any case, Spurs will be signing a striker or two this summer regardless, and we often now play with VdV as effectively second striker, so what makes you think that Sturridge would be part of any best XI at Spurs?

The same goes for Mikel, because we already have Sandro (competing with Huddlestone) who IMO is going to develop into an immense player.

So the deal you suggest would at most swap our best player, plus some unspecified amount of cash, for another starting XI player (Alex) and two squad players, one of which (Mikel) we don't remotely need.

Far better for Spurs to follow their own course and to leave Chelski struggling with their CM weakness.

... Spurs are simply not capable of attracting top quality players. ....
You might wish to cast your eye down the list of Spurs players from previous times - Ginola, Klinsmann, Hoddle, Berbatov, Gascoigne, Carrick, Ardiles, Villa, Lineker etc etc.

It's also strange, given your comment, how Modric, Bale and VdV would be welcomed at several of the biggest clubs in Europe. And this time next year it's entirely possible that that the same will be said of the likes of Sandro and Walker.

Spurs have long been capable of attracting or developing top quality players. That isn't going to change anytime soon.

I think he is talking in the present as opposed to a time when I had a full head of hair and football players were all older than me.

Carrick and Berbatov, the most recent, were not brought into Spurs as big name signings.

Not going to play Spurs first friendly match due to the "Ankle Injury"

Does the injury to Sandro who has had knee surgery and will be out for 3 months make Spurs more determined to keep Modric?

I used to like SSN before, now they are just a joke. Shame.

they're basically 2 days behind everyone. And round all transfer fees to the nearest 5m for ease of comprehension.

Chelsea manager Andre Villas-Boas admits that the Blues will not wait forever in their pursuit of Tottenham midfielder Luka Modric and have other players in the pipeline.

The Croatia international has been the subject of fevered speculation this summer linking him with a move away from north London. Such talk was fuelled further by the player himself after Modric admitted he would like to leave White Hart Lane for pastures new, preferably Stamford Bridge.

Villas-Boas would not shed any light on the Modric situation after overseeing a 1-0 defeat of Portsmouth, but - when asked about links with Modric and West Ham midfielder Scott Parker - said: "I would prefer not to comment. You know what the situation is, it is public. At the moment we are scanning the market for everything and not just those two players."

He added: "[Modric plays in] one of the positions we are looking to strengthen.

"But again today you saw we adapted Yossi (Benayoun)'s position in the middle and also against Wycombe he was marvellous in the position.

"It is just a question of finding the solution.

"If it happens it happens, if it doesn't happen it doesn't happen."

When asked whether a deal for Modric was just a matter of time, he retorted: "No, it does not depend on us.

"Spurs have a right to defend their player and property. We just have to wait.

"We respect whatever position Tottenham takes and the prices we are talking about is an incredible amount of money."

Who are you after that is German?

How much do you stand to lose when he goes Glaston?

No, I don't intend to stake any money. I was just curious.

unreal to give someone who doesn't want to stay at the club to be captain.

Its a joke having a wantaway player as captain. As bad as Tevez being captain last season

Ahem...

His final season? He wanted to go long before that!

No idea whan that is from though, I just put "Ronaldo Captain" into google.

He wanted to leave in the summer prior to his final season. Prior to that he only talked about one day playing for Real Madrid, bit of a difference.

Anyway, my point still stands. Its a joke to have a wantaway player as captain. The player who's meant to be settin an example for the other players to look up to, who's shown disrespect to the club and fans by submitting a transfer request. I can see why Redkapps done it but as a fan i wouldnt be impressed
