UK Riots (with the exception of Manchester which has its own thread)

I haven't heard anyone in the last dozen pagea of this thread try to justify what's happened as a justifiable protest against police brutality. Even the kids involved gave up that pretence a while back.

Of course, that's not to say the ghettoisation (no idea if that's spelt right) of a segment of London society isn't a big factor. You reap what you sow as a society and the bigger the gap between the haves and the have nots the less the more likely you are to create a generation of kids that just don't give a feck.

Tis true. Just a shame they haven't got the co-ordination to march on the Houses of Parliment rather than Joe Bloggs furniture shop down the road.

So do you think they'll cancel or move the game at Wembley, or is it far enough out to be safe?

They're thinking of cancelling it according to one paper tomorrow.

The Conservative government aren't in any way responsible, oh no.

If you're attempting to paint me as a tory you're barking up the wrong tree. Students had every right to protest and had legitimate causes of concern. There were plenty of people who went down there that day who weren't students and/or didn't give a hoot about the reasons for the legitimate protests, they just wanted to kick off.

You cannot talk about the creation of ghettos in London and not bring very high levels of immigration into the equation, who have/have been settled into those same small and condensed clusters in the major cities. London's population growing by well over a million since the early 1990s doesn't help matters either.

Comment wasn't aimed at you at all.

The police definitely need water cannons, die guns, and other none lethal means of responding. If a curfew is in place anyone covered in die can easily be arrested when they are separated from the groups.

If I heard correctly, they don't have water cannons.

Aye, it's all the immigrants fault.

You weren't even born the last time London rioted like this. A decade before the 1990s.

The country was also gripped by a severe recession at the time and also had a Conservative government. Funny that.

No offence but you're coming across as a bit of a Ihni binni dimi diniwiny anitaime in this thread.

Considering the age of a lot of these thugs he has a point, the youngest person to be arrested being 11.

I'm starting to get a very low tolerance for these thugs. The situation has escalated so the authorities need to raise their response. They are destroying communities, businesses and spreading fear. We need to get control of the streets quickly.

I'm not adverse to tear gas, water cannons, tasers, etc being used. Need to make a statement of intent and teach these idiots, young or not, some respect.

I think so. It's not my pic, I found it on the net but i've just seen another one. Looks like riot police are lurking around as well.

Few mates texting me saying coppers are round the station stop and searching anyone, not sure how many around. I think it'll spread around west london. There is literally no reason for any of it, just bored kids kicking off because they know nothing is going to happen to them.

What's wrong with that? Your children are your responsibility.

Nothing. One side will blame the perpetrators and their families and talk about individual repsonsibility, and the other side will say it is society's fault and "we are all guilty" in the words of Dr Heinz Kiosk. There's plenty of blame to go round.

Love or hate the Tories, you can't blame them for the recession.

Five meatwagons, and three cars literally just pulled up outside ours. A couple of the cops got out, appeared to be pointing the other way (looks suspiciously like they were lost) and then they all sped off

You are the one who talk about ghettos in London, funny how you want to throw everything at the feet of the tories but as soon as I mention that we have seen very high levels of immigration, from a multiplicity of differing cultures, all thrown together in some of the poorest and most rundown parts of our cities you try to go high brow.

I was born at the time of the Poll Tax, I remember the Oldham Riots very well also so don't try and say this only happens when the tories are in office.

Considering how you want to make this very partisan, maybe you should think why these thugs are rioting when the level of funding for state benefits, access to university, etc. all grew substantially under Labour - no previous generation in British history in good times or bad has ever had the social protections, state funding for various things, or access to higher education as the current adolescent generation has - yet it is now we see riots of such a scale.
