Why would he feel the need to write history ?
He could want to start another beautiful legacy with another number.He might want to avoid the added pressure of the number 7.Well there are many reasons to say he'd want the number 7 just as many reasons to say he wouldn't want the number.
I'm not saying you're wrong because it's a valid point. I'm just saying that is is unlikely, most footballers in the world who aren't dictated by money would give their right arm to be United's Number 7.
Look at Giggs, everything he has done in the shirt and yet he's known as Ryan Giggs, rarely do people think of him as Ryan Giggs 11. There was talk about his number when he won his 11th title because it was fitting but in reality the Number 11 shirt despite making it his own and wearing it for near on 20 years isn't iconic or considered much of a brand.
Maybe if the next two number 11's take it on and become icons themselves then the shirt will start to carry weight but at the moment it's just a shirt number Giggs wears.
The fact the number 7 itself is so iconic in western society as well also adds weight to it.
