UEFA Champions League
Wednesday 7th November 2012
Estádio Municipal de Braga
KO: 19:45 GMT

Team should be...

GK: De Gea

RB: Rafael
CB: Smalling
CB: Evans
LB: Evra

CM: Fletcher
CM: Scholes
CM: Anderson
CM: Rooney

CF: Hernandez
CF: RVP

Subs: Lindegaard, Carrick, Giggs, Cleverley, Valencia, Nani, Welbeck

Diamond in midfield

Lindegaard
Valencia Evans Wootton Buttner
Fletcher Powell
Anderson
Nani Hernandez Welbeck

Bench: DeGea, Keane, Cleverley, Giggs, Rooney, RVP, Young

It's going to be that boring away game in Champions League, right?

They usually are. A win and we're through though so hopefully we put out a team to do just that then play a weakened team when we go to Turkey and then finish the group at OT with a win and top the group :)

For me 4-3-3 comprising of:

De Gea

Rafael Ferdinand Evans Evra

Cleverley Carrick Anderson

Chicharito Van Persie Rooney

Won't happen though.

Reckon we'll see a midfield three of Fletcher, Scholes, and Anderson. Nani and Hernandez will start, possibly Lindegaard and Buttner. Rafael may get benched for Valencia to play Right Back, but not too sure about that one.

Lindegaard
Valencia Ferdinand Evans Evra
Fletcher Scholes
Nani Anderson Welbeck
Hernandez

May see Giggs as well, and surely Rafael needs a little break now after clocking up the minutes

De Gea

Valencia--Evans--Smalling--Evra

Scholes--Fletcher--Anderson

Nani--Hernandez--Giggs

0-0 or 1-1 which will do just fine

Guaranteed starters:

Rafael
Evans
Fletcher
Anderson
Welbeck
Hernandez

They're the only ones I'm certain will start.

It'd be a travesty if we didn't top a group that includes Cluj, Braga and Galatasaray. This is weaker than any group in Europa League.

A win in Braga and Cluj not getting three points against Galatasaray and we already win the group. It would be fine.

Lindegaard

Rafael
Smalling
Evans
Evra

Nani
Fletcher
Scholes
Anderson
Rooney

Hernandez

SUBS: de Gea, Ferdinand, Buttner, Valencia, Cleverley, Giggs, van Persie.

Smalling if fit of course (must be by now surely?!). Can see Valencia possibly starting at right back too or at least replacing Rafael there.

De Gea
Rafael---Ferdinand---Evans---Evra
Fletcher
Cleverley---Anderson
Rooney
Nani---Chicharito

Bench: Lindegaard, M. Keane/Smalling, Carrick, Scholes, RVP, Valencia, Young

Rest RVP I think, we have enough not to have to play him into the ground. Rooney I'm keeping in to supply Hernandez, give Nani a role upfront and see how he responds - this also allows to change the formation by pushing him out wide if necessary. I know this is likely to be a Lindegaard game, but I want De Gea to get a run of games. Also want the Anderson and Cleverley partnership to start again, even if it means no Scholes yet again.

RVP and Rooney will start to make sure we get the job done. I think 3 of todays back 4 will start but Rio may be left out and Carrick once again pushed out of position.

Nani instead of Young or Valencia with the other starting. Clevs and Anderson in CM.

Braga (A)
De Gea
Rafael Ferdinand Evans Evra
Fletcher
Cleverley Anderson
Rooney
Persie Welbeck

Villa (A)
Lindegaard
Rafael Smalling Evans Buttner
Carrick Scholes
Valencia Rooney Nani
Chicharito

With the run of fixtures at the moment, plus a comfortable looking position in the CL group, I imagine we will rest some big players for this one, and give opportunities to those who need some extra game time. Expect a fit of rage from posters in this thread when the lineup is announced.

Rest Rooney, RvP, Valencia, Carrick, Rio, Evra and Cleverley.

Personally I'd like to see Powell get a run out in an attacking midfield position, more out of intrigue than anything.

Hopefully:

Lindegaard

Rafael
Evans
Rio
Evra

Nani
Anderson
Fletcher
Cleverley
Young

Hernandez

Can't see Rafael playing after him playing every minute from every game lately. We'll probably go for a diamond type formation to keep the game tight.

Lindegaard
Smalling Evans Carrick evra
Anderson scholes fletcher
Rooney van Persie
Hernandez

Hopefully smalling is back for this so he can give Rafael a break. Carrick is the only person who can realistically give rio a break right now, considering jones is still out as well.

Edit: I keep forgetting fletcher is available for selection. Weird, but good having him back.

First game this season where I haven't got a clear preference on the line-up.

I suppose I'd like to see us go all-out to win one more game, and then we can bring in some fringe players and kids for the next one. Rest RVP and de Gea, and Rio is Smalling is fit. Give Nani a start but make sure to put the fear of god into him. No strolling around looking dissatisfied with life. Keep a nice first-choice core in midfield though.

Surely use Smalling to give Rio a break, not Rafael? Rio's a helluva lot more likely to need occasional rests this season than the Brazilian. Plus the most important thing with Rafael is keeping him playing. His form is almost always directly proportional to how much game-time he's getting.

-----------------------Lindegaard-----------------------

--D.Fletcher---------J. Evans---Smalling------------Buttner--

----------------------M.Carrick------------------------

-----------------P.Scholes---Anderson------------------

----Welbeck-----------J.Hernandez-------------R.Giggs--

Prediction:1-3 Hernandez, Giggs, Ando

Lindegaard

Rafael Evans Smalling Evra

Fletcher
Scholes Anderson

Rooney

van Persie Hernandez

Has SAF announced if Smalling or Jones will be available? That will have a huge bearing on the team selected.

Given our great start to this years ECL, and taking into account squad rotation and a healthy respect for the quality of opposition, I envisage something like

.............Lindegaard

Rafael Evans, xxx, Buttner

Fletcher, Scholes, Anderson,

...Nani, Hernandez, Giggs

However,if SAF is genuinely serious about taking NO CHANCES, and jones and Smalling remain unavailable for selection, then, taking into account squad rotation and a healthy respect for the quality of opposition

Then it will be something like

............Lindegard

Rafael, Evans, Rio, Evra

............Fletcher,
.....Anderson, Scholes,
............Rooney

...........Giggs,

............RVP

I think the first team I listed is easily good enough to win and would prefer we play such a side.

For the sake of match fitness etc, Lindegaard, Fletcher, Giggs, Scholes, Nani, Hernandez, all need a start. I'd build a team from that.

NB: Its such fun predicting teams right now, we have so much quality all over the squad!!!! Its abit like 2008.

Just imagine how hard it will be once we get Jones, Smalling, Vidic and Kagawa back in the picture!!!!

Of course the curse of Carrington will show that one we get those 4 back, we'll have 5 others injured!

Perfect outcome would be a win then we can see SAF run the youngsters out for some CL and game experience the last two meaningless group games.

I'd love to see us go there are wallop them but something tells me we're in for a nervous night. If Braga start as they did at Old Trafford, it'll be an interesting match.

Is this not our toughest group game, Braga away? If Smalling is ready to start them I could see resting Rio, but that's about it.

When we played Braga at home we used the diamond, so there has to be a good chance we'll use it again. The line up for the first match was:

De Gea
Rafael Carrick Evans Buttner
Fletcher
Kagawa Cleverley
Rooney
Persie Cheech

Anderson for Kagawa, and perhaps Evra for Buttner or Smalling for Carrick would suit me just fine.

Yep, this. Ando for Kagawa, Smalling for Carrick. We need to come racing out of the blocks. It will be very hard to get going in that atmosphere if we don't start well.

its a v interesting one, this one ... in that their are wildly different predictions being made by posters above!

Basically, we just don't know how SAF will approach this!

I feel like they both need a break, Rafael's played every minute these last few weeks, and I feel like Rafael's form is because of first team assurances. If he knows he's being rested for more important games, it shouldn't impact him. Like I said Carrick can fill in at centre back if jones isn't ready yet (or if he is then jones to right back and smalling middle).
