Gaming PlayStation 4 (Console)

We're essentially coming to the end of the silicon cycle, physics stops it being shrunk much further, it's general devices all the way from 2020 on, there's no need for dedicated devices.

Yep we can't go on forever on current technology.
Quantum computing up next

I see, makes sense to be honest. Does the same apply to Blu-ray/DVD players then? You can already make the argument for music what with spotify and iTunes.

I'll be sitting on an absolute fortune if that happens

Likewise, I'll have some decent dollar if it does.

Nintendo doesn't need the latest technology. Nintendo fans would be happy to live on nothing but new SNES games. Well, I would.

If it's backwards compatible I'll be getting it at launch regardless of its power etc. My PS3's life cycle must be close to the end, I bought it in July 2008 and somehow it still works but I don't expect it to last past this year and I don't want to replace it with a slim or anything (I might be forced to if it gives in around March or April though).

Past this generation we're probably going to see no improvement in graphics, some of the PS3 titles are already unbelievably good looking and if the next step is somewhere close to the step up between the 2 and 3, then I can't imagine there being another level.

There's plenty of levels yet. The consoles have stunted graphic development somewhat, but there's still plenty more to come.

I'd be happy with endless sequels to Mario64 on actual 64 cartridges.

Imagine how much money would be in re-releasing the Nintendo64 and a proper sequel!

Apart from nostalgia freaks, I can't see a lot of sales, they'd have make the console cheap as feck as it's basically a wristwatch a cartridge slot, these days.

You and this 'ahead of time' stuff.

Neither the PS3 or 360 could even compete with the mid-high level pc's at the time, just as these new consoles won't compete with today's models.

I don't expect them too of course, but it's relevant to the point I made.

XB360 could, PS3 was late. No PC had a card with unified shaders until one year after the XB360 released. And it was a nVidia card at that!

That's a bit of a myth (the prices for the basic unit are closer, especially now when you could grab one off ebay for next to nothing), but it's not the point being made anyway.

Surely he meant then?

I forget, how much did a PS3 cost at launch? The UK prices were mental

When you consider that dedicated BD players at the time were going for a grand, think about it! Also, PS3 has no dedicated hardware at all for dealing with audio or video, it's all software. HD-DVD choked the XB360, Cell can deal with 8 HD streams and still wave a hand at you.

Wasn't sony dropping about £300 with every retail unit on release though ?

Not sure what the exact figure was, but I remember reading that Sony were losing money on every console sold, especially as they cut the price in order to keep in line with Microsoft. Didn't they cut a whole load of jobs circa 2010, if I remember correctly?

Yes, even then. Factor in the monitor and other peripherals of a reasonable PC back then and the loss Sony and M$ were making on each unit, then the price isn't miles apart.

Besides, once again, that's not the point. It wasn't ever a comparison between the consoles and a PC, it was more about graphics innovation.

I know the idea was for Sony to win the Blu-Ray vs HD-DVD but will that not prove relatively futile as it seems inevitable that everything is going to be bought and downloaded electronically in the very near future.

I don't even have an optical drive on my computer any more, I don't see the point when I download Video and Audio and play it straight onto my various devices and download all my games electronically.

Most people don't have the capacity in their net connections (for one reason or other) to be downloading 50GBs each plop. Also, some people like high quality video instead of compressed to feck macro-blocked crap!

Looking at these next XBox rumours flying about, and if my PS4 info is correct, PS4 is going to shit all over it from a nice height. It's a weird design, it's Amiigaesque!

Weaste, what do you think both the new xbox and PS4 are in terms of release? I'd assume both companies would be fairly keen to get the jump on each other

Production problem BTW is in the APU, Sony are not using mobile cores, the real core might just get there, but then there's the yield problem. Cell is going in it! Before I thought it was going to be two chips like Cell and RSX, nope, it's all going on one die.

Like the PS3 was supposed to do with the 360 or will it actually this time?

PS3 was, until they decided to stick RSX in. Blame the likes of Lambs for that!

Not happening this time, the PS4 is an all balls out bandwidth beast. NeXtBox is limp, as I said, an odd design for this day and age, custom silicon all over the show!
