Neymar is a better player than Bale, and is 3 years younger. He scored more goals for Santos last season than Bale has in his Spurs career. I know what the response will be though.

He may well be, but that is a much fairer comparison than Ronaldo/Messi.

On the contrary, I trust Brazilian hype about him far less than I trust the European hype/backlash/whatever you want to call it tbf. Brazil are desperate - desperate!! - for it to pan out. We're in a period where Brazil have under performed (by their expectations) at the last 2 World Cups and lost an Olympics they sincerely tried to win to Mexico. Where the best team in the world are a Spain team considered by most to be well above them, and where the best player in the world is an Argentinian who many are already proclaiming the greatest of all time. Worse still, his closest challenger, the Pele to his Maradona, is a Portugese! It's like football is having a big latin love in and Brazil - the country of all footballing countries, and one that prides itself on that - are frozen out. And to top it all off, they've got to host the World Cup where all these players might just come to their hallowed back yard and show them up!

So even if Neymar wasn't about, they'd still be bigging up someone as their counterpart to Messi. It was always a bit silly for people to be placing him up there with M&R already when in reality he's achieved far less on the global stage than Rooney had....at 18.

Now that's not saying Neymar's going to be a massive flop, he's got great talent, but the Brazilian opinion of him is very unreliable IMO. There's always someone coming out of Brazil who's going to be the next Pele or Fat Ronaldo. They rely on stuff like that. And right now it just so happens that they're desperate for it more than ever. Which ironically is precisely what's stunting his development into actually being one.
Yeah I agree and they're good points to make, but I do value the few opinions I've read on Neymar to be above that kind of national feeling/fervour. All that talk's just got me prematurely excited for the World Cup - you'd feel it needs Brazil to go deep to be a great one, but the pressure on those players is going to be insane! Here's hoping for a Brazil vs. Argentina semi.

Brazillian press is hyping him up in the same way British press is hyping up Bale, tbf.

Both are clearly not in Messi/Ronaldo league.

Both are clearly players with talent, both have miles to go before being put in the Messi/Ronaldo class. It is fun watching the overall general opinions on players swing back and forth depending on their most recent games though.

<p> Even had one person tell me Bale is at or above not just Cristiano Ronaldo, but the original Ronaldo as well. Deary me.

Just lot all mofo respect for this prick.

Itty-bitty City: Neymar doesn't mention Prem champions as he discusses move to one of Europe's giants

"I dream of playing for a big club like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea" says the Santos star PLUS Eastlands summer clear-out planned

Neymar has snubbed Manchester City by stating he wants to join a “big” club, like Barcelona, Real Madrid or Chelsea.

Brazil star Neymar will leave Santos this summer, with Barca the likeliest destination for the £50million-rated forward.

City had hoped to hijack the Catalans' planned deal, but their bid looks doomed now the 21-year-old is talking up a move to the Nou Camp.

“Who wouldn’t dream about playing alongside Lionel Messi, Xavi and [Andres] Iniesta?” said Neymar. “They’re all great players.

"I dream of playing in Europe, for a big club like Barcelona, Real Madrid and Chelsea.

“Yes, Barcelona [impress me the most], they have great players like Xavi, Iniesta, Cesc Fabregas and Dani Alves.

“But there’s no point in speculating when I’ll leave Santos. I’ll leave when I want to.

“I don’t know where I would fit in if I joined Barca, but I know my place is at Santos right now.”

Meanwhile, with their Premier League title all but lost, the Eastlands club's hierarchy are planning a summer clear-out involving up to 10 players.

Wayne Bridge and Roque Santa Cruz, currently on loan at Brighton and Malaga respectively, will be released and Kolo Toure, out of contract, will also be allowed to leave for free.

Samir Nasri, Edin Dzeko, Scott Sinclair, Maicon, Gareth Barry, Dedryck Boyata and John Guidetti could also be moved on at the end of the season.

He's probably been advised not to go near them by Robinho.

Well, this is funny...

Think that was a Ronaldo image, originally. He turned out ok. ;)

Wonder whether he will move this summer and where will he go?

Dunno, how SAF likes his attitude but would love it if we signed him.

Indications are that he will move only after the world cup. And most like Barcelona.

Dunno, why he wants to stay till the World cup and isn't his contract expiring? He's pretty much gained whatever he could by staying in Brazil.

A year in tougher conditions will help him get better before the World cup but guess, he's happy to be a megastar in Brazil and getting paid reasonably well.

Don't think he will suit Barca's Tiki Taka system either.

It's all about "brand Neymar" according to Guardian's Fernando Duarte.

Brazil's supposed best player playing in the Brazilian league in the lead up to the world cup being played in Brazil is great for sponsors and Neymar's pockets. Loads of exposure.

Apparently a large chunk of his huge wages is being paid by sponsors.

Duarte reckons "brand Neymar" will be up there with "brand Beckham".

In Brazil, definitely. Globally no chance unless he goes to Europe and Is Messi/Ronaldo level good.

Even Brand Ronaldo or Brand Messi it can be argued are behind Brand Beckham in it's peak.

Paul Breitner was at a show in espn Brasil. And said what everybody was thinking, or thought once. How can someone claim or even think about as the best player in the world, if he does nothing to more than play in a subpar Brazil league. Messi, Ronaldo, this guys do their thing on the best leagues, against the best players.

It's absolutely mental to even think about Neymar being in the same level.

It's a vital time that he loses staying still in Brazil. See the world of good the move is doing to Lucas... The Neymar brand, could be his greatest threat.

Good case for saying they're still behind it really. Beckham's "brand" is ludicrously powerful.

It would be hilarious if he fails once he finally moves to a European club.

I think it would be a shame.

I don't think their is enough players around like him. More flair less care!.

I agree. There's plenty of solid players around, even world class ones, but there's just not enough ridiculous players who completely take the piss when they've got the ball.

I'm hoping Zaha turns into a total pisstaker at least.

This. It would be a true disgrace. He has genuine talent, but he's wasting time playing in Brazil. There's nothing there for him, and for Dedé for what is worth, anymore. Only the same poor pitches, average league (with a few exceptions), and the media sucking up.

In Santos last game, Neymar scored 4:

The week before that, he scored this peach:

And the week before that one, he scored this (another great strike):

For what it's worth, I agree with the above. He could really hurt his development by staying in Brazil, but it looks like that's what's going to happen.

Commonly referred to as schadenfreude. Leaves you quite low on the emotional competence scale

He's overhyped, to be sure but I certainly don't dislike the player or wish him to fail. Who doesn't want to see creative flair players entertain us?

I'm not saying I want him to fail. I'm just saying it would be pretty funny if after all the hype about him he turns out to be like Robinho.

Tancredi Palmeri ‏@tancredipalmeri 5m

Here we are.Barcelona dramatically rushed to sign Neymar.Pressure now also through v high figure of Brazil FA. Neymar to Barça almost a fact

Tancredi Palmeri ‏@tancredipalmeri 2m

When I mean Neymar to Barcelona almost a fact, I mean from after Confederations Cup.

Who is Tancredi Palmeri? I couldn't see him moving personally before Brazil 14

CNN football correspondent, seems very well-connected though he usually doesn't give the usual rubbish (club x signs player y etc.) without any indication. Not exactly an ITK (:smirk:) from the time I'm following him, but gives a decent insight and sometimes has reliable information a little bit earlier than someone else.
Neymar to Barca is a classic though, everyone knows it's going to happen, so not exactly deep insight or insider knowledge. Worth a follow IMO if you're on Twitter.

No one likes overhype so eventhough I feel confident he's arriving to Barcelona this summer, even I'm tired of the hyperbole over his guaranteed success

Certainly has the potential to be Robinho 2.0 but he could also turn out to be sensational. We'll see soon enough but I think his first season will be marked more by struggle than success.

Yep, I'd say that's guaranteed.

Every time I see him I feel slightly less confident of him ever really making it. I've never seen him look at all special against a European/international side.

The story in the Spanish papers is that he's told Santos that he won't renew, which everyone takes as, "I'm off this summer."

I wouldn't be surprised one bit if Barcelona made their move this summer. They need a few new players and a signing of this quality will lift the whole squad.

2 months later and i probably still agree with you but the gap is really close at this point in time. If Neymar moves then we will see if he fulfills all that potential on the European stage.

I'd say though that Bale would be better for United than Neymar would be. I think Neymar would probably be better suited for a club like City or Chelsea when talking about the PL.

Why exactly?

United don't need either a striker or a winger for me (Not as top priority anyway) and when they have wingers they are 'proper' out and out wingers usually. Bale can fit that. None of this faffing around and letting him play behind the striker crap. Just let him play as a winger. In Youngs first season with United he had a pretty good one and he still cut inside and had shots on target whilst putting in crosses. Bale would be able to do this but to a more devastating effect. He'd slot much easier into the side than Neymar would who would be a bit like Kagawa in the sense that it would take him a bit longer to gel.

Chelsea need a striker still which is fairly obvious and Neymar could slot in there as part of a dynamic front 3, but you'd have to push out one of Mata/Oscar/Hazard. Maybe as Mata ages he can do what Cazorla has been doing and play a little deeper though.

City could have Neymar - ST - Aguero as part of a 4-3-3 combination which would also be deadly.

If we were to sign him or Bale we won't use either as a typical winger, i don't think. We'll use them in the role we gave Ronaldo in his last 2 years here and build the team from there.

Saw quotes from Rafael saying that he is going to Spain this week too, so very unlikely anyway.

According to the Catalan media, a delegation from Barca has travelled to Brazil to close the deal for Neymar.
