Netzer was brilliant in that 'director of football / manager' job, whatever you want to call in in English. He was the first German player who used his name as a brand and started to earn money, heavily criticised Gladbach for their lack of business sense and forced his way out of the club to sign for Madrid and earn a lot more. He really was a brilliant business man, never understood why he left Hamburg so soon and never worked in that position again. He could have done what Hoeness did at Bayern, imo.
Hamburg have won feck all since he left, if I remember correctly. One German Cup win shortly after, but since then not a single trophy for more than 25 years. That's really shocking for such a big club that stayed in the Bundesliga throughout that time, so I understand why the people are moaning and living in the past
