Bundesliga 13/14

Netzer was brilliant in that 'director of football / manager' job, whatever you want to call in in English. He was the first German player who used his name as a brand and started to earn money, heavily criticised Gladbach for their lack of business sense and forced his way out of the club to sign for Madrid and earn a lot more. He really was a brilliant business man, never understood why he left Hamburg so soon and never worked in that position again. He could have done what Hoeness did at Bayern, imo.

Hamburg have won feck all since he left, if I remember correctly. One German Cup win shortly after, but since then not a single trophy for more than 25 years. That's really shocking for such a big club that stayed in the Bundesliga throughout that time, so I understand why the people are moaning and living in the past . Our annoying neighbours here in Munich are doing the same.

Afaik, Hertha isn't really loved in Berlin, that's their biggest problem.
I'm careful with that kind of statement, there are also people still believing a "true munichian" supports 1860 when everything says otherwise. It is true, however, that Hertha never managed to get that much support from the Berliner. But then they suffered long time under the leadership of Hoeneß the Younger.

It's more a problem of football in general not being that big in Berlin while it plays such a huge part in most other cities in Germany, not only Munich but also Cologne and Hamburg for example. Also the eastern part of Berlin never really warmed up to Hertha, which makes it even more difficult. It's not comparable to the situation in Munich.

Well, that was a cracking goal by Moritz Leitner vs. Leverkusen. First one of the career as well. He has really grown in the last half year, which proves that the descision by Dortmund to loan him out was the right one. Same can be said about Leo Bittencourt, who currently plays for Hanover.

Sphaero, how do you rate Stuttgart's 17 year old Timo Wagner? Watched him play for the first time last night, well at least for the first half and he was quite impressive
playing on the left wing, seems to have explosive pace and gave the Leverkusen right back a tough time. Maybe United should take a cheap gamble on this guy in the summer.

You probably mean Timo Werner?! The fact that he's a regular starter at age 17 probably speaks for itself.

I always found that statement kind of funny, seeing the support Bayern had throughout the last three decades especially all around Germany, but also in Europe. 1860 may have a rich history, but they are really nowhere near Bayern. It's the same crap spouted everywhere to be fair, City has more supporters than United, Torino more than Juventus etc., but the truth is the city's giant is always bigger. Always.

Timo Werner is without a doubt one of the biggest German offensive talents right now, maybe even the biggest one. The boy is gifted with huge talent, but the most astounding part about him is the consistency and maturity in his play. Several people recently called him the striker version of Mario Götze and I can see where they are coming from. Despite being a very different player type the special level of maturity on the pitch is something they have in common.

Werner´s first season half as professional was very impressive (youngest Bundesliga player in history to score an assist and two goals in a game) and he also made a major impact on the youth national teams of Germany. In his 32 appearances (mostly for the U17) he scored 23 goals. As result for his performances he was honored with the Golden "Fritz-Walter-Medaille", the most important youth award in the country, in the U17 category and could very well be the first one since the before mentioned Götze to win two of them in the future.

Him and Kevin Volland are for me the brightest striker hopes in Germany right now.

Thanks for the information on this talented player, I wonder when Bayern will make their move for him.
A bigger club than Stuttgart will surely be making a move for him soon.

Yeah Werner is definitely class. I'd have him up there along with Meyer and januzaj as the best u18 players in the world right now (Werner is a year younger then the other 2 as well). I can see Dortmund going for him soon too, with their need for a striker and his ability to play on the wings too. Also heard Dortmund want to sign volland as well which would be a great signing long term.

Crazy how many promising youngsters they have right now ignoring the more developed and popular ones like draxler and gotze. Werner, Meyer, volland, Brandt, goretzka, tah, oztunali, etc., the list goes on and on.

Also amazing how there were people on here doubting thiago
He's a class player and is fitting in perfectly into the bayern team. He had an injury earlier in the season but he would've been a perfect midfielder for us both short term and long term.

Were there? The whole of caf was literally wanking themselves silly for a month when we were being linked with him. When he went to Bayern, it was more a case of "well, we didn't want him anyway", rather than seriously believing that he wasn't good.

I remember there being a few people who weren't impressed we were going after a player who couldn't get into Barca's team (terrible logic I know) and there were a few who just thought we needed somebody more proven and more ready then a youngster, even though he was already a class player. It was the minority but I just found it funny.

It was more of a case of Moyes not being impressed with Thiago, rather than United fans, I think. Moyes knew of his situation, and I'm certain United scouts will have had tabs on him from before Moyes joined us. He was available for significantly less than Fellaini. A creative, ball retaining, goal scoring central midfielder. Baffling that we didn't even make an approach of any kind.

Worth asking @vuc and @Nani Nana about them. They're the Serbian Experts.

@Sphaero Jojic is a versatile midfielder with great all-round technique, set-piece abilities and vision. The most distinctive feature about him is his ability to play anywhere in midfield, as a holding player or an attacking player across the front 3. He was certainly the best player in the Serbian league and could be a great player for Dortmund if he remains level-grounded.

I think Dortmund went for him because he is not a prima donna and is extremely professional. Some Partizan youngsters have more talent but are not as hard-working.

And how do you know we didn't? There may have been discussions with Pep behind the scenes as well.

Well according to Moyes, we weren't in for him. Which I doubt given all the rumours and De Gea stuff and everything else, it seemed to me like we just dragged our feet and weren't completely sure and wanted to get him for less then the release clause and ended up missing out on him once Bayern became interested.

Hell of a strike. Xhaka and Hermann looked poor again, Kramer quite good but some awful attempts with his (wrong) right foot

Miki, Reus, Aubameyang, Lewy all playing alone, so many chances to pass the ball to kill it yet everybody tries on his own.

Get your shit together ffs.

1-0 Dortmund by Lewandowski. Good effort and assist by Schmelzer, who has a very good game so far.

Philipp Lahm . He really deserved a goal for the brilliant season he's playing.

Those early injuries killed the momentum that Numberg had. Shame.
They started really well, no doubt, and the injuries were a huge blow. They needed to score to have a chance though. There was no way, they could keep playing with that intensity throughout the whole game.

Mandzukic is an annoying cnut, but if he really leaves in the summer, I'll miss him. He gives us a different dimension, whenever the pretty passing football doesn't work, he's just the perfect player to fight it out with the centerbacks and score a header or a dirty goal or whatever we need.

FT in Bremen: 1-5

A shame, that we could not keep a clean sheet after all, but overall this was the most convincing game we had since the Neapel game in November. Could turn out to be a very important game for Mkhitaryan, who could really gather some confidence today. It also showed how important two well performing FB are for Dortmund´s game. Strong performances by both Schmelzer and Piszczek.

FT, Bremen 1 - 5 BVB.

2x Lewandowski, 2x Mkhitaryan, Friedrich.

Fourth goal for BVB was majestic, world class counter and brilliant finish.

You are laughing, I can honestly don´t say how I feel right now: relieved or frustrated. The first 30 minutes were poor, really poor. We improved after scoring the first one. All three of Mkhitaryan, Reus and Lewandowski desperately need a goal for a confidence boost. Right now, we have exactly one clinical player in the squad and this guy scored both goals today. I also can´t shake off the feeling that Auba would be better off as CF than RW in the long run.

All in all the struggle continues. We have to fight for every inch right now. At least we finally won a close game again. Maybe that and Hummels´ return can become a turning point in the season.
Two of the three sorted. How did Reus play? I read he had two assists, which should also help with his confidence?

Reus was good today. Worked and tried a lot and had some nice combinations going. He also drifted more towards the center like he did at the beginning of the season and interchanged well with Mkhitaryan. The movement as a whole improved a lot.

Simply a very good game by Dortmund. Something that gives me a confident feeling for the upcoming cup game vs. Frankfurt and the following crucial weeks. It was not the most graceful but still a succesful start of the season half. Something that mirrors our usual league progression. We are a team that normally gets stronger in the second season half when the mechanisms fall into place.
