Arturo Vidal

I'm just picturing this bid:

Forget about structuring the deal, forget about covering some of the contract Juve would have to pay Vidal, forget about formal esquires to establish a ball park figure, forget about using his agent as an intermediate.

Just a simple fax:
"Hi Juvetus this is Manchester United we are offering £45m for Vidal take it or leave it thanks, Blair x".

5 minutes, guys.
That's good

The Veron deal was relatively easy. Both player and Lazio were risking big by him remaining in Italy (the passport scandal) and he was shipped away as soon as possible. JSV never wanted to leave Italy. His style suited the place, he became homesick from day 1 and he was expected to change his game and settle down in an already established midfield made up mostly of homegrown talent, pushing one of the 'lads' out of position in the process.

In my opinion he was the wrong player who came to OT for the wrong reasons.

regardless of reasons for leaving Italy, I was just addressing the point previously

Nah he emailed bids@theoldlady.it and now he's wondering why he's getting such weird spam.

No way. I can go to £1.3m TOPS! And they don't have to be black...I'd do anything.

My sources tell me Ed Woodward is not willing to pay the asking price for black singles, or any singles.

I've been informed that Ed Woodward is not currently interested in black singles.

If you've read Fergie's book you'll know it was more down to the player himself having little regard for positional discipline which made it impossible to work him into any system. He was a (marvelous) midfielder who needed the ret of the team to accommodate him.

Pexbo, how come you so sure this transfer will happen mate?

In relation to Yaya, would anyone say they are similar players?

I read it and I wasn't surprised one bit by it. JSV was a libero ie he was given free reign to do what he pleases him and hit the opponents were he deem fit.

At some extent. They are both very, very influential in midfield. They also share some attributes, like willingness to go forward and playing as additional striker. And I would say similarities ends there.

Exactly.

It's as though some posters are incapable of reading between the lines - they just take what's said as gospel; hence all the flip-flopping of moods!

United are clearly approaching this summer's transfer window with a different tact - they're keeping their business under wraps and not making public pronouncements. Has Woody been quoted once this summer? Not that I've seen...

The English press have clearly been briefed that Vidal isn't on our radar - that doesn't mean we are telling the truth. We could be, but football is littered with instances where clubs have been economical with the truth to throw the media off the scent. "Wouldn't sell that mob a virus"...

Finally, Juventus were always going to flex their muscles at yesterday's presser. Losing Conte was a blow, so they were hardly going to follow it up by saying Vidal is for sale - the Juve fans are already up in arms. The way I saw it, they were saying that the club doesn't want to sell and if a deal does happen, it'll be because Vidal forced it. It's a common method for transferring blame from the club to the player.

So, in summary, Vidal might or might not move to United, but press suggestions that he's not on our radar are absurd - there's way too much smoke. Suggestions that we're baulking at the asking prove are also stupid given how much we've spent on Herrera and Shaw.

We go through this roller coaster every time we sign a player, I would've thought - as seasoned muppets - you'd all be used to it by now!

This is like the muppet version of the Braveheart speech. Well done William

Arsenal signed Sanchez a matter of hours after the world cup. Real Madrid signed Kroos today just as he fecking stepped off the plane after the WC. I could go on and on.
Both players who were not needed by their clubs anymore.

Same influence maybe but Vidal is smaller and less of a "tank" if that makes sense. For example, you won't see Vidal pushing 3-4 defenders off and slotting it into the net. He's more of a dribbler.

Vidal can and has played everywhere on the pitch. From CB to CDM to CM to CAM to ST. I'd pay 55m for him easily. He's that good. He would be our Yaya if we signed him.

They also didn't say "Vidal is not for sale" they said "We will not put Vidal up for sale" which is completely different. It's suggesting that they won't actively try to sell him, but would accept a bid high enough, just like anyone would.

i would agree. Juve like bilbao want to keep face. They want to try and make it seem that vidal wants to go and united put in a bid of note. They know what vidal means to the juve fans, so they have to play the cards right

If we appear to miss out on big targets, it can be because they 'didn't really want to play for United'. Of course, there's a strong argument that that's a sound transfer strategy, and it's probably a genuine factor in decisions.

I think it's a primary factor, especially now with LVG on board, and if so I'd be delighted. What excites me most about LVG is his obvious team building ability and aversion to hiring here today, gone tomorrow mercenaries just to get a quick job done, bag a title or two, then ride off into the sunset with us back at where we started. I'm confident there's plenty of players around who really want to play for United and for the right reasons and who could become part of a unit capable of winning at the highest level under LVG. They aren't necessarily the Vidals of this world. It seems that LVG is motivated by the development of a specific club philosophy and identity based on this.

Mannschaft. Half the caf will probably think that's a cock reference but it is a remarkably apt buzz word in football this summer.

Robo on MUTV was saying that players of Yaya's ilk are hard to come by and that if he knew we could sign Yaya then he would happily give 60m for him. Seemed a strange comment to make tbh.

A chopper just flew over my office heading towards Salford, Vidal is obviously on his way to OT.

He would pay 60m for a 31-year old? FFS Robbo :D

The reports for Italy keep saying the same.

It's cat and mouse at the moment. We are briefing the English guys that we are not interested in spending a shed load on him (I think because the player is interested in United) while Juveare briefing the Italian press that "Vidal is not for sale, but please offer us lots of money for him".

Haven't we moved on from that to "We're not in for the player"?

We need to get this wrapped up fast, no waiting for Vidal to finish his holiday. PSG will come in for Pogba and that will be the end of the Vidal pursuit.

The holiday thing is annoying. As people have pointed out, other players are getting signed while on holiday - if we are in for him we shouldn't be letting this delay us.

If LVG kills the story today will there still be people refusing to believe it or will that be enough to convince people?
