I find it very weird that club has not only revelaed the fee but also the 50% sell on clause.. We usually go with the standard "for an undisclosed" fee.

In Portugal they disclose all terms of transfers, so that's why we revealed the fee and the clause as it'd be revealed on Benfica's end anyway.

I don't get why there's all this panic over transfer when we've already added 2 top players to our team, Mata will start his first full season with us and our manager has already stated that he wants to look at what he has for another 3 or 4 weeks before he adds or sells anyone else. He already commented about our lack of defenders so for me that's already a statement of intent that we're looking at something there. Believing every paper or twitter rumor and then being disappointed about it is your fault, don't try to blame it on the club.

We added one good CM and a 19 year old to replace a top LB, it's hardly gonna alter the course of things much, but the real concern is over leaving it so late IMO, when you do that you are often rummaging in the bins for leftovers as the best stuff is gone.

It was an easy signing for him, he thought he knew him. The other two would have been a risk and Moyes is very obviously not a risk taker.

I dont think thats it, not with Strootman anyway. Else why wait till the last minute to get Fellaini?

We thought we could get Fabregas and players of that ilk and ended up with egg on our face. By the time we knew we couldnt get him Strootman had gone to Roma already.

This. We are three weeks away from the first game and we are looking at a minimum of 3-4 signings just to make up a good squad. And we are going to be playing a new system, which players have to get used to.

Last summer all we needed was a midfielder and a cover for Evra. This summer we didn't only lose Evra but Büttner too with Rio and Vidic. On top of that Carrick is out for a few months, our wingers are still shite and our current squad is terribly unbalanced. If Herrera and Shaw is the only addition this summer then it's pretty much last summer 2.0.
I don't think there's any chance that Shaw and Herrera are our only signings of the summer. van Gaal did say that he wanted a couple of weeks to evaluate the squad and see who can go and where we need to strengthen. I think it's inevitable that we're going to bring in a couple of defenders and another midfielder, but who is anyone's guess. Seems like we've gone very very quiet in regards to briefing the press, a lesson well learnt from last summer.

The next few games will be key to who goes from the squad i bet. A 7-0 drubbing of LA Galaxy is great, but how we play against Inter, Roma and Real will show up quite a few of our average players i imagine.

We are leaving it far too late again. The suits won't have any excuses if it goes tits up this time though.

See my post below yours. He categorically stated, more than once, than he'd assess his squad before signing anyone. Now you're realising he might have actually been telling the truth it's like some shocking revelation, when it makes sense to have a look at what you have first. It's like buying a house and gutting it just in case it's shit, before checking first to see if it's actually shit or whether the guy living in it before you was just a useless twat who couldn't decorate properly.

I think it is the truth to some extent but on the other hand, if he buys a player he would want to "integrate" him into his philosophy as soon as possible, especially if he hasn't worked with him before

Holy Moly. No one knows who were after. You're all fecking insane.

Indeed. Toys being chucked out of numerous prams. It's July 25th. If I was a betting man, I'd put money on us securing at least another midfielder and a CB by August 25th. Plenty of time yet.

I think Vermalen is coming in. I don't know who our midfielder target would be if Vidal and Strootman are not happening.

If you want to look at it that way, fine. We replaced a left back who was tired after the 60 minute mark and was a liability towards the end of December and the start of January because of his lack of stamina with one of the most talented left backs in football, we strengthened what used to be our weakest area in the team with the signing of Herrera and Mata gets to play his favorite position behind the strikers.. I think you quickly forget the amount of goals we've conceded from Evra's side because he doesn't track back in the 2nd half of games.

If you were a betting man I'd take that bet

So Liverpool are close to sign Lovren (£20m), Origi (£9,8m) and Remy (£8m), having already signed Lallana (£25m), Lambert (£4m), Markovic (£20m) and Can (£10m). Congratulations, you've done a Spurs 2013 there - £97m for a decent CB & striker, one very good prospect (Markovic) and loads of squad players

They kind of need the squad players with European football this season. They are still planning to rely on players like Lucas and Stevie G, which could well prove to be their heel.

I see the transfer forum hasn't changed much from last year. Some of you need to get out more. The sky isn't falling down because we didn't get bought a new expensive toy, the ones we have been bought and are going to be bought might not look as fancy but they'll still be fun, and some of the ones we already have just need a wash and a tidy up.

I agree with most of this post but you cannot wash and tidy up Anderson,Fellaini,Cleverley, Fletcher. They are just mediocre at best. LvG is not a miracle worker. Carrick is our best midfielder but turning 33 and not even good enough to play for England also we no longer have Giggs to call upon.
Herrera oozes class but come the games against City and the like he will be hopelessly overrun with any of those clowns supporting him and our defence will be under a lot of pressure just like last year.
I for one would take Blind even DeJong but I'm sure if these were actually wanted then Van Gaal would've had either of them signed by now.
Vidal and Kroos would have been muppet gold but obviously a) we did not actually want them or much more likely b) they did not want to join us.
However I'm not letting one preseason game and a quality pedigree manager paper over the serious cracks we have in midfield and defence so I'm not 100% buying the 'I will assess the players' statement. The season starts in 3 weeks he will need to improve our midfield and our central defence if he seriously wants to challenge for the title so surely we must be like Eddy big balls said working on transfers right now.

My what a pedantic lot we have in here. Any negative twatter rumours regarding a target and the whole world is going to end and "no value in the market"..."how could we turn him down" etc etc comments come out. In the next 12hours I predict a probably bs positive link and suddenly muppetstarbation will resume.
LVG has stated he wants to have a look at the squad first before deciding on movement of players....he is currently doing that....And that is ALL we know from LVG and ALL it appears anybody know be it the press, the likes of Mitten, the twatter "I want some more follows lets rumour some shit" brigade etc etc. One of the things Woodward has said is that from speaking to agents there are a lot of players interested in playing for the club regardless of CL football and that we are able to spend unlike most other clubs. This could be a load of horse manure but for all we know we may already have deals lined up and LVG is assesing whether to finalise them. I still think we need at least two or three more signings and we have had a few summer now to be fair of underwhelming transfers with the added piss off of the muppet signing that doesnt happen but lets wait and see what transpires as I cant believe we wont see another two players through the door who ever they may be, then we can whine or muppetstarbate when we know who they are when/if the come.

There is plenty of time indeed, but surely if we can it makes sense to get them in before the season starts, most of our defensive targets (Hummels aside) are doable now, bed them in etc etc.

Was never going to be easy with LvG away with Holland and this preseason being held in America. He's had the job little over a week & fair play to him he's actually giving the current squad a look at first before rushing into any transfer decisions.

Players we sign not fitting into the new system? I'm sure a couple of the Dutch lads will know the system well enough if that's what we end up with. I'm still certain of the Vidal interest, many may not be, but on a positive side he's also had experience at playing in a 3-5-2 system with Juve. Not with Van Gaal, but still a plus.

I agree completely :) And I think we'll sign them when we get back from tour which is a week on Monday isn't it? 4th August?

Shaw is still a huge unknown quantity as far as stepping up goes, and Evra was not nearly as much of a liability as you are making out IMO, yes he was getting past his best but his energy and stamina were not in question, he was still a good LB and one of the better players we had last season, to me that transfer is merely breaking even right now. Herrera looks good for sure but the midfield needs gutting and rebuilding, it's still way too easy to just run through us with what we have, so one addition is a start not an ending IMO.

Average players dont turn into great players overnight. The deadwood we have has been evident for 2-3 years. I for one am f*cking sick of seeing them play in the shirt & its about time we stopped that policy of handing a shirt to an average player who might come good..

This other policy of only goin for players who really want to play for the club is as brain-dead also. Most great players will fall in love with the club once they're here..

Our supposed interests in Vermalen, De vrij, Blind etc.., I don't understand the hold up in these deals. These should be bread and butter deals for a club like us and if they are being delayed, then there is something seriously wrong with the suits.

Its like spoiled kids having a strop they didn't get their shiny new toy at Christmas.
Nobody is expecting we turn into Real Madrid but it is obvious that after last season we need some proper reinforcement.

We just saw the likes of rio, Evra, vidic and Giggs leave/retire, these players we're magnificent and world class to this club, it would make sense to replace them with quality. People suggesting this squad is good enough are wrong in my opinion. Van Gaal can only do so much with these players.

Chelsea made some major signings and are having a far superior summer compared to us. I am not expecting a "new shiny toy" or whatever but when a world class player is available and plays in an area where we lack some serious quality, it does not make sense we would not be trying to sign him. And the fact that Woodward makes these huge claims concerning our "financial strength" and "watch this space", you would expect a world class signing and no, de Jong is not the answer.

Nothing wrong with fans expecting united to compete with the best clubs in the world for the best players.

I completely agree with you, but i meant it in a way that it'll show up quite a few of our average player for van Gaal to see. Obviously we can all see who is utter crap, and it's infuriating when we see them play week in and week out, regardless of how bad they play. Hopefully these useless players will be exposed for van Gaal to see for himself when we play a better team then LA Galaxy and then they'll be on the first taxi out of OT.

Think so.

Yes those 12 days before the season starts from when we're back off tour will hopefully be the time the players flow in....... I live in hope anyway!

Pretty much this. As long as we plan to compete at least.

It really has come to that hasn't it.

Anxious last few weeks of the transfer window for us. It really is
