"Classic" Movies That You Just Don't Get

The second most laborious pile of wank I've ever sat through. Eraserhead was first.

you should read The Art Of The Ridiculous Sublime by Slavoj Zizek, it's on Lynchs Lost Highway. Or maybe you shouldn't, it absolutely made me appreciate Lynch more, but I loved Lynch before.

Also;

I did not like Saving Private Ryan, I thought it was stupid, the omaha beach scene was good, yups, but the plot etc. meh. I was not amused, not a little bit.

Reservoir Dogs.

After I watched it I sat there and tried to remember if anything actually happened.

I don't mind Lynch. Elephant Man was top drawer, and I'd happily watch Blue Velvet a couple more times.

I just prefer symbolism to be secondary to an actual plot.

Heh both would be in my top 5 favourite films. Although Inland Empire was insufferable.

Hero/House of flying Daggers - proves art design and cinematography are no substitute for a good script and acting.

Fantasia - dancing broomsticks aside, this is average, unimaginative animation. The likes of Fleischer and Disney himself were producing far more interesting work at the time.

I've bleated about this before. Had to sit through the 4 hour redux when I was in High School and it bored me to tears.

Visually stunning but it was as slow and lumbering as Heart of Darkness, which is also one of my most hated books of all time.

Agreed about Mulholland Drive.

AN though is the best movie I've ever seen.

Didn't like The Godfather as much either. Always felt compelled to add it top movie lists 'cos of the hype. It is a very good book adaptation, that's about it.

Godfather II is mint though. Loved Godfather III as well.

Think I'm gonna be pelted by e-stones.

They made a Godfather 3?

Not sure if it falls into this category but Road to Perdition was a bag of wank imo

They filmed parts of the movie right next door to my friends house. He lived right next to a cornfield. He met Tom Hanks while he was mowing his lawn and said he was a very nice guy

I see 'The Deer Hunter' has come up a couple of times. I couldn't agree more. That movie bored the piss out of me. I switched it off before they made it to Vietnam.

There's too much heresy in this thread to even pick out individual posts. Suffice to say that some of the suggestions in here are a disgrace.

They made a Godfather 3?

It's probably best if we all pretend they didn't.

I never found Spinal Tap particlary funny, or Blazing Saddles. They were decent enough, just not what I was expecting.

I had a good laugh at Blazing Saddles but I find Spinal Tap to be overrated. The only bit I managed a proper laugh at was when they lowered the mini stonehenge.

+1 for Spinal Tap. Loads of people, even those outside rock circles rave about it. Apart from the odd moment i thought it was pretty poor.

Of the more recent highly rated films (not sure they're classics, but...):

Casino Royale - James Bond plays poker for an hour, followed by an exciting action sequence where James Bond...sits in his car nearly choking on a drink, before getting better, just in time to allow him to...continue playing poker for another hour. Then suddenly loads of buildings collapse and for some not adequately explained reason one of the characters gets electricuted and wheeled away at the end. Seriously what was this? It was one of those times you watch a film purely on the recommendation of others then are forced to come to the conclusion that everyone except you is an idiot.

Avatar - For some reason it being in 3D seemed to make everyone overlook what a terrible film it was. I found the problem was that at the start of the trailers it was like "3D yeah, wooo. this is amazing!", then by the time the film started "3D, woo, yeah", then by 20 minutes into it "actually, this is a bit shit"...then it seemed to carry on for another 6 hours or so. Afterwards I had a headache due to being exposed to natural light after wearing darkened 3D glasses for hours.

Forest Gump - It wasn't that I didn't like it, just, I didn't really get what the point in any of it was...and I can't remember like the entire last half of the film because I always get bored and stop paying attention at around the same point.

Inception - This will probably be unpopular. It was ok, but, here's some cool things my dreams often include that don't appear in this film: sex, flying, pirates, big massive lava explosions, robot spiders, general absolute mental surrealness, etc.
Here's some things I never dream about that were in this film a lot: rooms with nothing happening in them, people walking about in suits, walking, people unecessarily explaining things, sitting around, entirely normal looking buildings, meetings, etc.
Also the spinning top bit at the end was the most predictable ending to any film ever.

Yeah, but you're German so that's no suprise! =)

But unfortunately a lot of my friends, who also happen to be German, like a lot of them.

Someone will probably track down my rl address and stone me to death, but I have to call Star Wars.
I mean in the context of the time they made the first movies it's their special effects and stuff are probably quite impressive, but imo the story is just so pathetic and cheesy, as well as some of the dialogues and the comical relieves.
I don't understand at all how grown men can watch that stuff over and over again almost to the point of worship.

Avatar is supposed to be a classic?

Oh ffs there's nothing evil about Forrest Gump!

question nothing and do what everyone tells you: - become rich and happy
think for yourself and stand up for what you believe in: - get continually abused and die of a horrible illness

Forrest Gump is a conservative wet dream. Horrible evil film.
Great to know you're a fellow Forrest Gump hater, Nilsson.
I wouldn't even have brought it up in this thread, because it's certainly not a classic by any stretch of the imagination. It's just a box-office success, as a film it's pure dross.

Everything about Forrest Gump is, if not outright evil, then at least tasteless and horrible. It's patronising garbage.
Yes, I know my reaction is over the top, but I do detest that film.

I don't get the love for Skyfall. Oh, and American Beauty. I think Slumdog Millionaire is utter drivel too. Not sure if they're classics, but they're Oscar winners and Skyfall has been called the best Bond ever... huh?
