Zidane's deal was pretty much similar to what I said.

Juve probably needed the money , we don't really care about it . Out of all the DDG talk I have seen here, your idea that we should have sold him last summer is the worst according to me.

@English_AS
Manchester United offer €30 million and De Gea for Ramos - http://as.com/diarioas/2015/06/23/english/1435045364_143303.html …

United to offer €30m + De Gea for Ramos. Meeting held back in April. United would double his wages.

Ramos is a very good player but we get him for €30m and De Gea, once again, Madrid have outplayed us on the negotiation.

A straight swap would be a blinder. A deal like the one AS are floating is Garry Cook style dealing. When we signing Robinho...?

€30 + De Gea? I'd say De Gea is worth €30/€25 even in his final year. So €55/60m for a defender? Is this us getting bummed again if this pans out like AS informed?
I bloody hope not. If we get Ramos, we should be doing a straight swap. I still think we should leak a list to the press of all the unsettled players. We've probably tested the waters over a few players, so might as well be stir the pot.

I think you underestimate Ramos' importance. Without him the Madrid defense if a joke, not to mention that he is their leader on the field.

Its not about underestimating Ramos. I just value De Gea more. Without him, our defence is much more porous than the numbers suggest.

Juventus never needed the money. They just didn't want Real to rip them off. Also Zidane represented a shrewd piece of business for Juventus. 40m+ for a 29 year old is a shrewd deal indeed.

I dont blame United because a player wants to leave. That happens all the time. I blame United for not protecting themselves for such circumstances. If we end up losing ddg for 15m than someone is to blame and its certainly not the player.

In 25 years of following football I don't remember a worse time to be buying centre backs. The amount of quality in that position has declined so much that the best of what's left, while not a patch on the players of a previous generation, will cost buyers dearly. Luiz going for £50m last year was the most egregious example so far but I think it will be beaten pretty soon. Hummels, Otamendi and now Ramos have all been reported targets of ours and in each case the rumoured cost was comically high.

I wonder what a prime Nesta, Ferdinand or Cannavaro would go for if one could magically appear today.

A straight swap represents their value IMO. De gea is more valuable than Ramos right now but he's got only a year to go which should even things out. Spending 30 million and giving them de gea would be consistent with our dealings with Madrid though.

Ramos looks so cool. Not Pirlo cool but very cool.

Agree with all of this. Is there a centre back (under 30) playing today who would even be in contention for a top ten list of CBs over the last two, never mind three decades?

As much as he'd improve us, I think it's painfully obvious that he'll sign a new contract at Madrid. Schweinsteiger I feel there is more of a chance of us signing.

Hummels (26ish) plus Varane will deffo be that! Unfair really as most of those "top ten" would have played their best years in the age bracket you're discounting!

I don't think Hummels would be even close to that top ten! Varane has the potential, I agree.

But yeah, it's a bit arbitrary, but the thought is that those above 30 and still playing set the bar when they peaked, and will be judged accordingly. Plus, it was in the context of the pool of realistic CB purchases. But I do get your point.

I wouldn't have an issue with that offer. De Gea doesn't want to stay and at least we get one of their best players.

Could there be a possibility that united want to use Ramos to up the de gea money , as well as spooking Valencia into think we don't want otamendi anymore , therefore Valencia excepting less than otos buy out ?

Do we get Val Kilmer too?

I wouldn't want him as our CB.

Yes, yes, there was nothing wrong with your post, I was just stating that I disagree that Hummels would be in contention. Differing opinions are the life blood of discussion forums, don't you think? :)

My god the state of him. :wenger:
To be fair he did get a bit:

But he's lost some weight and looks a bit more Ramos again:

Not too sure why this was spoilered and any of the others above were not … was in the topical dialogue but I guess no-one will ever see it now it's been censored. Guess I'll get chastised for writing this too so double-whammy!
