Film The Redcafe Movie review thread

Sicario - 8/10
This one I liked, especially the first hour I thought was excellent. A bit weaker towards the end but still a really good movie.
Only problem I had with that movie was the few very slow scenes. It's why I didn't really enjoy Prisoners either which is from the same director. He needs to cut it out with the staring at eachothers faces for 3 minutes straight.

The Martian - 3/10
Thought this was complete trash actually. Had high expectations for it and watched it at the cinema stoned and man, just garbage. The humour was absolutely terrible, I mean at one point some guy was falling down and that shit was supposed to be funny? It felt like an Armageddon type movie but this isn't the 90s and the whole film was just, bleh. For the record I'd rather watch Armageddon again before this heap of crap and I've no idea why people like this film.

Because they weren't stoned when they watched it perhaps?

*** shit wuz spose be funny?

I really enjoyed The Martian despite all the naff jokes, the book was far worse for that!

Pawn Sacrifice

Bobby and Boris face off in a metaphor for the cold war. Good film but is too esoteric to be a box office hit. 7/10

Far from the Madding Crowd (2015 version)

Carey Mulligan is outstanding, the film less so as it eschews some of the key dialogue from the novel and abbreviates it too much so that it fits into 2 hours. Still enjoyable to watch. 7/10

Diamonds are Forever

Not good enough to be considered a golden oldie. Bond caper set mainly in Vegas and one of the last Connery appearances. Charles Grey is memorable as Blofeld, Jill St John is one of the more underwhelming Bond girls. 5/10

Yeah well the entire cinema laughed at all the crap jokes, and the one-liners... Nah thought it was crap but I might give it another go sober. Pretty sure I'll still hate it though.

Well as I said above, the entire cinema laughed at all the extremely unfunny jokes, so I don't know but it felt like it.

The ABCs of Death
Tried to watch this before but couldn't finish it. A really hit and miss (but mostly miss) anthology. There were a few good ones (D,L,Q and X) but the rest ver average to utter shit. F, G, H, M and Z were complete trash.

I read that all the directors were given $5000 dollars for their films and I want to know what TI West did with the money because his segment (M) was something that can easily have been done on $5 not $5000.

Q for me definitely stands out as the best of the lot. A smart idea and executed right. It was obvious that the director (Adam Wingard) is the best of the lot and you can see why he has gone on to do much bigger things.

Overall it gets 4/10
Wow, I haven't seen anything like that before! Some absolute shit and some brilliant ones mixed together. I enjoyed it.

There were funny moments but I don't remember any laugh out loud moments, it isn't that sort of film.

And the science was rather good unlike things like Armageddon.

I really enjoyed Sicario and found it tense and engaging throughout. Loved the simplicity of the film, it never oversells story or character and is largely driven by cinematic technique that crafts the films tight dramatic energy. A political thriller with a small 'p', it's free from the trite political observations and moralising that clutter many a border thriller. This bloke is proving to be a fine genre director and if this was a South Korean film everyone would be wanking themselves silly.

Well the cinema people thought it was anyway.

Yeah I guess, but the ending was similar. Next time some astronaut is in trouble I'm gonna grab my American flag (I'll have to buy one of those), and walk out on the street with a tear in my eye in look up to the sky.

Can't agree with you, I think it's very hit and miss. I see what you mean about the 'tight dramatic energy', but the film only functions on this basis, and relies way too much on it. The characters aren't particularly engaging (except for Del Toro), and it ends up being a bit of a mess. The final act is completely botched, as well.

There's some very good stuff in there and Villeneuve definitely has the ability to put together some incredibly tense scenes, but in this film in any case he doesn't quite pull it all together and too much of it is just filler.

The Duke of Burgundy - An 'erotic, stylish and atmospheric' drama that wasn't very erotic, stylish or atmospheric at all, nor good.
I didn't like Berberian Sound Studio so haven't got around to this one.

Inarittu is a wanker but a couple of his films (Birdman, Amores Perros) have had stuff to like about them. Usually be parts he couldn't ruin.

Creed
Was very excited to see this but overall I didn't think it was great. I normally rate Michael B. Jordan but I didn't like him in this... a lot of his dialogue seemed forced, like a white person writing "black" dialogue. Sly though was amazing in it and nearly had me in tears at one point. I liked how the fight scenes were filmed all in one take but the story was a bit too unrealistic even for a Rocky film. The main problem was that Rocky films are all about a underdog story about a man that had to fight to survive and that feeling was totally missed on this. The final training montage was also too cheesy. It was ok but nothing special 6.5/10

Edit: Not a spoiler but:

Sly that bastard just had to get Everton some screen time

I wouldn't recommend it to a non-Rocky lover. But yeah because I thoroughly love the Rocky films, I thought it was alright. Nowhere near up to their level, but still a decent watch. Close to tears a few times from sheer nostalgia of seeing Balboa, and the occasional shot of Apollo. Going to watch Rocky 1 and 2 now actually.

All The President's Men
As the quality of journalism is a hot topic at the moment, I thought it was time to fill this gap in my movie experiences.
For a movie just under 2 hrs 15min about this specific subject matter, it raced by.
Redford and Hoffman are supported by a stellar cast, and all the acting is excellent.
I could happily have watched another hour or two of the same.

Nice to put right my oversight finally.
Highly recommended 9/10.

Finally getting around to watching Star Wars again. Is it me or is George Lucas a terrible director and horrible at casting. Seriously, the guy playing Anakin in II and III ...wtf.

Although he was much better in things like My Life As A House - nowhere near good enough to carry such a film series mind. And yes, Lucas isn't a very good director. He has only dorected 2 decent filsm and the last of thise was the original Star Wars in 1977. A good ideas man and debatably writer.

Although the end was a bit of a let down due to it being a true film. Still one of my favorites.

Really enjoyed it but you need to give it your full attention, because there is not much filler in there.
The ending is a little flat but it could only really have been triumphalism if they run it with the protagonists.
I think they could have added an hour and ratcheted up the paranoia, but I suspect that they were given a limit.
Oh, for a director's cut!

Turbo Kid
In a post-apocalyptic wasteland, a kid dons the persona of his comic hero to save his girl against an all conquering dictator. Based off of the short film 'T is for Turbo', this low-budget film initially feels like a rich students attempt at Mad Max but in the end it definitely stands on it's own merits. The characters are familiar but awesome, the gore level is off the roof and the story is surprisingly touching. The action and comedic moments were bang on and I really enjoyed the film from start to finish 8/10

THX 1138 is a cracking film.

Creed

feckin brilliant. Ticked all the boxes for me. Well acted, engaging characters and heart pumping fight scenes. Exactly what you want in a Rocky movie. Not even ashamed to admit I teared up on a few occasions. Bonus points for having the climax at Goodison Park.

Yeah I'm lookin' forward to this.

School of Rock

Seen this again today, what a brilliant, funny film.

8-9/10

The Hateful Eight. I really enjoyed it. There was some great dialogue, some comic moments, and plenty of gore.

8/10

Good to hear man. A few bad reviews had put me off watching this. Will give it a watch then.

Now that's a proper review. I teared up as well. Great fecking movie.

The Revenant

A few great scenes, but ultimately boring. 2.5 hours, and 1 hour of it is Di Caprio crawling. 5/10
