Our goal was a deflection. Willians is a cross which turned in to a goal which is a lot more of a fluke. (As well as being pretty amusing to deny Liverpool the win and it will remind Liverpool fans of the Slippy G game).

I don't know there's just something about the headline that annoys me. Similar goals are scored across the country every weekend and they aren't reported as flukes. Flukes to me are goalkeepers scoring from kick outs or something like Tevezs back heel in the Carling Cup semi a few years ago.

extremely flukey (shot not going in, deflected),

not ordinary little bit flukey (Willians?) called wayward in the press,

nor wickedly dastardly flukey (ie, a double deflection from a shot off target)

You have six teams going for one position, four of which spend big. This aint like France or Germany. If this were France or Germany and we werent top, I would be pissed off. Not in the current league, with the level of competition we are up against.

I said it before. If Mourinho wins either the CL or the PL in his time, it will be a success, given how hard it is now to win either.

Yes today was bad, but we have played much better in most games at home.

I don't know why we keep crowding the left side so much.
Martial, Young, Mata and Rashford are all bunched up on the left, while Valencia and sometimes Pogba are the only ones to the right.
If Rashford would hold the right wing it would stretch out their defenders more and actually give Martial more room to dribble on the left, and Lukaku more room in the center.

I guess it's because the three behind Lukaku keep rotating spots to confuse the defenders, but it seems to create just as much chaos for our own team.
Maybe if they only rotated every 20 minutes instead of every 2.

Matic and Rom, we agree on.
Valencia? The rest will do nothing for his crossing but will give a chance from him to rest his knee, which I assume is contributing to his relatively poor movement.

Martial and Rashford should be coming into games and at least showing glimpses.
They should be running past players at ease, with only a final ball or vital decision making needing improvement.

They both look way off even the first, let alone the second or third.

I agree with that. Neither has made the case for the confirmed place in the team with their performances but chopping and changing every week is not good for any players confidence or form.
I don't think Jose knows his best team or his attacking formation and that is a problem.

Eh? Our goal was totally flukey - the goal itself was a deflection, Lukaku fouled someone at the near post, and it probably shouldn't have even been a corner which lead to the goal.

Contrast that to an 85 minute equaliser against Liverpool at Anfield.

How is a goal more or less flukey depending on where and when it's scored?

usual stuff.... we are too predictable in attack

there's far too much pressure on Rashford/Martial to produce every week at their age

Pogba stood out in terms of quality

Ashley Young looked like the one player who could beat a man

we look like a team who might be brilliant next season with 4 good signings

I never said it was. Are you not reading the post I was quoting? He was complaining about the Sky reports being negative to us but being favourable for the Willian goal -- I explained why.

Crucial 3 points that has kept us in the title race. We need games like this.

What is the solution with our play making quality? Haven't seen many creations and it's a bit frustrating, number 10 position is such a real weak link now, Mkhitaryan, Mata, and Lingard are all average and weak, lose the ball pretty easy, and the winger situation is also a problem, we have some serious issues and to still manage a win is also good, but we need much much much better performances the next 3 games, players must play with their heart and soul, the Lukaku run when he came back to defend the ball is something we need to match every game, that is the spirit, sometimes unfortunately players or some of them look like surrending too easy, don't know if it's a mentality of the players or it's tactics and upon Jose?

European hangover avoided.

So far we are the only team that played in Europe this week who got the 3 points on offer.

Its a small win but 'twill do me!

We sign four players and then by this time next year you will be saying we need four more signings. We cant keep signing players every summer.

Spot on.

  • Matic does need a rest- he has been holding up this team all season.
  • Lukaku does need a rest.....or more accurately to be dropped
  • Rashford has hardly played a full game all year and has been alternating regularly with Martial. It is inconsistency and not fatigue that has been the issue.
  • Valencia- is it likely that rest will improve his crossing?
Rashford took a knock earlier in the season and it looks like it has taken its toll. He often gives up chasing through balls, it is as though he is afraid to pull something. It would be better for the long term to move Young forward to the wing and bring on Damian, Shaw or Blind at left back. Let Rashford fully recover for the Xmas period.

We are a totally different team when Matic is fresh, but he has looked tired recently, maybe Herrera and Fellani against Watford and allow Pogba to move further forward. Lukaku just needs to get some service, he put in a great shift today, but he forgot his shooting boots.

Valencia gets very little support when Mata plays on the right. He always has loads of space, but no support and like you say his crossing could be better. He will need support against this young winger that Watford has, maybe better to have Damian who is better defensively.

I agree but we still do

the difference is that City and to a degree Chelsea have raised the bar again, our 10s, our full backs and our wide attackers aren't of the required standard

Purely subjective as this is based on individual observations. Martial's output has been better than last season, and it is only November. Certain aspects of his game are not yet well-developed, but he's young and at the moment, is playing as we expect him to. We shouldn't be putting pressure on him to be the game-changer yet, that should come in a couple of seasons.
If Martial is (by your own assertion) one of only two genuine talents we have, he should at the very least be a regular starter. You still can't even say that much for him this season.
Firstly, I have watched a bit of Liverpool this season and they are not even playing a fast, high intensity system this season. For some reason, Klopp has put the brakes on his harem-scarem pressing.

Secondly, if a winger is fast and scores goals, he is suited to any system - counter-attacking, defensive or high-intensity pressing. A winger is not some specialist position like midfield, where you have a ball-winner (more suited to a defensive system like Conte's) or a deep-lying playmaker (better suited to ours). The only system which might require something more from a winger besides pace and goals is possession based system, where an obsessive coach like LvG or Guardiola might not want their players giving the ball away.

Simply put, he's a winger who is fast and scores goals. Any manager would happily take him or Mane, it has nothing to do with any system.

Btw, Mourinho makes mistakes, but there's no doubt he would have Salah or De Bruyne now. His weakness is a liking for players who follow instructions to a tee. The likes of Fellaini, Willian and Lingard do that, which explains it more than his preference for a type of winger.
Salah is scoring goals but he misses plenty of chances also. We don't create half as many chances as they do so he'd likely be another frustrating player if he were in our team.

I don't share your views on him being able to play as part of any system, either. He certainly isn't in the same bracket of player as someone like de Bruyne.

What stage in the season do you want to, you know, actually be entertained? Or is that not important to you? I see a lot of points first and thats the main thing, but dirge like today isn't why any of us watch this sport.

At home to Brighton, I am looking for us to really stamp our authority, like City would, like even Arsenal would. Yes I want us to win, but I'd expect better than today.

Nah, a win is a win.
A good loss is always disappointing and up for debate why it happened.
Take the win and leave the rest for the other teams as Cantona would have expressed it!!

I really like Lindelof tackle to koucartsomething.
after we score the goal, the game became boring but I'm very happy we can get 3 points. Brighton defence really tough and solid, especially their GK.
now, I can enjoy watching liv vs chelsea.. happy weekend!

Lindelöf
And our game doesn't get boring, just...you know different in a good way!!

A win is a win. Ugly but we wouldn't have won that last year and Hughton has got Brighton well organised.

Definitely wrong there mate. If Newcastle had world class attackers they would have been 2-0 up at half time.
Wow.
Talk about hating our own team. If Newcastle had scored 2 score would have been 2-2 at HT.
Unless of course you want to add "If Newcastle had awesome defenders" condition as well

Start martial , rashford & lukaku together caf said
We will play free flowing football caf said
It will be exciting caf said

1 shot in first half & looked clueless all day

Zlatan , the one whom caf deemed as making our play slow actually creating more chances.

3 rivals lost points today and we won! Moan all you want! I'm more than satisfied!

Well City gonna win the league so whether we stop watching or supporting the team, it's unbelievable after every game some have to compare us to City or Pep to Jose. Yes we need to be better and more consistent.

Not even half way through the season mate just stay in touch until early January the see how we stand
An injury to de bruyne or Silvia changes city entirely IMO
The FA doesn't give a feck about English teams in the CL so they dont have a winter break. That means we have to play a ridiculous amount of games during the winter.

Just get rid of the feckig carling cup

Every other country has midweek games but they have time to schedule them because there isn't a third cup comp

Fantastic result regardless of style of play. You cant play pretty all the time, abd with Morinhou as the coach, you orobably wont play pretty most of the time. And I'm fine with that. I don't think Morinhou is here to build a dynasty, abd he won't be our next Fergi regardless of results or style of play. Mou is a contractor for trophies, he'll bring back relevance to United, hopefully a title and a few good runs deep i to the CL knockouts and then he will go on to his next challenge. He will leave us better than when he came, a better base and a better name that players will want to come and play for.

We cant deny the fact that the prestige of play for Man Utd has gone down a bit with the years. A lot of players would prefer City, or Chelsea or even Atletico and Dortmund(not even speaking abour Real, Barca or Bayern). That must change and I'm sure that will by the time Mou is done with us.

Great result, onto the next win. Need to scrap wins againts Watford and Arsene FC and hope city will lose some points before the OT game.

Yeah today was awful. I was there and am half way through my journey home as i write this. But haven't we got a significantly better goal difference than anyone other than city? And they're about to break the record for the best start to a season ever so they're better than any ferguson aide by this point in the season as well.

We're not perfect but we're 2nd, about as good as we can hope for this year. We've also scored 4 goals in a game 8 times this season. We're not going to be great every game, no team is. I'd like to know how many fergie teams had this goal difference at this stage in the season.

Great point mate
I completely agree with you
We just have to stay in there until January and then go from there
We desperately need either someone else in midfield to release pogba or a quality 10 and it would transform us.

Not the best of performances but a win is a win and that’s all that matters. This is the sort of game we would have drawn last season. We needed the 3 points to stay close to City.

Would rather have played ugly and won than playing sexy football and end up drawing or losing.

Bad performance

Positives
1. Young's consistency. He has shown it again ! Hard to see Shaw break into starting XI
2. Lindelof's stability and confidence

Agreed. Everyone here seems to think that at home we should just turn up and play amazing but give credit to the opposition.
