Russian invasion of Ukraine | Fewer tweets, more discussion

How are they going to get all that over and how will the Ukrainians distribute all that?
They’ve had constant C-17s flying shit into Poland since the war started. It would take mere days to transport all this stuff once it is in one place. Those planes are gigantic.

Obviously but there's less than zero interest for them to attack Belarus. On top of being stupid from a military standpoing, it would totally shatter their "we just defend our land, they're the attackers" (legitimate) propaganda.
For sure it is an additional political consideration to attack the territory of the country that isn't the main aggressor. Militarily, if there are critical supply depots or connections in Belarus from which the Russian forces north of Kyiv are getting supplied from, then those would also be targets of value. That said, Ukraine has shown limited ability and/or willingness to conduct such strikes on the supply lines even within Russia, so I agree it would be unlikely that they would be striking them in Belarus. Just not impossible.

Keep in mind that this is all small handheld stuff. You don't need any big trucks or other special devices, you can transport that with basically everything.

Russians won't track them coming from Poland and attack these convoys?
My point is why make these announcements? It's so redundant at that point with so many countries promising ant tank weapons etc.
Just ship them out quietly or western Ukraine becomes a huge target.

What has provoked these comments from Putin? Is just about the odd ballerina that has defected, or the one or two oligarchs living in the West who have criticised the war? Or is there something more going on that we don't yet know about?

They would like to try to anyways. But the point is, you don't need to drive in a big convoy to distribute this weapons and the Russians won't be able to attack every truck crossing the border and driving somewhere through Ukraine. So it's quite safe to transport those through their own country. As long as they are driving through their own land they don't have any need to form convoys.

And you can be sure Russian intelligence would get to know about those deliveries anyway. While we have seen an exceptional case of filtering out unwanted negative information while moving reports through the ranks and therefore an epic failure to assess the strategic situation, that doesn't mean that such tactical information would go unnoticed. So at this point publicly announcing it is essentially just PR and propaganda, a show of support for the Ukrainian people.

Tough to stop a flood.

Sonic boom makes much more sense, unless I've missed images/videos of actual explosions?

Nothing almost one hour after the event, I think it's pretty safe to assume nothing exploded in Belarus.

Fareed Zakaria just said according to his sources, the Russians have lowered their demands for a ceasefire, which suggests they're feeling the pressure.

#Putin speaks of a special action in #Ukraine that is not aimed at civilians. However, a drone filmed a few kilometers west of Kyiv how a civilian was shot dead by apparently Russian soldiers. #ZDFfrontal exclusive, more about the war 9:15 p.m. @ZDF

Watch them break off peace talks and say they won't restart till biden apologises

At this stage I'd imagine the Russians are becoming increasingly eager for peace talks. In another 3 weeks, at the current rate of attrition, around half of their total invasion force will be out of action. If they try taking major cities, it'll be way more than half.

Russia will pull in other countries on its side, I have no doubt that Putin will go further yet.

@AFP: Biden used the phrase "war criminal" to describe Putin for the first time today, and then deepened his attack, tweeting that Putin was "inflicting appalling devastation and horror on Ukraine -- bombing apartment buildings and maternity wards"

Much of this stuff will also be coming in car boots and the like. You can stack a fair few boxed weapons inside with the back seat folded flat. Impossible to track it all. Impossible to stop.

Very good. Hopefully the same thing happens to the guys who did this…

A tweet from Christo Grozev:

The last hospital in Mariupol, by the Associated Press. All others were bombed out by Russia. People doctors can't save are lined up in the basement, including infants. It's the most heart wrenching footage of this war.

There is a two minute video showing how the dead and the dying are being laid out in the building's basement. I am not even sure they have the morphine to ease their passing.

Sure, they might do that. But they might also do that because of arms transports, transit points of foreign volunteers, and even sanctions (which they've already ridiculously claimed is a declaration of war). My point is just that the act of shooting down Nato planes outside of Nato territory (and the ocean) doesn't concern Article 5, no more than any of those other things. You might claim that's a literal reading, but there is no other way to read the article.

That doesn't mean a no fly zone is a good idea, of course. Whether or not Russians shooting down American pilots is going to start WW3, Americans shooting down Russian pilots probably is.
Yes, I agree with all that, sorry if I didn't express it well.

Also, I think literal is the way these texts should be read, cause it would be very undesirable for a multination military agreement to be ambiguous. That won't stop some people from trying creative interpretations, but that can't have been the intention of the language. So my use of 'literal' wasn't meant negatively.

@spectatorindex: BREAKING: Panama's government says three Panama-flagged ships have been hit by Russian missiles in the Black Sea since the start of the war, with one of them sunk.

Except officials are claiming it was military exercises, which means explosions. All a bit strange.

This asshole woulda spoken out against aid to Britain in 1940.

That asshole would have been a devout admirer of Hitler.

Neo-fascists band together, as ever. The alt-right Trumpian cultists hate democracy in the USA as much as they applaud Putin for trying to crush democracy in Ukraine.

‘Our enemies & our frenemies’
Indeed.
God damn pacifists
Unsurprisingly, she only supports war when it’s against her own government

“In an interview with gun activist Chris Dorr on October 27, 2020, a week before election day, Greene told viewers: "the only way you get your freedoms back is it's earned with the price of blood."
Feck that cnut. But not literally.
Definitely not literally [shudders]

Quite right. She’d absolutely goose step into dictatorship to save democracy from the Democrats.

Seems to be something going on in Belarus, apparently Lavrov's plane just turned around mid flight to China to go back west.
